YANGON (People’s Spring) — A group of nationalist monks from the Association of Patriotic Myanmar Monks (formerly known as Ma Ba Tha) staged a protest and show of force in front of the Thingangyun Township Court on Tuesday, following the arrest of a prominent nationalist monk.

The monk, identified as Dr. Lakkhanasara, was apprehended by local township Sangha Nayaka (monastery authority) officials, disciplinary monks, and police. He is currently being held at the notorious Insein Prison.

According to U Panyawuntha, a fellow Ma Ba Tha monk who spoke to reporters outside the courthouse, Dr. Lakkhanasara faces two primary charges:

• Section 8 of the Export and Import Law for operating an unlicensed (“without”) vehicle.
• Section 23(a) of the Weapons Act after authorities discovered a knife inside the vehicle.

Selective Enforcement Alleged

During the demonstration, U Panyawuntha criticized the authorities, alleging that the arrest was politically motivated or driven by personal grudges rather than legal integrity.

“Driving unlicensed vehicles is something almost all monks do,” U Panyawuntha said. “The very township Sangha Nayaka and disciplinary monks who came to arrest U Lakkhana arrived in unlicensed vehicles themselves. They don’t arrest those people, but they target who they want out of personal spite. Don’t use heavy-handed double standards.”

Appeals to the Military Regime

U Panyawuntha openly called upon the ruling military council—which he referred to as the government—and the military-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) to intervene and secure the monk’s release. He emphasized that Dr. Lakkhanasara has been a staunch ally of the regime.

“U Lakkhana is a patriot who loves his religion and country. He has actively cooperated with the current government, chief ministers, and political parties to fiercely fight against the PDF and NLD, whom we view as terrorists,” U Panyawuntha stated. “Therefore, I want to appeal to the leaders ruling the country and officials from the USDP. Do not be sweet to terrorists while crushing your own allies. Do not dismantle the very pillars that are supporting you.”

He further urged township religious enforcement committees to focus their efforts on arresting individuals who damage the Sasana (buddhist religion) through misconduct, tarnish the religion by chasing women, drinking alcohol, or mismanaging donations, rather than targeting political allies and regime loyalists.

Background on the Movement

The Ma Ba Tha (Association for the Protection of Race and Religion) was founded around 2013–2014 by nationalist monks and laypeople. Following a ban by the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee (the country’s highest Buddhist authority), the group rebranded itself as the “Buddha Dhamma Parahita Foundation.” Historically, the faction has strongly supported the Myanmar military and staunchly opposed the National League for Democracy (NLD). The Association of Patriotic Myanmar Monks operates as a younger, union-style offshoot primarily active in major cities like Yangon and Mandalay, fully backing Ma Ba Tha’s nationalist ideologies.

မဘသဘုန်းကြီးက လက်ရှိ အာဏာသိမ်းစစ်ကောင်စီကို အစိုးရလို့ သုံးနှူန်းပြီး ၎င်းတို့နဲ့ ပူးပေါင်းဆောင်ရွက်နေသူ ဦးလက္ခဏကို အင်းစိန်ထောင်ကို ဖမ်းဆီးပို့ဆောင်ခံရမှုအပေါ် ဝင်ရောက်ဖြေရှင်းပေးဖို့ တောင်းဆိုခဲ့ပါတယ်။

မဘသ (အမျိုးဘာသာသာသနာစောင့်ရှောက်ရေးအဖွဲ့)တွေကို ၂၀၁၃-၂၀၁၄ ဝန်းကျင်မှာ အမျိုးသားရေးဝါဒီ ရဟန်းသံဃာတော်တွေနဲ့ လူပုဂ္ဂိုလ်တွေ စုစည်းပြီးဖွဲ့စည်းခဲ့ပါတယ်။ နောက်ပိုင်းမှာ နိုင်ငံတော်သံဃမဟာနာယကအဖွဲ့ (မဟန) ရဲ့ ပိတ်ပင်မှုတွေကြောင့် မဘသ အမည်ကို အသုံးမပြုတော့ဘဲ “ဗုဒ္ဓဓမ္မပရဟိတဖောင်ဒေးရှင်း” အမည်နဲ့ ပြောင်းလဲလှုပ်ရှားခဲ့ပါတယ်။
