Dhamma Destroyed by Monks

Successive military regimes simplified the concept of “Rakkhita” as protecting one’s race, language, and religion, using it to fuel extreme nationalism. By around 2012, this reached a severe level. Scholars and researchers have raised serious questions about the ideological fallacies and real-world contradictions behind the rhetoric pushed by groups like 969 or Ma Ba Tha.

1. Invalid Definition of “Protecting Race and Religion” Religion is not exclusive to a single ethnic group; people of diverse ethnicities practice it. Within Buddhism, there are Shan monks, Karen monks, white monks, and Indian monks. Framing “protecting race and religion” around a single ethnicity makes no logical sense. The question arises: which race are you protecting? All Buddhists, or only the Bamar? If it is strictly for the Bamar, then leave religion out of it. Buddhism is neither owned by nor originated from the Bamar. In an era of global intellectual progress, clinging to religious extremism in state-building severely hampers the creation of a positive, progressive, and harmonious society.

2. Historical Re-examination and the Concept of “Sakyan” Descent In Myanmar history, certain royal dynasties claimed to be descendants of the “Sakyan” lineage (the noble clan of the Buddha) as a propaganda tool to build pride and motivation. Every ancient civilization used similar narratives—no group taught its descendants that they originated from inferior lineage. Using drama for morale is understandable, but asserting superiority over others becomes overconfident. This outdated Sakyan myth holds little weight in the 21st century, as people understand the intrinsic worth of every human being and ethnic group.

This Sakyan myth gained traction after the compilation of the Glass Palace Chronicle in the 18th century; earlier 16th-century historical texts do not feature this explicit ancestral framing. In reality, the Bamar people are not Sakyans. Historical and linguistic evidence shows that the Bamar belong to the Tibeto-Burman stock (Mongoloid stock) who migrated southward from Central Asia and the Tibetan Plateau. Saying Bamar origins are closer to East Asia/China is far more accurate.

“Sakya” refers to a specific clan/dynasty in northern ancient India (near the modern Nepal border)—it is a lineage name, not a religious title. The Buddha was born into this clan. Historically, the Buddha preached within a radius of a few hundred miles across northern India and southern Nepal (Lumbini, Rajgir, Sarnath, Gaya, Varanasi, the Ganges, Nalanda, Uruvela, and Kushinagar). He did not travel as far west as Taxila (in modern Pakistan), and there is no historical evidence that he ever visited Myanmar. Claiming Sakyan lineage to forcibly link oneself to the Buddha is inaccurate; historically speaking, the Sakyans were people of the Indian subcontinent.

3. Vinaya Code and the Decline of Critical Thinking The core essence of Theravada Buddhism lies in critical inquiry, discernment, and peace. However, recent movements have prioritized commentaries (Atthakathā) and personality cults over the original teachings of the Buddha. Consequently, the compassionate spirit of Buddhism is lost, replaced by hatred, racial tensions, and religious manipulation.

4. The Consequences of Religious Extremism Creating conflicts around religious sites that have stood for over a century and spreading hate under the banner of protecting race and religion directly harms national stability. Myanmar lacks the technological base of countries like Japan or China and relies on foreign investment and technology for development. As long as internal religious and ethnic conflicts persist, foreign investors will stay away. A single foreign factory could employ 500 local workers; a thousand factories could eliminate the need for citizens to seek work abroad. These conflicts cause a disastrous ripple effect that hurts the entire nation, not just marginalized minorities. Ultimately, this hatred fails to protect the race and instead damages the country’s image globally. No culture or faith built on discipline, integrity, and justice can be easily swallowed up.

Factual Context & Key Background Information

  • 969 Movement & Ma Ba Tha: The 969 Movement was a nationalist Buddhist movement that emerged in Myanmar during the early 2010s, urging Buddhists to boycott Muslim-owned businesses. It evolved into Ma Ba Tha (Organization for the Protection of Race and Religion) in 2014, led by hardline monks such as Wirathu. Ma Ba Tha lobbied for the passage of the controversial 2015 “Race and Religion Protection Laws.”
  • General Aung San’s Quote on Politics & Religion: During his address at the AFPFL (Anti-Fascist People’s Freedom League) conference in August 1946, General Aung San explicitly advocated for the secularization of politics, stating that mixing religion and politics goes against both democratic principles and the spirit of religion itself.
  • Samuel Johnson Quote: The quote “Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel” was made by the English writer Samuel Johnson on April 7, 1775. It refers not to true patriotism, but to the self-interested use of patriotic rhetoric by politicians to mask ulterior motives.
  • Glass Palace Chronicle (Hmannan Yazawin): Commissioned in 1829 by King Bagyidaw of the Konbaung Dynasty, this chronicle linked the lineage of Burmese kings directly to the Sakya clan of the Buddha to legitimize royal authority, a common political tactic in pre-modern Southeast Asian kingdoms.
