The Myanmar military junta declared a temporary halt to offensive operations from May 6 to May 31. However, local residents report ongoing airstrikes, artillery fire, and attacks in Kawkareik Township, Karen State.
This marks the third such ceasefire announcement by the regime. The first, from April 2 to April 22, was purportedly to focus on earthquake recovery efforts in Sagaing. The second extended the pause until April 30.
Despite these declarations, the junta has warned that it will retaliate if resistance groups target military bases, block roads, or expand territorial control.
Ceasefire in Name Only
On the morning of May 6, just hours after the latest truce took effect, junta troops shelled villages in Kyaungdaw Township, Kawkareik District, according to a local resident.
“This morning, Battalion 546 fired heavy artillery into Koe War Lay village, destroying homes and farms. They also targeted Nyaung Yite Thar and Tha Yet Taw on the west bank. People have fled, but the military keeps attacking civilian areas,” the witness said.
Similar violations occurred during previous ceasefire periods. The Karen National Union (KNU) has repeatedly documented junta airstrikes and shelling in Hpapun District and other regions, where residential areas were bombarded despite no active clashes.
Escalating Violence Under Truce Claims
Though the regime claims to observe a temporary ceasefire, data from the National Unity Government (NUG) reveals a stark reality: from March 28 to May 4, the military conducted 282 airstrikes nationwide, killing 276 civilians and injuring 456.
