Paper Justice and the Fading Power of the United Nations (Original text by Aung San Oo – MMNN, expanded and edited)
It is time to re-examine the role and capability of the world’s largest body—the United Nations (UN).
Today, leaders facing formal arrest warrants from the International Criminal Court (ICC) for alleged genocide and war crimes—such as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Russian President Vladimir Putin—alongside Western leaders from the U.S. and Europe who finance and arm the Gaza war, continue to boldly take the stage and deliver speeches inside the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). They enter assembly halls and shamelessly threaten the destruction of nation-states.
When suspects under ICC arrest warrants walk freely in and out of the UN headquarters without hindrance, a critical question arises: How much longer can humanity rely on or trust this institution?
The core reason these individuals address the UN freely is that the United States is not a party to the ICC’s Rome Statute, ignoring its jurisdiction altogether. No matter how millions around the globe march for justice, if a veto-wielding power refuses to cooperate, the UN reduces itself to a bureaucratic body taking salaries, issuing formal statements, and expressing “deep concern.” ICC arrest warrants remain little more than ink on paper rather than actionable law. Netanyahu continues to travel, bomb, and act with impunity within UN corridors; Putin continues his bombardment; Min Aung Hlaing continues airstrikes on monasteries, schools, and civilian homes in Myanmar; and other military dictatorships across Africa rage on unchecked. Historically, the ICC has only managed to prosecute weak, powerless figures, failing to hold truly dangerous autocrats accountable.
Given that alleged perpetrators of genocide and their backers move freely at the UNGA, critical questions must be asked regarding representation: Why was Mahmoud Abbas, representative of the genocide-affected Palestinian People (the PLA, not Hamas), denied or restricted a visa by the U.S.? Does this breach the founding U.S. Headquarters Agreement to guarantee unhindered visa access to all accredited diplomatic delegates? Should UN Headquarters be relocated—at least temporarily—to neutral ground like Geneva to prevent host-nation political bias?
Perspectives on Boycotting or Not Attending the UNGA
When considering whether aggrieved or principled nations should boycott or skip the UN General Assembly, several pros and cons emerge:
Pros of Boycotting / Non-Attendance
Symbolic Protest: Directly delegitimizes the UNGA as a performative stage when actionable justice is ignored.
Refusal to Normalize Injustice: Signals that diplomatic rhetoric cannot mask unaddressed war crimes or impunity.
Cons of Boycotting / Non-Attendance
Loss of Global Platform: Nations forfeit one of the few global stages available to project their voice, frame their narrative, and address the global community.
Isolation: The absence of a country does not pause global diplomacy; opposition forces and hostile actors simply fill the vacuum created.
The Dilemma of Alternative International Frameworks
If a nation or bloc attempts to establish an alternative to the UN, rogue veto powers would simply boycott or sabotage it. Existing alliances or non-aligned groupings cannot easily serve as a replacement:
BRICS & Non-Aligned Movement (NAM): Characterized by internal ideological divisions, conflicting geopolitical priorities, and a lack of unified legal authority, preventing them from acting as a global alternative.
NATO: Entirely out of the question, as it functions primarily as a regional military security alliance rather than a neutral global forum.
Conclusion
Ultimately, power flows from military force, and the international realm continues to be governed by the law of the jungle. There is virtually no hope for genuine peace through current institutional channels.
At this rate, humanity may run out of answers until one day, an advanced AI—like Skynet—simply decides to step in and take over the world.
It is time for us to reflect: Should we rely on our own self-determination and resilience, or should we continue to place our faith in mercenaries, opportunistic politicians, and high-profile NGOs shouting over a powerless, nominal entity?
