ASEAN at a Crossroads: Malaysia’s PM Warns of Rising Global Conflicts, Calls for Inclusive Peace in Myanmar<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kuala Lumpur, 30 May 2025<\/em> \u2014
Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim described the current global landscape as a \u201csobering moment in history,\u201d citing the unprecedented rise in armed conflicts\u2014from Ukraine and Gaza to Myanmar\u2014as the highest since World War II.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking at the 46th ASEAN Summit and the inaugural ASEAN-Gulf-China Summit held in Kuala Lumpur on May 26\u201327, Prime Minister Anwar emphasized the need for regional stability grounded in openness, cooperation, and consensus-building, in contrast to coalitions that promote division or arms races.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among key outcomes of the summit was the landmark agreement to admit Timor-Leste<\/strong> as ASEAN\u2019s 11th full member by October. ASEAN\u2019s current ten members include Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and the Philippines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Addressing the ongoing crisis in Myanmar, Mr. Anwar acknowledged the situation remains \u201cgrave\u201d but reaffirmed that ASEAN is \u201cnot standing still.\u201d He stressed that a sustainable resolution must be inclusive:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMyanmar\u2019s nationhood must be forged through inclusion, not erasure. The Five-Point Consensus remains clear\u2014any resolution excluding those most affected by the crisis will not endure.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The 2021 ASEAN peace plan, which called for dialogue among all stakeholders and an end to violence, has made little headway. Still, Mr. Anwar urged that diplomacy\u2014not escalation\u2014remains ASEAN\u2019s guiding principle:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur objective is not achieved through provocation or disproportionate responses, but through steady, principled diplomacy\u2014quiet where needed, but always firm.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The Summit also advanced ASEAN’s geoeconomic strategy, including deeper ties with the Gulf states and the launch of the ASEAN Geoeconomics Task Force<\/strong>, aimed at helping the region better coordinate responses to global economic shocks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On foreign policy, Prime Minister Anwar reaffirmed Malaysia\u2019s commitment to active non-alignment<\/strong>, engaging with all global powers to maximize strategic space without taking sides. While welcoming a \u201cstrong and enduring\u201d U.S. presence, he also underscored Malaysia\u2019s \u201cvibrant and firm\u201d relations with China and partnerships across Asia, Europe, and the Global South.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
