Myedu Muslims in Burmese History

Taungoo Era

In 1707, King Sanay Min of Taungoo resettled Muslim prisoners of war from Sandoway into Myedu. Between 1698 and 1714, nearly 3,000 Muslims from the declining Mrauk U Kingdom sought refuge under his rule. These refugees were divided and settled across Taungoo, Yamethin, Nyaung Yan, Yin Daw, Meiktila, Pin Dale, Tabet Swe’, Bhodhii, Syi Tha, Siputtara, Myedu, and Depayin. Records from 1783 note that these Muslims were relieved of military service in 1709 and permanently settled instead. This marks one of the earliest large‑scale Muslim resettlements in Upper Burma.

Konbaung Dynasty

During Alaungpaya’s campaigns to establish the Konbaung Dynasty, Muslim soldiers fought against him in Pyay. Wealthy Muslim merchants in Yangon surrendered warships and lavish gifts to him. His conquest of Syriam brought many Muslim artillerymen into his service, and after capturing Bago, he allowed Pathi Muslim soldiers to parade in their traditional uniforms. Later campaigns against Assam and Manipur brought additional Muslim settlers, resettled in Myedu and remembered as Myedu Kala or Kala Pyo. Chroniclers often referred to them as the “3,700 Muslim settlers,” recalling the initial wave of refugees and prisoners.

The Myedu Muslim Community

The Myedu Muslims represent one of the most deeply rooted Muslim groups in Myanmar’s social history. Their identity is not defined solely by religion but by centuries of integration into Burmese military, cultural, and local life. Many were descendants of Arab, Persian, Pathan, and North Indian soldiers who served in elite regiments such as the “Shwe Pyay Wun” musket corps. Others were linked to Pathi families resettled by Burmese kings since the 16th century.

Settlement Patterns

Myedu Muslims lived in villages around the old Myedu town—Sa Kone, Sa Kaing, Bhutto, Ywa Thit Kone, Myedu, Hmote Taw, Chaung Zauk, Chay Myit Kyin, and Wa Yone Bhut—near the military reservoir. While Burmese villages were reorganized into the new Myedu town, Muslim villages were left intact, preserving their distinct identity.

Though Myedu today is a modest village, it was once a significant administrative and military center under Pagan kings like Anawrahta, under Nyaung Yan rulers, and later during the Konbaung era. In 1763, Alaungpaya’s son ascended the throne as Myedu Min, later known as Hsinbyushin, underscoring Myedu’s royal importance.

Military Role

Historical records show Myedu Muslims as a central military force. In 1564, King Bayinnaung resettled Pathi families from Sandoway into Myedu. Later, in 1784, when King Bodawpaya conquered Arakan, a Myedu Muslim regiment was stationed in Sandoway. This highlights Myedu’s role as a hub for Muslim soldiers loyal to Burmese kings.

Demographics & Culture

By the 1921 census, Myedu Township had 1,923 residents, of whom 1,137 were Muslims—showing their demographic prominence. They worked mainly in agriculture and forestry. Despite practicing Islam, their lifestyle, dress, and language were almost indistinguishable from Burmese Buddhists. They spoke Burmese as their mother tongue, wore traditional Burmese attire, and adopted Burmese names.

Unlike later colonial‑era arrivals, Myedu Muslims were integrated into Burmese society from the royal period, with strong historical roots in defense and administration.

Religious & Cultural Legacy

The Konbaung kings built four great mosques (pali) for Muslim scholars in Myedu villages. Though many collapsed, they were rebuilt, and remnants of royal craftsmanship—such as ornate wooden carvings—survived until the 1980s. Prominent Islamic scholars from Upper Burma, such as Sayagyi Pon, Sayagyi Zon, and Sayagyi Hla, hailed from Myedu. The author of the MMNN post himself is a native of this heritage.

Commentary

The story of the Myedu Muslims illustrates how migration, war, and royal policy shaped Myanmar’s plural society. Far from being outsiders, they became defenders of the Burmese throne, blending Islamic faith with Burmese cultural identity. Their history challenges simplistic narratives of Muslims as latecomers, showing instead that they were integral to the kingdom’s military and social fabric for centuries.
