Philosophers often refer to this hypothetical scenario as the “state of nature,” where life becomes a perpetual struggle for survival.

Here is what would realistically happen to the world across different levels of society:

1. The Collapse of Global and Local Order

Rule of the Strongest: Without international law, powerful nations would freely annex smaller, weaker neighbors to seize resources, territory, or strategic positions.

The Rise of Warlords: On a local level, traditional governments would collapse. Power would consolidate around heavily armed factions, cartels, or warlords who could enforce their will through violence.

Might is Right: Laws would no longer be based on ethics or human rights. Instead, “justice” would simply be whatever the person with the most firepower decides it is.

2. Economic and Technological Regress

Destruction of Trade: Global trade relies heavily on contracts, maritime laws, and international trust. Without these, piracy and resource hoarding would destroy global supply chains.

Survival vs. Innovation: Humanity would stop investing in long-term goals like space exploration, curing diseases, or combating climate change. All human energy and technology would be redirected toward weapon manufacturing and defensive infrastructure.

Resource Depletion: Without environmental regulations or fear of future consequences, groups would aggressively strip-mine, deforest, and pollute the Earth to gain immediate advantages over rivals.

3. Psychological and Social Transformation

Hyper-Vigilance and Tribalism: Trust would disappear outside of immediate, tight-knit tribal or familial groups. People would live in a constant state of fear and hyper-vigilance, knowing that any outsider could pose a mortal threat.

Normalization of Cruelty: Without religious accountability (like Judgment Day) or cosmic consequences (like Karma), the psychological barriers against exploitation, betrayal, and cruelty would severely erode. Empathy would often be viewed as a dangerous weakness.

4. The Emergence of New “Might-Based” Rules

Paradoxically, absolute chaos is rarely sustainable. Even in a world ruled by the gun, a brutal form of order would eventually emerge:

Alliances of Convenience: Weak individuals would willingly submit to tyrannical rulers or warlords in exchange for basic physical protection.

Feudal Structures: Society would organize into strict hierarchies where the armed elite control the unarmed working class.

Ultimately, humanity would trade its modern civilization for a harsh, predatory existence where survival is the only metric of success.

To understand a world ruled entirely by the “Law of the Jungle” where cosmic, religious, and legal guardrails are stripped away, we can look to two of history’s most influential thinkers. While Thomas Hobbes focused on the political chaos of such a world, Friedrich Nietzsche looked at the psychological and moral shift.

1. Thomas Hobbes: The “State of Nature” and the War of All Against All

In his 1651 masterpiece Leviathan, the English philosopher Thomas Hobbes described exactly what happens when there is no common power to keep people in awe—a scenario he called the “State of Nature.”

The War of All Against All (Bellum omnium contra omnes): Hobbes argued that human beings are naturally driven by competition, diffidence (fear/distrust), and glory. Without a government or international body to enforce laws, every single person becomes an enemy to every other person.

Life is “Nasty, Brutish, and Short”: In a world where might is right, Hobbes famously wrote that there would be no place for industry, culture, navigation, or arts, because the future is entirely uncertain. Instead, there would be “continual fear, and danger of violent death; and the life of man, solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short.”

The Gun is the Only Currency: For Hobbes, in the State of Nature, concepts of “right” and “wrong,” or “justice” and “injustice,” simply do not exist. Force and fraud are the two cardinal virtues.

2. Friedrich Nietzsche: The “Will to Power” and the Death of Cosmic Accountability

The 19th-century German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche approached this from a psychological and spiritual angle. He famously declared that “God is dead,” warning that society was moving toward a collapse of universal moral foundations (like Karma or Judgment Day).

The Will to Power: Nietzsche believed that the fundamental driving force in all living things is not just survival, but the expansion of power. Without religious fear (like Karma or Hell) to restrain people, the “Will to Power” would operate nakedly and without guilt.

Master vs. Slave Morality: Nietzsche argued that traditional religions created a “Slave Morality” that values meekness, empathy, and equality to protect the weak from the strong. If you remove those spiritual consequences, society reverts to “Master Morality.” In this framework, the strong, wealthy, and powerful define what is “good” (excellence, strength, pride), while the weak and powerless are viewed as “bad” or irrelevant.

The Rise of the Übermensch (Overman): In a world without predefined cosmic laws, Nietzsche thought that the strongest individuals would no longer look to the heavens for rules. They would create their own values, ruling over others purely through the strength of their will and intellect.

Comparing the Two Perspectives

Feature

Thomas Hobbes

Friedrich Nietzsche

Core View of Humanity

Driven by fear, self-preservation, and a desire for security.

Driven by the “Will to Power” and the desire to dominate and excel.

The Final Outcome

Total chaos and terror. People will eventually beg a tyrant to rule them just to stop the constant killing.

A strict hierarchy. The strong will thrive and create their own rules, while the weak will be subjugated.

Role of Morality

Morality does not exist naturally; it is a human invention created by laws to keep the peace.

Morality is a tool used by the weak to restrain the strong. Without it, the strong rule openly.

In summary, Hobbes would say your scenario leads to a hellish nightmare of constant fear, while Nietzsche would see it as a brutal return to a natural hierarchy where the strong dominate without the burden of guilt.

Let’s dive into both of these fascinating counter-perspectives: Realism in International Relations (which argues that the world already operates like a jungle) and John Locke’s philosophy (which argues that humanity wouldn’t completely lose its mind).

1. Modern International Relations: The “Realist” View

Many modern political scientists argue that we don’t need to imagine a world without an international justice system—because we already live in one. This school of thought is called Realism.

Anarchy is the Baseline: Realists argue that the international stage is inherently “anarchic.” Unlike a country, which has a police force and a government to enforce laws, the world has no “global government.” The United Nations can pass resolutions, but it cannot force a superpower to obey them if that superpower has a nuclear arsenal or a veto.

Self-Help System: Because there is no global police officer to call when a country is attacked, every nation is in a “self-help” system. Survival depends entirely on a nation’s own military and economic power, or the alliances (like NATO) they form.

The Mytilenean Debate (Might is Right): Realists often point back to ancient history to prove this point. During the Peloponnesian War (416 BCE), the powerful city-state of Athens invaded the small island of Melos. When the Melians argued for justice and fairness, the Athenians famously replied: “The strong do what they can and the weak suffer what they must.” This is the ultimate real-world definition of Might is Right.

2. John Locke: The Optimistic Counter-Argument

The English philosopher John Locke (1632–1704) strongly disagreed with Thomas Hobbes. He looked at the exact same scenario—a world with no government or laws—and reached a much more hopeful conclusion.

The Law of Nature: Locke argued that even without written laws, police, or religion, humans are equipped with reason. Reason teaches us a fundamental “Law of Nature”: because we are all equal and independent, no one ought to harm another in their life, health, liberty, or possessions.

Natural Rights: Locke believed that human beings are born with inherent rights to Life, Liberty, and Property. In his view, most people naturally recognize these rights in others. Even without a gun pointed at their head, the average human does not want to murder their neighbor.

Why We Form Governments: If people are naturally good, why do we have laws at all? Locke said that while most people are reasonable, a few bad actors will always try to steal or destroy. Without a government, tracking down and punishing those bad actors becomes messy and biased. Therefore, people voluntarily create governments not out of raw terror (like Hobbes thought), but simply to act as an impartial judge to protect the rights they already have.

Directly Comparing All Four Perspectives

To map out how these different thinkers view your scenario:

Thinker / Theory

Without Laws/Religion, Humanity is…

What Keeps the Peace?

Thomas Hobbes

Violent, terrified, and chaotic.

Raw Fear of a ruler’s power.

Friedrich Nietzsche

Divided into natural masters and slaves.

The Dominance of the strongest wills.

Realism (IR Theory)

Constantly competing for survival and power.

The Balance of Power (no one attacks if the other side can fight back).

John Locke

Mostly peaceful, cooperative, and rational.

Human Reason and respect for natural rights.

Summary

If you lean toward Hobbes or Realism, a world without laws and spiritual consequences turns into a violent nightmare where the biggest gun wins. But if you lean toward Locke, you believe that humanity has an internal moral compass driven by reason, meaning we would still find a way to cooperate, build communities, and protect one another—even without the fear of a courtroom or Judgment Day.

If all global legal systems, moral frameworks, and spiritual consequences were completely removed, the world would likely devolve into a state of absolute anarchy driven by raw power.
