The talks in Kunming, mediated by China, between the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) and the terrorist junta have collapsed without any agreement, Myanmar Now reported.

The TNLA had offered to return Kyaukme and Hsipaw, but the junta—aware of TNLA’s weakened position since being left without strong allies—demanded that all towns except for Mongton and Namhsan in the Palaung Self-Administered Zone of northern Shan State be handed back. This hardline stance caused the negotiations to fail. The junta threatened that it would retake the two remaining towns by force.

During the global “1027 Offensive,” the TNLA had captured Kutkai, Namtu, Namkham, Namhsan, Mantong, Mongngawt, Monglon, Momauk, Naungcho, Kyaukme, Hsipaw, and Mogok. It later had to withdraw from Naungcho.

In Myanmar’s long civil war, it is almost unheard of for one side to surrender captured towns after calling a ceasefire—today’s situation is unprecedented. TNLA may now be compelled to launch an unexpected new offensive somewhere. At Naungcho, it was already proven that the junta could break TNLA’s defensive positions by using airstrikes, artillery, and waves of young conscripts as cannon fodder.

Meanwhile, the junta has hired another lobbying firm in Washington to gain political recognition. This time it is Virginia-based McKeon Group, reportedly working together with the earlier-hired DCI Group.

The Washington Post recently ran an editorial titled Myanmar’s Election is a Chinese-Orchestrated Charade, describing the junta’s planned election as nothing more than a performance staged for Beijing.

At the same time, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio declined to formally condemn Junta’s sham election and officially condemned and criticized the US embassies abroad for instructing them not to criticize the fairness of a country’s elections.

While U.S. foreign policy drifts aimlessly “like a rudderless boat in the open sea,” China is moving to gather more countries into its orbit. Beijing has scheduled the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit for August 31 in Tianjin, where Myanmar’s junta leader is reportedly invited and will be formally recognized on stage.

Meanwhile, Rohingyas around the world are marking the eighth anniversary of their mass exodus to Bangladesh caused by the junta’s atrocities. In Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, a major two-day international Rohingya conference was held, where Bangladeshi Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus called on the global community to firmly oppose Myanmar military’s crimes of genocide and ethnic cleansing and to reconsider relations with the junta. He also urged the ICC and ICJ to accelerate accountability efforts—including the long-delayed arrest warrant for Min Aung Hlaing.

The UN General Assembly is also scheduled to host a special session on September 30 in New York.

The junta leader, emboldened by receiving a short personal note from Trump, has been recklessly spending money on one lobbying firm after another. Yet the shadow of their heinous crimes against the Rohingya follows them everywhere, making true success impossible. Today, 1.5 million Rohingya remain trapped in the world’s largest refugee camp in Bangladesh.

The junta’s actions are like a criminal already accused of rape, now trying to court another young girl under the excuse of “love.”

The people’s just war will surely prevail.
