Recently, the Middle East has been facing worsening crises. In Palestine, ordinary civilians are suffering heavily, and many are being displaced from Gaza.

At the same time, in Europe, anti-immigrant and far-right sentiments are rising. For example, the Netherlands has begun expelling tens of thousands of Syrian refugees. In the UK, Australia, and New Zealand, right-wing groups are pushing to cancel asylum protections. In France, incidents of provocation, such as leaving pig heads at mosque entrances, have been reported. These developments signal that such conflicts could soon intensify in Eastern Europe as well.

What I especially want to warn about is Myanmar. In recent days, lobbyists have again started campaigns to make Myanmar a “Theravāda Buddhist State.” Yet, at the same time, the AA Commander-in-Chief recently reopened a mosque in Maungdaw and personally greeted Rohingya worshippers, which has clearly upset those anti-Muslim lobbyists.

Meanwhile, unresolved cases—like the Thit Ta Thwe incident and the murder of 10 Jamaat followers—are resurfacing. Some lay propagandists (not monks) have also been sharing provocative YouTube videos made abroad that insult Muslims, causing further distress within the Muslim community.

History has shown us where such tensions can lead. During communal riots in places like Meiktila, Taunggyi, Nyaung-U, and Taungoo, mosques and businesses were destroyed. Under successive military regimes, similar violence flared up in Kyaukse, Lashio, Mandalay, Rakhine State, and again in Meiktila. These incidents did not happen by chance—they were often inflamed by extremist anti-Muslim ideologies, sometimes linked with global far-right and Islamophobic trends.

One reminder: on 26 June 1967, during the anti-Chinese riots in Yangon, the military deliberately used mobs from areas like Pazundaung, Kyimyindaing, and Htandabin to incite violence. Well-known figures like Moe Kyaw, Ko San, Isa, and Esat were among those mobilized. Rioters wore blue wristbands so the army would not harm them. Large numbers of Chinese people were killed or injured, and their property destroyed. It was even said that an attack on the Chinese Embassy was encouraged by Military Intelligence Chief Colonel Tin Oo Naung. Later, in July 1967, China exploded a nuclear bomb in protest and openly accused Ne Win’s government of fascism.

The lesson is clear: when food shortages, inflation, and political instability combine, the military often uses communal strife—whether Chinese-Burmese or Indian-Burmese issues—to distract and control the population. The Meiktila riots were sparked by a quarrel in a gold shop, and yet the shop owner ended up imprisoned instead of protected. People’s suffering was deep then, and it is worsening again now.

Today, Myanmar is once again facing dire shortages, worsening poverty, and extreme hardship. In such an atmosphere, extremist lobbyists may be preparing to spark another round of bloodshed.

That is why I urge caution.
Do not be deceived or provoked.
Remember: mobs are often disguised soldiers in plain clothes. The so-called “ordinary rioters” may in fact be orchestrated by the army. Always see carefully, read carefully, and understand deeply before reacting.
