By Combining the Views of Aung Tin and Yar Za Than
Recent discussions among supporters of Myanmar’s military have once again focused heavily on China. Nationalist rhetoric and calls to confront perceived Chinese encroachment have resurfaced, while some voices have sought to frame current tensions as a looming “foreign invasion” that requires citizens to rally behind compulsory military service.
Yet beneath these emotional appeals lies a far more important question:
Who is actually responsible for Myanmar’s current vulnerability?
Many of those now speaking loudly about defending Myanmar from Chinese influence deliberately avoid addressing the root cause of the problem. They speak about China, but remain silent about the institutions and leaders whose actions have allowed foreign influence to deepen in the first place.
China undoubtedly pursues its own interests. Many Myanmar citizens feel that Beijing has exploited Myanmar economically, interfered politically, and shown insufficient respect for the country’s sovereignty. These concerns are real and deserve discussion.
However, placing all the blame on China ignores an uncomfortable reality: Myanmar’s own governments and military leaders created the conditions that made such influence possible.
As the Burmese saying goes, flies gather where there is decay. Before blaming the flies, one must first clean up the rot.
The Failure of the State
If the military authorities claim legitimacy as Myanmar’s government, then they must also accept responsibility for protecting national territory, sovereignty, and national interests.
Who is supposed to respond when Myanmar land is lost?
Who is responsible when foreign powers gain excessive leverage?
Who should defend the nation’s sovereignty?
If responsibility belongs to the entire population, then why does the military insist on monopolizing power while asking ordinary citizens to solve the consequences of its failures?
For decades, the Myanmar military has justified its political dominance by portraying itself as the guardian of the nation, the race, and religion. Yet today many citizens see a military that cannot effectively protect the country, cannot unite the people, and increasingly relies on coercion to force military recruitment.
The irony is impossible to ignore.
An institution that once claimed to protect the people now finds itself dependent upon compulsory conscription because so few are willing to volunteer.
An Uncomfortable Truth About Public Support
The military’s standing among ordinary citizens has deteriorated dramatically.
The situation has become so severe that even in the midst of an ongoing civil war, voluntary recruitment has struggled. Critics point to this reality as evidence that public confidence in the armed forces has collapsed.
If military leaders truly wish to understand the country’s condition, they must first acknowledge this fact.
Many of the same voices now demanding patriotic resistance against China are unable to explain why citizens would willingly join an institution they no longer trust.
After all, opposition to Chinese influence and support for military rule are not the same thing.
Most Burmese people dislike foreign interference in their country’s affairs. Yet disliking foreign interference does not automatically translate into support for military conscription or military leadership.
These are entirely different issues.
China’s Power and Myanmar’s Weakness
Some commentators have begun speaking as though Myanmar could simply confront China through nationalist sentiment alone.
Such thinking ignores geopolitical reality.
China today is one of the world’s most powerful nations. Even the United States views China as its principal strategic competitor. By contrast, Myanmar remains weakened by years of political instability, economic decline, armed conflict, and mass migration.
Many Myanmar citizens have been forced to seek opportunities abroad because conditions at home have become increasingly difficult.
Against this backdrop, emotional declarations about standing up to China often sound detached from reality.
China does not necessarily need to directly invade Myanmar to exert influence.
As some observers point out, Beijing possesses enough economic, political, and diplomatic leverage that overt military intervention would be unnecessary and unnecessarily costly for its international reputation.
The Legacy of Dependence
Critics further note that Myanmar’s military leaders have long maintained close relations with Beijing.
When anti-China protests emerged in the past, restrictions frequently came not from revolutionary organizations but from the authorities themselves.
Likewise, whenever Chinese leaders summoned Myanmar’s military leadership for discussions, senior commanders were generally quick to comply.
This long history makes current nationalist rhetoric appear selective and inconsistent.
If the military leadership itself has been unwilling or unable to challenge Chinese influence over many decades, what reason is there to believe that forcing young people into military service will suddenly change that reality?
The problem, critics argue, is not a shortage of soldiers.
The problem is a shortage of independent national leadership.
Remembering Operation 1027
Supporters of the military often invoke threats from abroad while overlooking recent events at home.
Operation 1027 demonstrated how rapidly military control could collapse in parts of the country under coordinated pressure from resistance and ethnic armed organizations.
For some observers, that campaign serves as a stark reminder that Myanmar’s immediate challenges are domestic rather than external.
They argue that China does not need to tarnish its image through direct intervention. Myanmar’s internal divisions have already created vulnerabilities that outside powers can exploit without firing a single shot.
A Different Path Forward
Ultimately, the debate is not really about whether China acts in its own interests. Like every major power, it does.
The deeper issue is whether Myanmar can build a government confident enough, legitimate enough, and independent enough to defend national interests without becoming dependent on stronger countries.
Many citizens genuinely resent external interference. That feeling is understandable.
But transforming that anger into ethnic nationalism or military recruitment campaigns will not solve the underlying problem.
Myanmar’s future will not be secured by slogans about foreign threats.
It will be secured only when the country develops leaders and institutions capable of earning the trust of their own people first.
Until then, calls to confront China while ignoring the failures of those who govern Myanmar amount to little more than political theatre.
