The Fascist Myth of “Unity”

When fascist dictators want to control the public, they preach slogans like “We must be united,” “Do not divide,” “A stray ox becomes prey to the tiger,” or “Success springs from collective unity.” They even compose songs dedicated to unity as propaganda for control.

Every dictator in history uses this myth of unity. Hitler used it to control all of Germany, unifying the public under ultra-nationalism and militarism to lead them into a world war.

This myth of mandatory unity denies people their ethnic, religious, and ideological diversity. It attempts to force everyone into a single doctrine: One Blood, One Voice, One Command, One Race.

The people of Myanmar have been brainwashed with this unity rhetoric through the military dictatorship’s education system for two or three generations. Even within the revolutionary movement, this fascist mindset persists. People often fail to realize how deeply rooted fascist ideology has become within themselves.

Fascists historically used the symbol of a bundle of sticks (fasces). This bundle mindset rejects diversity, bringing racism, hatred, anger, and egocentrism into society.

For human society to thrive, forced unity is not required. The natural world exists through diverse species and flora. Differences in ethnicity, language, political ideology, philosophy, and geography will always exist. A peaceful society is only achieved when we embrace an ideology that allows these differences to coexist in justice and freedom.

If we cannot eliminate this bundle-of-sticks mindset of forced unity, we will simply replace one fascist group with another.

We do not need forced unity.

We need diverse alliances.

We need to build equal rights and justice across different ethnic groups.

Extended Commentary: Reconceptualizing Unity and Diversity

The core critique presented in JMP’s Post highlights a vital political distinction: the difference between authoritarian uniformity and pluralistic solidarity.

  • Forced Assimilation vs. Diversity: Dictatorial regimes often weaponize “unity” as a synonym for forced assimilation and strict conformity. In classical political theory, the symbol of the fasces (a bundle of rods tied together) represented strength through absolute cohesion, leaving no room for individual or minority identities.
  • Beyond Mutual Tolerance: Merely enduring differences (“tolerance”) is insufficient for durable peace. True peaceful coexistence requires mutual respect, mutual acceptance, and “Unity in Diversity.”
  • Pluralistic Alliances: Instead of demanding a single identity (One Blood, One Voice, One Command), a democratic society thrives on decentralization and coalitions among diverse ethnic, cultural, and political groups based on shared principles of equal rights, justice, and self-determination.
