On the 1982 Citizenship Law and the Rohingya Question By Ko Tharr Gyi
Everyone knows that the 1982 Citizenship Law was drafted by military leaders and is fundamentally unjust — yet it is selectively applied against Muslims. So if that law contains no federal provisions, then by your own logic of compliance, you should stop demanding federalism altogether. You follow the law when it suits you, while we are expected to obey a law that is unjust to us — a law we are therefore compelled to resist. Don’t come and try to fool us, “Maung Kalu.” I have read that entire law book from cover to cover, forwards and backwards.
There is one argument that racists keep recycling: “The word ‘Rohingya’ does not appear in the British colonial census!”
But when asked whether the census used the term “Bengali” instead — the answer is also no.
Looking at the records themselves, the British colonial census actually recorded them as “Arakanese Muslims” (Arakanite Muslims). The racists conveniently ignore this, acting as though the Rohingya never existed.
By their own logic, the same census would also render the Kachin, Karen, Mon, and Rakhine peoples non-existent — because British records used different terminology for all of them:

This is a classic tactic: selectively applying one standard to erase a single group, while ignoring that the same standard would erase everyone else too.

These are the deliberately misleading talking points of racists who want to make it seem as though the Rohingya people have no historical roots in the region.

The 1982 Citizenship Law of Burma, enacted under General Ne Win’s military government, effectively rendered the Rohingya stateless by restricting citizenship to 135 officially recognized “national races” — a list that excluded the Rohingya. Human rights organizations including the UN, Amnesty International, and Human Rights Watch have widely criticized the law as discriminatory and as a root cause of the Rohingya humanitarian crisis. The British colonial census terminology point raised here is historically documented and has been cited by scholars such as Jacques Leider and Moshe Yegar in studies of Arakan’s Muslim communities.
