Hamilton – Saba:
The UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in Myanmar, Tom Andrews, criticized the international community for its inability to respond effectively to the humanitarian crisis in Myanmar, noting that international support has gradually dwindled, and called for necessary measures to be taken.

This statement came during a press conference on Thursday following a meeting of the UN Third Committee, which addresses social, humanitarian, and cultural issues, according to Anadolu Agency.

Andrews emphasized that the situation in Myanmar has significantly deteriorated each year since the military coup in February 2021. He noted that nearly 22 million people in the country are in need of humanitarian assistance, while over 16 million face food insecurity.

Andrews also referred to reports indicating that more than half of households in Rakhine State are unable to meet their basic food needs. He stressed that international support for the “invisible” crisis in Myanmar has declined, stating, “I urge UN member states to take the necessary steps and implement measures they have failed to apply so far.”

The Myanmar military declared a state of emergency in early February 2021, hours after the coup, arresting State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi and senior members of the ruling National League for Democracy, before announcing in late July the lifting of the emergency in preparation for general elections scheduled for the end of this year.
