YANGON — A controversy has emerged in Yangon’s South Dagon Township following public reports of an allegedly unauthorized religious building being used for large-scale gatherings, sparking intense debate online regarding local administration oversight and religious freedom.
Allegations of Unregulated Mosque in South Dagon
According to local reports circulated by community observers, an estimated 200-foot property located on Ayeyar Road in Ward 70 of South Dagon Township is allegedly operating as an unauthorized mosque.
Reports state that the site regularly hosts daily and weekly religious services, drawing crowds of over 500 worshippers. Local residents have expressed concerns over the scale of these gatherings, accusing the Ward 70 Administrator, U Yan Naing, and his staff of turning a blind eye to the situation. Critics warn that if the unregulated site leads to community tensions or civil unrest within the ward, local administrative officials must take full responsibility for the fallout.
Sarcastic Backlash Highlights Double Standards
In response to the complaints, social media commentators and public figures have pointed out the irony in targeting peaceful religious practices. Observers noted sarcastically that while the worshippers are accused of disrupting regional stability, their actual activities inside the mosque consist of praying and preaching moral discipline—such as refraining from alcohol, theft, lying, gambling, and injustice.
“It seems as though building a place of worship and encouraging people to live moral lives is being treated as an act of rebellion in this country,” one commentator remarked, pointing out the hypocrisy of critics who tolerate night clubs, KTVs, gambling dens, and drug trafficking, yet treat peaceful religious worship as a threat to national security.
While acknowledging that criminals exist within every race and religion, defenders of the congregation argue that targeting citizens who are simply practicing their faith and promoting good citizenship undermines true national stability.
