Recent comments made by veteran filmmaker Pan Chi Soe Moe and actor Nay Aung at the launch of the military propaganda short film The Homecoming of the Jungle Boots have triggered widespread criticism across Myanmar’s social media.
Filmmaker Pan Chi Soe Moe, whose own grandson reportedly studies abroad and is therefore beyond the reach of Myanmar’s military conscription, argued that military service is something to be proud of.
According to him, people are not afraid of conscription itself, but rather of those who allegedly encourage fear of conscription. He further claimed that there is no country in the world without military service, citing countries such as the United States, China, Russia, India, and South Korea, and suggesting that serving in the military should be regarded as an honorable duty.
Actor Nay Aung echoed similar sentiments, questioning why young people flee abroad rather than “serve their country and people.” He spoke nostalgically of his childhood admiration for military uniforms and suggested that loyalty to one’s country should outweigh concerns about conscription.
The problem with such arguments is not merely their detachment from reality. It is that they deliberately ignore the nature of the institution the junta is asking young people to serve.
Serving a Country Is Not the Same as Serving a Military Dictatorship
Under normal circumstances, military service is intended to defend a nation and its people.
But today’s Myanmar is not a normal country.
Young people are not being asked to defend their homeland from a foreign invasion. They are being forced to defend a military junta that seized power in a coup against the will of the people.
There is a profound difference between protecting one’s nation and protecting an armed group that has spent decades oppressing its own citizens.
Since the military coup of 1962, Myanmar’s armed forces have been repeatedly accused of committing war crimes and serious human rights abuses against ethnic communities throughout the country. Since the 2021 coup, the situation has worsened dramatically. Peaceful protesters have been shot dead in the streets. Schools, monasteries, churches, refugee camps, hospitals, and villages have been bombed. Women, children, and elderly civilians have been among the victims.
Under these circumstances, being forced into military service is not an act of patriotic duty. It is being compelled to fight on behalf of a regime accused of crimes against its own people.
The World’s History Is Also Full of People Who Resisted Conscription
Supporters of Myanmar’s military draft often point to other countries and say:
“America had military service.” “South Korea has military service.” “Many countries have conscription.”
What they rarely mention is that many people throughout history have opposed military service when they believed the wars were unjust.
One of the most famous examples is Muhammad Ali, the legendary world heavyweight boxing champion. During the Vietnam War, Ali refused induction into the U.S. military, declaring that his conscience and religious beliefs would not allow him to participate in the war. As a result, he was stripped of his boxing title, fined, and sentenced to prison before his conviction was ultimately overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court. His stand later became one of the most influential symbols of anti-war resistance in modern history. [history.com], [en.wikipedia.org]
Muhammad Ali proved that refusing military service under certain circumstances does not make someone a coward. History remembers him as a man who chose principle over fear.
During the Vietnam War era, millions of Americans participated in anti-war demonstrations, challenged the draft system, and questioned whether their government was fighting a just war. Many historians consider these protests among the most significant peace movements of the twentieth century. [zinnedproject.org]
Even in Israel, Not Everyone Accepts Military Service Unquestioningly
Today, Israel is often portrayed as a society built around military service.
Yet even there, dissent exists.
Large anti-war demonstrations have been held by Israelis demanding ceasefires, criticizing government policies, and calling for different approaches to ongoing conflicts. [en.wikipedia.org], [jpost.com]
At the same time, some ultra-Orthodox Jewish groups, including anti-Zionist and Haredi communities, have protested mandatory enlistment into the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), arguing that military service conflicts with their religious beliefs and way of life. Thousands have participated in anti-draft demonstrations in both Israel and abroad. [jta.org], [jpost.com]
Whether one agrees with these positions or not, their existence demonstrates an important principle:
Military service is not universally accepted everywhere. Citizens in democratic societies often debate, challenge, and even resist conscription policies they consider unjust.
Artists Should Stand with the People
Pan Chi Soe Moe is over eighty years old.
Nay Aung is in his seventies.
Neither of them will be sent to the front lines.
Nor are their children or grandchildren currently facing the realities confronting millions of ordinary young Myanmar citizens.
If military service under Myanmar’s junta is truly a matter of pride, perhaps they should first encourage their own families to enlist before demanding sacrifices from other people’s sons and daughters.
For years, audiences supported these artists through their films and performances. Ordinary people bought tickets, watched their work, and helped build the comfortable lives they now enjoy.
Today, many of those same supporters live in fear.
Parents worry their children will be forcibly recruited.
Students fear arrest and conscription.
Workers disappear on their way home.
Families live under the threat of airstrikes and violence.
These are the people who once admired these celebrities.
These are the people whose lives have been shattered by war.
Before speaking about the honor of military service, perhaps it is time to listen to the voices of those who actually bear its costs.
History’s Lesson
Across different countries, cultures, and eras, people have sometimes refused military service not because they lacked courage, but because they refused to become instruments of oppression.
History remembers not only the soldiers who fought.
It also remembers those who stood against unjust wars.
From Muhammad Ali during the Vietnam War, to anti-war activists across America, Europe, Israel, and elsewhere, countless individuals have shown that conscience can sometimes demand resistance rather than obedience.
Military service may be honorable when it protects a nation’s people.
It ceases to be honorable when it is used to enforce dictatorship, suppress democracy, and wage war against the very citizens it claims to defend.
Additional international figures you could mention
- Muhammad Ali (USA) – Refused Vietnam War draft on moral and religious grounds.
- Joan Baez (USA) – Prominent anti-war activist during the Vietnam era.
- Jane Fonda (USA) – One of the most famous public opponents of the Vietnam War.
- John Lennon & Yoko Ono – Organized major peace campaigns against war.
- Bertrand Russell (UK) – Opposed conscription and war, even facing imprisonment during WWI.
- Desmond Doss (USA) – Served as a medic in WWII but refused to carry weapons due to conscience.
- Israeli “Refuseniks” – Israeli soldiers and reservists who publicly refused service in occupied territories or objected to particular military operations.
- Haredi / Satmar anti-Zionist Jews – Some Orthodox Jewish groups have openly protested compulsory military service and Zionist state policies.
Not everyone who avoided military service did so for the same reasons. Some individuals obtained legal deferments through education, family influence, or medical exemptions. History generally remembers anti-war figures not for avoiding personal danger, but for publicly challenging what they believed to be unjust wars and accepting the consequences of their stance. Muhammad Ali’s refusal of the Vietnam draft remains one of the most famous examples.
“Refusing conscription can arise from very different motives. Some avoid service for personal reasons. Others resist on grounds of conscience, morality, religion, or opposition to dictatorship. History tends to distinguish between the two.”
Historically, Donald Trump received multiple draft deferments during the Vietnam War era, including student deferments and later a medical deferment related to bone spurs in his feet. The publicly documented issue is not that he opposed the Vietnam War on principle in the way that Muhammad Ali did. Rather, the controversy has centered on whether those deferments allowed him to avoid military service while thousands of others were drafted.
The contrast is actually quite striking:
- Muhammad Ali openly refused induction, publicly declared his opposition, accepted the risk of imprisonment, lost his heavyweight title, and defended his position on religious and moral grounds. [history.com], [en.wikipedia.org], [zinnedproject.org]
- Donald Trump did not publicly present himself as a conscientious objector or anti-war activist during the Vietnam era. His avoidance of military service came through deferments rather than a public act of resistance.
