Former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill was a politician whose predictions were remarkably accurate. Before World War II, he was the first in Europe to warn of the threat posed by Nazi Germany. When Japan bombed the American naval base at Pearl Harbor, he famously declared, “Now we have won the war!” After the war, as the Soviet Union dropped the Iron Curtain over Europe, he heralded the start of the Cold War.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Churchill, renowned for such precise foresight, also made a prediction regarding Myanmar\u2019s independence. He reportedly tore up a document drafted by General Aung San detailing Myanmar\u2019s independence plan and warned: “Do not give Burma independence yet; it will lead to a bloodbath (civil war).”<\/em> At the time, Myanma people rejected Churchill’s words, believing he was an imperialist who simply wanted to hold onto the colony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, Churchill’s words have proven tragically accurate. The civil war that broke out following independence has lasted for over 70 years and continues to this day. The bloodshed that began with General Aung San and the fallen martyrs continues to flow like a river.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Churchill\u2019s prediction was not made without cause; it was based on an analysis of cause and effect:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Western democracies, power is seen as a mandate to develop the country, where personal integrity holds higher value than authority.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Historical Precedents:<\/strong> Churchill\u2019s father, Lord Randolph Churchill, oversaw the annexation of all of Burma and the dethroning of King Thibaw. Churchill was well-aware of the brutal royal massacres following King Thibaw’s ascension, where over forty royal family members\u2014including women and infants\u2014were executed with iron bars. The screams of women were drowned out by court music, and infants were killed against brick walls by intoxicated executioners to preemptively eliminate potential rivals to the throne. British observers were horrified by this ruthlessness to retain power.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Ethnic Diversity:<\/strong> Churchill recognized the vast multi-ethnic composition of Myanmar, anticipating that premature independence without structural stability would inevitably result in internal conflict.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    When Galon U Saw (the wartime Prime Minister of Burma) met Churchill in England, Churchill reportedly greeted him with: “Well, isn’t living under British rule better than living under King Thibaw?”<\/em> U Saw retorted, “Don’t say that; would you like it if Nazis ruled your country?”<\/em> Churchill reportedly stayed silent, smoking his cigar. Ironically, U Saw\u2019s own obsession with power later drove him to assassinate General Aung San and his cabinet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    If Mr. Churchill, who predicted Myanmar\u2019s fate, were alive to see its current state today, one could imagine him laughing from his grave saying, “Didn’t I tell you so from the start?”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
