According to authentic Islamic texts, a person is called by their father’s name both in this life and on the Day of Judgment, while the practice of using the mother’s name at the grave is based on a weak narration.

The breakdown of the rulings, the grading of the texts, and the underlying logic explain the direct stance taken by Islamic scholars:

1. The Day of Judgment: Father’s Name (Authentic View)

The established consensus among Hadith scholars—including Imam al-Bukhari, Imam Muslim, and Ibn al-Qayyim—is that people will be called exclusively by their father’s name on the Day of Resurrection.

• The Evidence: In Sahih al-Bukhari, the Prophet ﷺ stated: “A banner will be raised for every betrayer on the Day of Resurrection and it will be said: ‘This is the betrayer of so-and-so, the son of so-and-so [father’s name]'”.

• Another text in Sunan Abi Dawud states: “You will be called on the Day of Resurrection by your names and the names of your fathers, so choose good names for yourselves”.

• The Logic: Islam places immense emphasis on preserving lineage and legal paternity (Nasab). Attributing a person to their father is viewed as an honor and a divine command. In the Quran, Allah states: “Call them by the names of their fathers; that is more just in the sight of Allah” (Surah Al-Ahzab, 33:5). This rule applies to both this world and the eternal life.

2. The Burial and Talqin: Mother’s Name (Weak View)

The custom where an Imam or caller addresses the deceased by their mother’s name during the burial—specifically during the Talqin (instructing the deceased in the grave)—is widely practiced in certain Muslim communities, but its textual basis is heavily debated. [1]

• The Evidence: This practice stems from a narration by Al-Tabarani, which suggests that when a person dies, the caller at the grave should say, “O so-and-so, son of so-and-so [the mother’s name]”.

• The Scholarly Grading: Prominent scholars of Hadith (such as Ibn Hajar, Al-Nawawi, and Al-Albani) have classified the narrations mentioning the mother’s name as Dha’eef (weak) or fabricated. Because a weak text cannot override a sound (Sahih) text, many scholars (like Shaykh Ibn al-Uthaymeen) view calling the dead by their mother’s name at the grave as an unproven tradition or religious innovation (Bid’ah). [1, 2, 3]

• The Alleged Logic: For the schools of jurisprudence or cultural regions that do permit or practice the Talqin using the mother’s name, classical commentators noted two symbolic reasons:

1. Certainty of Lineage: A child’s maternal bond is physically undeniable at birth, whereas paternal lineage—in a purely biological, worldly context—relies on legal marriage frameworks.

2. Shielding the Illegitimate: It was argued that using the mother’s name protects individuals born out of wedlock from being exposed or humiliated on a day of grief, ensuring everyone is addressed uniformly.

Summary of Exceptions

The only individuals who will not be called by a father’s name in the Hereafter are those who had no legal or established father in the worldly life (such as Prophet Isa/Jesus, who will be called Ibn Maryam / Son of Mary), or children born out of wedlock whose paternity was never legally established. They will simply be called by the names they legally carried during their life on earth.

By Dr Ko Ko Gyi In Islamic jurisprudence and theology, there is a clear distinction between mainstream practice and popular misconceptions regarding how a person is addressed after death.
