U Kyaw Nyein, a legal expert for an Islamic religious organization, stated that the reason behind the decision to seize the mosque as public property is not yet known, as the full text of the judgment has not yet been received.(BBC)

Local residents told Khit Thit Media that an order issued by Kyaukme District Judge Kyaw Soe Khine—acting under the military council—to confiscate the Myoma Mosque in Naungcho town as public property amounts to a direct suppression of Islam.

According to reports, on October 22, the Kyaukme District Court sentenced Hla Htwe and Soe Thein, residents of Ward 4, Station Quarter, Naungcho, to 11 years in imprisonment each under Sections 50(y) and 52(a) of the Counter-Terrorism Law.

Alongside these prison sentences, the court ordered that a 55×60-foot plot of land located in Ward 6, Market Quarter, beside the Lashio-Mandalay Union Highway in Naungcho, along with the 50x60x30-foot Islamic Myoma Mosque built upon it, be confiscated as state revenue if the appeal/revision period expires.

Local residents stated that the ruling was handed down without reliable evidence and serves as an overt suppression of freedom of worship.

“The claim that they were supporting and collaborating with defendants was purely for their own self-interest. It is completely untrue that the two defendants provided funding to celebrate inside the mosque, or that they cooked and served danthamin (biryani) inside. There was also no movement of Ta’ang people in and out of the mosque—everyone was just living their normal lives. When people come into town, they don’t even go into monasteries without a specific reason, let alone the mosque. While Ta’ang people were in town, the mosque operated as usual, and the five daily prayers were permitted by them. These problems only started after the military returned,” a local resident told Khit Thit Media.

Locals noted that this is the only mosque available for Muslims to worship in Naungcho. Following the return of military council troops to the town, mosque trustee committee members Hla Htwe and Soe Thein were opened with cases, arrested, and prosecuted, while the Myoma Mosque was sealed off. Residents are currently preparing to appeal the district court’s unjust ruling, fearing that the mosque will be permanently confiscated and seized if the appeal deadline passes.

Another local resident explained, “Given the current situation, this likely gives groups like Ma Ba Tha a major talking point, creating a narrative that anyone associated with terrorism cannot retain religious properties, even if they are sacred. There are no other places to worship. If people are even seen praying, they get labeled as unlawful assemblies and arrested.”

CDM Captain Zin Yaw also informed Khit Thit Media that the military council is cracking down not only on Muslims but also on Christians. He noted that whenever Buddhist policewomen recite Paritta chants at the Dhamma hall, it is Christian and Muslim women who are tasked with looking after their children.

Following its retaking of Naungcho town in July 2025, the military council has been sealing off more than 70 houses belonging to individuals accused of having ties to the TNLA, DPLA, and PDF, alongside places of worship belonging to religious minorities.
