Is Ko Min Zin a genocidaire???
It is not very good that Ko Min Zin was arrested by China. After Ko Min Zin was arrested by China, the group that wants to move forward with Myanmar’s political journey without Daw Aung San Suu Kyi has completely lost its voice. At the same time, the angry, cursing crowd on Facebook that used to systematically inflame and exaggerate internal conflicts between ethnic groups—such as between Chin and Rakhine, Shan and Ta’ang, Ta’ang and Kokang, Rakhine and Rohingya, and finally between the armed NLD faction and the imprisoned/non-armed NLD faction—has become remarkably quiet.
If things had continued that way, it would look exactly like the trajectory since 2012, when groups like Moe Hein’s orchestrated racial tensions that drastically culminated in the Rohingya Genocide. That process led to harsh Western criticism of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and the stripping of her international awards. While Daw Aung San Suu Kyi was being pushed off the international stage, with the US tarnishing her name by linking her to the case and the EU stopping invitations to her, Min Aung Hlaing staged a coup. US President Joe Biden then displayed the picture of the imprisoned Daw Aung San Suu Kyi at the Holocaust Museum to humiliate her—leading directly to today’s political alignment.
According to what ethnic groups who have met with Ko Min Zin recently are saying, if his main job was to pit ethnic armed groups against the NLD, it’s hard to believe he wasn’t doing the same to instigate fights on other fronts. For example, pitting the military against the NLD, or inciting conflicts between the armed NLD and the imprisoned NLD. In the 2021 coup, figures like Oo Oo Hla Saw’s group from the AA (who are close to the Yaw Min Gyi monastery faction) and Daw Aye Nu Sein joining the SAC (junta), Thet Thet Khine serving as a junta minister, and finally military assets like Min Htike Soe San—who has no real political history and fled via unknown routes—shouting from America, could all be connected to Ko Min Zin.
Furthermore, the 2021 coup differs from other US-involved historical coups (like Ne Win in 1962, Pinochet in Chile, Lon Nol in Cambodia, Suharto in Indonesia, Park Chung-hee in South Korea, or Mobutu in Zaire) because Min Aung Hlaing hasn’t been allowed to visit the US. Therefore, the old notion that the US supports a fascistic, anti-communist military coup because it sits between the US and China might have been completely reversed. From there, the military took advice from Ko Min Zin to pit pro-Suu Kyi forces against her:
- Creating division between Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and the Western nations that support her.
- Pitting Daw Aung San Suu Kyi against Muslims.
- Pitting Daw Aung San Suu Kyi against ethnic minorities.
- Pitting Daw Aung San Suu Kyi against those inside her party who disagree with her path.
- If Ko Min Zin assisted in doing these things, then under the legal definition of mens rea (guilty mind) and dolus specialis (specific intent) regarding the Rohingya issue, one could almost say Ko Min Zin is the one who intended the genocide. If Ko Min Zin is a genocidaire, the military is simply the one executing his plans and policies on the ground. Much like the German military during the Holocaust used corporate collaborators like IG Farben and Krupp, the Myanmar military systematically utilizes Ko Min Zin to break up pro-Suu Kyi forces via its nurtured crony empires.
- Therefore, China arresting Ko Min Zin on espionage charges actually downplays his true crimes. If a US-China prisoner swap occurs later, he might easily walk free. If China’s allegations are true, the US CIA will definitely try to negotiate with China for his quick release. If he is a US spy as China claims, he will be freed soon. However, under the likelihood that the 2021 coup was not planned by the US but was a unilateral move by the military, Ko Min Zin remains incredibly dangerous. Similarly, if accusations that China ordered Min Aung Hlaing to stage the coup are true, then China publicly arresting its own man (Ko Min Zin) is just a show—meaning he is safely returning to his original handler, though Myanmar nationals in America who associated with him will face trouble.
- Ultimately, China arresting Ko Min Zin right now is not a good thing because it covers up his alleged involvement in the genocide. Similarly, praying for Min Aung Hlaing’s plane to crash is not ideal because he would die without ever being tried as a genocide perpetrator. Seeing military supporters posing as pro-democracy figures in the US, while back home civilians are dying, getting injured, and losing homes due to Rakhine-Rohingya, Rakhine-military, Northern Shan, and NLD-military conflicts… if we carefully re-examine these structural conflicts that have plagued Myanmar since 2012, there is a strong possibility that Ko Min Zin is a genocidaire. Thus, his arrest by China is not the solution. He needs to face an impartial international jurisdiction to ensure true justice.

- Geopolitical Context: Human rights organizations (like Human Rights Watch and ARTICLE 19) and geopolitical analysts note that his arrest was politically motivated. ISP-Myanmar extensively researches China’s economic influence and resource extraction in Myanmar, including the vital oil and gas pipelines. His detention was timed perfectly alongside a state visit by Myanmar junta chief Min Aung Hlaing to Beijing, signaling that China used an American researcher as a political offering to appease the junta and protect its strategic chokepoints.
2. Accusing Min Zin of being a “Genocidaire” / Military Strategist
- Fact Check: Highly Unlikely / Fabricated Conspiracy Theory. Min Zin was a prominent student activist during Myanmar’s 1988 pro-democracy uprising and spent years in hiding before moving to the US to study political science at UC Berkeley. It often faced intense criticism from mainstream pro-democracy groups for being too compromising with the generals. While the Facebook post doesn’t explicitly name Egress, it explicitly attacks political figures and analysts who don’t strictly align with the NLD/Suu Kyi orthodoxy, grouping them together into a perceived “third force” conspiracy that secretly helps the military.
My personal recollection aligns heavily with historical tracking of the crisis THAT Myanmar Military is solely responsible for the Rohingya Genocide and Atrocities on Muslims. But Rakhines actively participated and China was suspected to involve at the background.
