The bronze statue of General Aung San on Kennedy Island, in the middle of Kandawgyi Lake within Yangon’s Kandawgyi Nature Park, is a highly prominent and historic monument in Myanmar’s history.
Back in the BSPP (Burma Socialist Programme Party) era, President U San Yu used to walk around Kandawgyi Park every morning and always saluted the bronze statue of General Aung San on Kennedy Island.
One day, while U San Yu was saluting, the bronze statue of the General suddenly spoke: “Hey San Yu, I’m tired of standing here. I want to ride a horse!”
U San Yu replied, “Very well, General.”
When U San Yu went back and told General Ne Win, “The statue of General Aung San told me this morning that he’s tired of standing and wants to ride a horse,” General Ne Win got furious and scolded him: “Don’t talk nonsense! People will mock me and say I’m putting a lunatic in power! Be extremely careful with what you say!”
U San Yu swore up and down that the statue really had told him he wanted to ride a horse. So, General Ne Win said, “Fine, I’ll come with you tomorrow.”
The next morning, the two of them went together, saluted the statue of General Aung San, and left. On the way back, Ne Win scolded him again: “Be careful! Don’t ever repeat these crazy, nonsensical stories to me again!” (Since the statue remained silent in front of Ne Win).
The following morning, President U San Yu went out for his walk alone again. He approached the bronze statue, pointed his finger right at it in frustration, and grumbled: “What’s the matter with you, General? You said you wanted to ride a horse, so I brought him along. Why did you act like that and stay quiet?”
The bronze statue of General Aung San looked down and replied: “I told you I wanted to ride a horse… why did you bring me a giant ox instead?”
Context Note: In Myanmar political satire, calling a leader an “ox” (နွား – Nwar) implies they are stubborn, unthinking, simple-minded, or purely driven by brute force rather than intellect. The joke turns General Ne Win’s insults back on himself by having the national hero, General Aung San, view Ne Win as nothing more than a beast of burden rather than a worthy leader.

ဟိုစဉ်မဆလ ခေတ်က သမတကြီး ဦးစန်းယုသည် နံနက်တိုင်း ကန်တော်ကြီး သဘာဝ ပန်းခြံဘက်သို့ လမ်းလျှောက်လေ့ရှိပြီး ကနေဒီ ကျွန်းပေါ်မှ ဗိုလ်ချုပ်ကြေးရုပ်ကို အလေးပြုလေ့ရှိသည် !
တနေ့သ၌ ဗိုလ်ချုပ်ကြေးရုပ်ကို အလေးပြုစဉ် ဗိုလ်ချုပ်ကြေးရုပ်က “ ဟေ့ကောင် စန်းယု ငါ မတ်တတ်ရပ်နေရတာ ညောင်းပြီကွာ မြင်းစီးချင်တယ် “ လို့ ပြောသတဲ့ !
ဒီတော့ ဦးစန်းယုက ကောင်းပါပြီ ဗိုလ်ချုပ်လို့ ပြန်ပြောခဲ့သတဲ့ !
ဒီအကြောင်းကို ဦးစန်းယုက “ ဗိုလ်ချုပ် ကြေးရုပ်က မတ်တတ်ရပ်နေရတာ ညောင်းလို့ မြင်းစီးချင်တယ်လို့ သူ့ကို ဒီမနက်ဘဲ ပြောပါတယ်လို့ ဗိုလ်နေဝင်းကို ပြန်ပြောပြတော့ ဗိုလ်နေဝင်းက
“ မင်း တောပြောတောင်ပြောတွေ မပြောနဲ့ ငါ့ကို အရူး ဘုံမြှောက်ထားတယ် ဘာညာနဲ့ လူတွေ ကဲ့ရဲ့မယ် ကြပ်ကြပ်သတိထား “ လို့ ကြိမ်းသတဲ့ !
ဦးစန်းယုကလည်း အမှန်တကယ်ဘဲ ဗိုလ်ချုပ်ကြေးရုပ်က သူ့ကို မြင်းစီးချင်တယ် ပြောပါတယ်လို့ ကျိန်တွယ်ပြောတော့
ဗိုလ်နေဝင်းက ကောင်းပြီ မနက်ဖန် ငါမင်းနဲ့ လိုက်ခဲ့မယ် ဆိုပြီး နောက်တရက်မနက် နှစ်ယောက်သား ဗိုလ်ချုပ် ကြေးရုပ်ရှေ့မှာ အလေးပြုပြီး အပြန်မှာ “ မင်း ကြပ်ကြပ်သတိထား နောက်ကို ရူးကြောင် မူးကြောင်စကားတွေမပြောနဲ့ လို့ ကြိမ်းမောင်းသတဲ့ !
နောက်တရက်မနက် လမ်းလျှောက်ထွက်တော့ သမတကြီး ဦးစန်ယုက ဗိုလ်ချုပ်ကြေးရုပ်ကို အလေးပြုပြီ “ ဘယ့်နှယ်လဲ ဗိုလ်ချုပ် ခင်ဗျားပြောတော့ မြင်းစီးချင်တယ်ဆို ခေါ်လာတော့ ဘယ်လိုလဲ ခင်ဗျား ဘာ အချိုးချိုးတာလဲ “ လို့ ဗိုလ်ချုပ်ကြေးရုပ်ကို လက်ညှိုးငေါက်ငေါက်ထိုးရန်တွေ့သတဲ့ !
ဒီတော့ ဗိုလ်ချုပ်ကြေးရုပ်က “ ငါကမြင်းစီးချင်တယ်ပြောတာ မင်းခေါ်လာတာ “ နွား “ ကြီး လို့ ပြန်ပြောသတဲ့ !
