Free from Mutual Indoctrination / Clearing the Fog of Mutual Delusion

When discussing individual morality and ethics through the lens of sociology, we point out that moral standards are fundamentally shaped by social institutions such as the family, the school, and the government. Yet, when it is asserted that “morality also depends on the government,” many are reluctant to accept it.

People instinctively think: “What does the government have to do with it? Surely morality is primarily about how parents raise and discipline their children.”

This very mindset is a deliberate philosophy crafted and sustained by ruling classes and autocrats across successive eras down to the present day. In reality, the moral decay within a society is inextricably linked to its rulers. This is a fundamental principle of social science.

Let us illustrate this with practical, real-world examples:

  • Cyclone Nargis (2008): When Cyclone Nargis struck the Ayeyarwady Region, certain monks preached that the disaster was the karmic retribution of the local people because their livelihoods relied on fishing. At the time, many people—including ourselves—actually believed it.
  • The Indonesian Tsunami (2004): Around 2004, when the tsunami hit Indonesia and claimed countless lives, some monks toured our neighborhoods and villages with large projectors, distributing propaganda that the disaster was karmic retribution because Indonesia was not a Buddhist country. These are just a few examples from our lived experiences.

Whenever massive flooding occurs, people attribute it to:

  • “The karmic results of past misdeeds…”
  • “What is bound to happen happens; what is bound to fade fades—such is impermanence (Anicca).”

Climate change is dismissed in the exact same way: nature is simply delivering a mystical punishment for human greed, and “the government has nothing to do with it.”

Land confiscations and seizures of farmland were similarly brushed aside as karmic consequences and the working of Anicca—until the democratic era taught people that they actually had the right to protest.

Whenever a crisis strikes, instead of immediately scrutinizing the government’s administrative failures, lack of preparation, or flawed policies, people find psychological comfort in notions of Anicca and past karma. Consequently, public pressure on the responsible government diminishes. This has been a recurring political maneuver and preventive shield used by rulers and monarchs throughout history across the globe.

(In truth, the doctrine of impermanence—Anicca—as originally taught by the Buddha bears no resemblance to this fatalistic distortion.)

As Emperor Ashoka’s proverb goes: “Seeing this hare, one clears this thicket.” Right up to the Konbaung dynasty, traditional monastic education in Burma systematically indoctrinated the masses with notions such as: “Kings attain their positions through extraordinary accumulated merit, and insulting a monarch invites royal retribution.”

Monarchs in the West and the Middle East employed similar strategies, embedding the doctrine of the “Divine Right of Kings” through their own respective methods. However, Western societies eventually underwent three major social revolutions and experienced an Enlightenment. In contrast, deep inside the minds of the majority in Burma, the false philosophy that “it has nothing to do with the government” remains uncorrected to this day.

As the saying goes:

“The best way to imprison a person for life is to trick them into not even realizing they are in a cell.” “If you want to imprison a single person, throw them in a dungeon; if you want to imprison an entire populace, box in their minds.”

Ruling people over the long term requires more than just the sword; it requires mastering religion as an instrument. While religion serves as a spiritual refuge for ordinary citizens, for rulers, it is a tool of subjugation.

May everyone be liberated from all forms of religious and ideological indoctrination.

Analytical Commentary & Further References

The essay shared above critiques how fatalistic interpretations of religious concepts (such as karma and Anicca) are politically operationalized to deflect state accountability. Below are academic and historical frameworks contextualizing these sociological and philosophical themes:

1. Sociology of Religion and Social Control

  • Karl Marx and “Opium of the People”: Marx famously argued that religion functions partly to alleviate immediate suffering while simultaneously masking oppressive social structures, offering illusory comfort rather than systemic change.
  • Max Weber (The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism): Weber extensively analyzed how religious worldviews and ethical systems shape economic and political behavior, noting how religious legitimation has historically been utilized by ruling strata to justify social hierarchies and power structures.

2. The Political Instrumentalization of Karma

  • Fatalism vs. Agency in Theravada Buddhism: Scholars of Southeast Asian Buddhism (such as Melford Spiro in Buddhist Supernaturalism) have observed how popular religious practices often blend canonical doctrine with animistic and fatalistic elements. When suffering or systemic disaster is exclusively attributed to past-life karma (kamma), it effectively neutralizing socio-political agency, transforming structural grievances into personal or cosmic inevitabilities.

3. Historical Legitimation of Authority

  • Divine Right and Royal Ideology: Just as European monarchs utilized the “Divine Right of Kings” to discourage political dissent, traditional Southeast Asian monarchies integrated Buddhist cosmology (such as the concept of the Cakkavatti or Dhammic ruler) to anchor political legitimacy in moral and cosmic order. Critical historical analyses frequently examine how institutional religion interacted with court governance during the Konbaung period and colonial transitions.
