Loving one’s country, valuing one’s heritage, and protecting one’s culture are natural and necessary components of a healthy society.
However, when patriotism shifts into requiring hatred toward other groups, treating religious minorities as enemies, or suspecting all foreign workers, nationalism ceases to be civic pride—it becomes extremism.
Across different regions, political actors follow a strikingly similar playbook:
1/ manufacture a threat,
2/ target a vulnerable group,
3/ present themselves as sole defenders, and
4/ collect political power amid crisis.
The Mechanics of Scapegoating Across Borders
- United States: Far-right figures such as Jake Lang—who rose to prominence through pro-Trump mobilization and participated in the January 6 Capitol attack—frequently utilize anti-immigrant, anti-Muslim, and antisemitic rhetoric. By portraying himself as a politically persecuted patriot defending the nation against “globalists” and migrants, he exemplifies how grievance politics frames systemic societal complex issues around a singular target.
- Thailand: Extreme nationalist groups target vulnerable migrant workers. Groups such as the local “Moustache Gang” (Nhoat Khem Hmwe) and related movements draw on anti-immigrant sentiment to frame Myanmar migrant workers as economic and social threats. When an individual crime is committed, extreme narratives shift the blame onto an entire demographic, demanding collective expulsion rather than standard legal process.
- Myanmar: Under the Military Dictators and even during democratically elected National League for Democracy (NLD) government, nationalist monks like Ashin Wirathu and organizations like the Patriotic Association of Myanmar (Ma Ba Tha) actively mobilized around the slogan of protecting “Amyo, Barthar, Tharathanar” (Race, Religion, Sasana). By framing Islam as an existential threat to Buddhism, they erased the line between religious devotion and ethno-religious hatred—a driver of human rights crises and international sanctions documented by institutions like the UN Human Rights Council.
Expanding the Context: Xenophobia in Malaysia
This pattern is equally visible across Southeast Asia, particularly in Malaysia:
- Post-COVID Xenophobia: Beginning during the economic, social, and healthcare stresses of the COVID-19 pandemic, xenophobia against Rohingya refugees and foreign migrants surged. Initial political friction intended to undermine government stability transformed into widespread political rhetoric shared across multi-ethnic lines (Malay, Chinese, and Indian communities alike).
- Policy & Rights Debates: Current government policies focusing on mass roundups, detention, and repatriation of migrants remain central points of contention among regional human rights advocacy organizations, which argue that severe enforcement often violates non-refoulement principles.
- Social Media Harassment & Vigilantism: Online influencers and vigilante-style figures (such as local social media personalities like “Abang Koroy”) have actively targeted and exposed the locations of Myanmar nationals around migrant-heavy areas of Kuala Lumpur (e.g., Jalan Pudu and Jalan Gandek). In response, online groups (such as the “Roroa gang”) resort to targeted harassment, photo manipulation, and homophobic slurs—highlighting how real-world marginalization escalates into severe online toxicity.
The True Measure of a Civilized Society
Extremists rarely self-identify as extremists; they frame themselves as “protectors.” Yet, civilized societies function on individual accountability under the rule of law rather than collective guilt based on race, religion, or nationality.
Nationalism can unite a population, but when unity is built entirely on hating an out-group, it ultimately degrades the moral and legal fabric of the entire nation. Recognizing when national pride is being weaponized to conceal discrimination remains essential to preserving open and pluralistic societies.

Jake Lang
