In Rohingya politics, there is a phrase we constantly repeat: “We need unity.”
But the real question is: How do we unite?
Does it mean dissolving every existing group to merge into a single organization? Must everyone follow a single supreme leader?
No—absolutely not.
Around the world, displaced and oppressed ethnic groups who lost their political self-determination have attempted to solve this challenge in various ways. The political representation model built by the Tibetan diaspora offers valuable lessons for the Rohingya.
Following the events of 1959, Tibetans established a community in exile. Even without the ability to govern their homeland, they built an external representation system to ensure their political voice was never silenced. In 1960, they began electing representatives—a framework that gradually matured into today’s Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile.
Crucially, leadership was not claimed by individuals simply declaring themselves representatives. Instead, representatives gained their mandate through popular elections. Today, the parliament represents traditional regional provinces, religious traditions, and diaspora communities across Europe, North America, and elsewhere. In the 2026 exile elections, voters participated across 27 countries. The lesson is clear: True representation requires direct public participation.
While diverse opinions exist within the Tibetan community, they succeeded in constructing a formal institutional framework defining who represents the people, how leaders are chosen, and to whom they are accountable. They successfully shifted from personality-driven politics to institution-based governance.
Another case is the Kurdish political movement. Kurdish politics is far from monolithic—it spans multiple parties, ideology differences, tactics, and regional dynamics across Kurdistan. Yet, they established coalition mechanisms like the Kurdistan National Congress (KNK) to collaborate on common interests. The KNK brings together political parties and civil society groups from different regions of Kurdistan and the diaspora to advocate for collective self-determination and international representation. The takeaway here is that complete ideological uniformity isn’t necessary; what matters is an overarching system capable of uniting factions around shared goals.
What does this mean for the Rohingya?
The Rohingya community already possesses diverse strengths: political organizations, human rights groups, diaspora leaders, grassroots activists in refugee camps, youth, women, intellectuals, and communities enduring severe hardship inside Rakhine State. The issue is not a lack of capacity, but the absence of a unified framework to represent these collective forces.
- From the Tibetans, we learn: The necessity of a democratic mandate and formal representation.
- From the Kurds, we learn: The strength of strategic coalitions that bridge diverse organizations.
While the Rohingya experience is unique—with its own distinct history, political landscape, and challenges—we can draw meaningful insights from these precedents. Rohingya politics does not need a contest over who is the “top leader.” It needs an institutional system that genuinely reflects the people’s will.
Representation shouldn’t be measured by Facebook popularity or international conference attendances. It must be evaluated by key questions:
- Do the people have the power to elect their representatives?
- Are leaders held accountable to the public?
- Is decision-making transparent?
- Are women and youth actively included?
- Are both domestic and diaspora voices heard?
We stand at a critical juncture in history. The world is aware of the Rohingya crisis, but international awareness alone is insufficient. We must develop into a cohesive political force capable of shaping our own future.
Achieving this does not require dismantling existing groups, purging leaders, or erasing differences. Instead, it requires a structured system designed to manage pluralism. We do not need a single party or uniform thinking. We need a shared platform committed to the collective interest of our people.
For the Rohingya, a trustworthy, accountable political system is far more vital than simply finding another single leader.
Contextual References & Similar Organizations
To build on the comparison raised in the post, several historical and active diaspora movements offer additional paradigms for non-state representation and democratic coalitions:
- Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) & Palestinian National Council (PNC): Established to act as the sole legitimate representative of the Palestinian people across various factions and global diaspora communities.
- National Coalition of Syrian Revolution and Opposition Forces: Formed as a coalition body to bring together diverse political factions, local councils, and civil society groups representing Syrians abroad and in opposition territories.
- World Uyghur Congress (WUC): An international umbrella organization of Uyghur groups that uses democratic elections among diaspora delegates to choose its leadership and coordinate global advocacy efforts.
- National Unity Government (NUG) / National Unity Consultative Council (NUCC) of Myanmar: Within Myanmar’s broader pro-democracy movement, these bodies aim to bring together ethnic armed organizations, civil society, political parties, and strike committees under a shared federal-democratic framework.
