A Possible Roadmap After Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s Release: From Hope to National Reconciliation

The recent reports that Daw Aung San Suu Kyi was allowed to communicate with her son have rekindled hope among many Myanmar people who have long worried about her well-being. For those who admire and support her, seeing indications that she remains in relatively good health at over 80 years of age provides both emotional relief and renewed optimism.

More importantly, these developments have inevitably prompted speculation about a possible political transition.

Many observers recall the political opening of 2010-2011, when negotiations between Myanmar and Western governments contributed to the easing of sanctions and eventually led to Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s release and participation in national politics. Today, some wonder whether Myanmar may once again be approaching a similar turning point.

Recent diplomatic contacts involving the United States, China, ASEAN states, and Myanmar have fueled such speculation. While no outcome is guaranteed, there appears to be increasing international interest in reducing tensions and stabilizing Myanmar. The issue of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s continued detention remains one of the most significant obstacles affecting Myanmar’s international standing.

Why Her Release May Become Increasingly Likely

Several practical and political considerations may encourage a reassessment of her situation.

First, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s advanced age creates humanitarian concerns and places additional responsibilities upon the authorities responsible for her detention.

Second, her continued imprisonment remains a major source of international criticism, including from ASEAN member states, Western governments, and human rights organizations.

Third, any future effort to improve Myanmar’s international relationships, attract investment, reduce economic isolation, or facilitate peace negotiations would likely benefit from a more conciliatory political environment.

For these reasons, many observers believe that her eventual release has become more likely than at any time since 2021.

What Could Daw Aung San Suu Kyi Do After Release?

If she were released, several possible paths might be open to her.

1. Retirement from Active Politics

After more than three decades of political struggle, imprisonment, and public service, she may decide to step away from frontline politics and devote her remaining years to family, literature, education, humanitarian work, and spiritual reflection.

Such a decision would be understandable and would likely be respected by many Myanmar people.

2. Mentoring a New Generation

Another possibility would be to help rebuild democratic political institutions and nurture younger political leaders.

Rather than re-entering direct political competition, she could act as an elder stateswoman, offering guidance and promoting dialogue among competing political actors.

This may represent the most realistic and constructive option.

3. Active Political Engagement

A less likely possibility would involve resuming a direct leadership role in opposition politics, either within Myanmar or abroad.

Given her age, health considerations, and changing political realities, this appears less probable.

The Impact on Myanmar’s Political Landscape

Her release would inevitably affect Myanmar’s political dynamics.

It would require political actors associated with the National League for Democracy (NLD), the National Unity Government (NUG), Ethnic Revolutionary Organizations (EROs), civil society organizations, and the military authorities to reconsider their future strategies.

Most importantly, her release could create an opportunity to shift attention from military confrontation toward political negotiation.

Myanmar’s people are exhausted after years of war, displacement, economic decline, inflation, and social fragmentation.

Millions of citizens inside and outside the country are searching for a realistic path toward peace.

A credible peace process, if accompanied by the release of political prisoners, could generate significant public support.

Connecting the Release to a Comprehensive Peace Process

In my view, the release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi should not be regarded as an end in itself.

Rather, it should become part of a broader Myanmar Peace and National Reconciliation Process.

This was the central idea behind the proposal I personally submitted to the Malaysian Foreign Minister before the ASEAN Summit and related ASEAN-US-China engagements.

The underlying principle is simple:

No side can completely defeat all other sides militarily. Therefore, a negotiated political settlement is ultimately unavoidable.

The release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi could serve as a confidence-building measure that helps initiate such negotiations.

The Way Forward After Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s Release

A realistic post-release roadmap could include:

1. Nationwide Ceasefire

An immediate and verifiable ceasefire between all parties.

2. Release of Political Prisoners

Progressive release of political detainees and prisoners held by all sides wherever feasible.

3. Humanitarian Access

Unrestricted humanitarian assistance to conflict-affected communities.

4. Inclusive National Dialogue

Participation by:

  • State Administration Council (SAC)
  • NLD representatives
  • NUG representatives
  • Ethnic Revolutionary Organizations (EROs)
  • Religious leaders
  • Civil society organizations
  • Women’s and youth representatives

5. Transitional Administration

A broad-based transitional mechanism to prepare for future democratic governance.

6. Truth, Healing and Reconciliation

Myanmar could learn from South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), which was established after apartheid to uncover human rights violations, promote national healing, and support reconciliation. The TRC operated through committees on amnesty, reparations, rehabilitation, and human rights violations. [justice.gov.za]

A Myanmar reconciliation mechanism should similarly focus on:

  • Truth-telling
  • Acknowledgement of suffering
  • Reparations for victims
  • Institutional reform
  • National healing

However, unlike South Africa, Myanmar may need additional mechanisms tailored to its multi-ethnic and multi-religious realities.

Beyond Reconciliation: Compensation and Reform

Reconciliation alone is insufficient.

A sustainable peace process should also consider:

Victim Compensation

Compensation should be considered for:

  • Families of the deceased
  • Injured civilians
  • Former political prisoners
  • Torture survivors
  • Internally displaced persons
  • Those who lost homes and property

Potential funding sources may include:

  • Future Myanmar governments
  • Military-owned enterprises as part of negotiated settlements
  • International reconstruction funds
  • International development partners

Security Sector Reform

Long-term stability requires that the armed forces return to a professional national defense role.

Future security institutions could gradually incorporate qualified personnel from:

  • Tatmadaw
  • Ethnic Revolutionary Organizations
  • People’s Defense Forces
  • Other security entities

subject to agreed professional standards and vetting procedures.

Safe Exit Arrangements

International peace negotiations often include security guarantees or negotiated retirement arrangements for former leaders.

Any discussion regarding immunity or resettlement would require agreement among stakeholders and compliance with applicable international law.

Such matters remain highly sensitive and should be addressed through negotiations rather than imposed by any one side.

Future Governance Framework

Myanmar’s future political system should be based upon:

A Genuine Federal Democratic Union

Ensuring meaningful autonomy and participation for ethnic states and regions.

Rule of Law

Independent courts, accountable institutions, and protection of fundamental rights.

Equality of Citizenship

Full protection of all ethnic and religious communities.

Non-Alignment

Maintaining balanced relationships with major powers while safeguarding Myanmar’s sovereignty and national interests.

Economic Reintegration

Analysts widely argue that political stabilization, rule-of-law reforms, and improved international relations are important prerequisites for restoring foreign investment, trade, and economic recovery. This is an analytical assessment rather than an established fact.

If Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is eventually released, the event should be viewed not merely as the release of a political leader, but as a potential opening for a broader national peace process. Myanmar’s future depends not on the victory of one side over another, but on the willingness of all stakeholders to move from armed confrontation toward political compromise. The ASEAN peace initiative, supported by regional and global stakeholders, may provide one of the few realistic pathways toward a peaceful, federal, democratic, and inclusive Union of Myanmar.

Today, I was finally able to speak with my mother, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, after more than five years. Hearing her voice again means more than words can express.

I am deeply grateful to everyone who has stood by my mother and me. I believe your voices helped make this moment possible. Please keep speaking up until she is free.

But my mother is 81 and remains unjustly detained.

One conversation is not regular family access. Family access is not freedom.

My mother must never be used as a hostage or bargaining chip for diplomatic recognition, sanctions relief or political advantage.

I request the UK government and all governments engaging with the military authorities to ensure that humanitarian rights are not exchanged for legitimacy.

My mother and all political prisoners must be released immediately and unconditionally. Freedom is not negotiable.
