{"id":7542,"date":"2026-09-04T12:11:10","date_gmt":"2026-09-04T12:11:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/myanmarmuslim.news\/en\/?p=7542"},"modified":"2026-09-04T12:21:45","modified_gmt":"2026-09-04T12:21:45","slug":"ai-vs-textbooks-can-artificial-intelligence-replace-medical-learning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/myanmarmuslim.news\/en\/2026\/09\/04\/ai-vs-textbooks-can-artificial-intelligence-replace-medical-learning\/","title":{"rendered":"AI vs Textbooks: Can Artificial Intelligence Replace Medical Learning?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>AI can sharpen the blade\u2014but the doctor still has to do the cutting.<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Adapted and translated from a post by Dr. Myo Lwin, based on the original post by Dr. Wunna Kyaw, with additional medical\/AI perspectives and fact-checking by Dr. Ko Ko Gyi @ Abdul Rahman Zafrudin<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udd2a Your Own Knowledge Is Your Most Valuable Possession<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is an old saying:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A knife stays sharp only when it is regularly sharpened, and a sharpening stone is needed to keep it sharp.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In my view, <strong>AI should be regarded like the sharpening stone.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The knife itself is <strong>our own knowledge, judgment and ability<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AI can help us sharpen our thinking\u2014but <strong>we still have to do the thinking.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That distinction becomes especially important in medicine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\ude97 The Chauffeur and the Professor<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a famous story associated with Nobel Prize-winning physicist <strong>Max Planck<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the story, Planck travelled around Germany giving lectures on the new quantum mechanics. His chauffeur heard the same lecture so many times that he eventually memorised it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One day, the chauffeur jokingly suggested:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cProfessor Planck, you must be tired of giving the same lecture. I know it by heart. Why don&#8217;t I give the lecture in Munich while you sit in the audience wearing my chauffeur&#8217;s hat?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Planck agreed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The chauffeur delivered the lecture perfectly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But during the question-and-answer session, a physics professor asked a difficult technical question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The chauffeur replied:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI&#8217;m surprised that in a sophisticated city like Munich, a professor would ask such an elementary question. In fact, even my chauffeur can answer it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And he pointed toward Planck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The story illustrates a powerful distinction between <strong>being able to reproduce knowledge<\/strong> and <strong>actually understanding it<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, there is an important fact-checking point here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Charlie Munger himself described this as an \u201capocryphal\u201d story<\/strong> when he told it in his 2007 USC Law School commencement speech. Therefore, it is best treated as an illustrative anecdote, not as verified historical evidence that this incident actually happened to Max Planck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Munger used the story to distinguish between what he called:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u201cPlanck Knowledge\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Knowledge gained through genuine study, understanding, effort and intellectual ability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">and<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u201cChauffeur Knowledge\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ability to repeat sophisticated information convincingly without possessing the underlying depth of understanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This distinction is particularly relevant in the age of AI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83e\udd16 AI Can Give Us Answers\u2014But Can It Give Us Understanding?<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Modern AI can produce an enormous amount of information within seconds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It can:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>explain difficult concepts;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>summarise textbooks and research papers;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>compare clinical guidelines;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>generate differential diagnoses;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>challenge our clinical reasoning;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>identify gaps in our reasoning;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>create case-based learning exercises;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>explain a concept at different levels of complexity;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>help us explore unfamiliar diseases, drugs and investigations;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>analyse medical images in appropriately validated systems; and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>assist with clinical decision support.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The World Health Organization recognizes that AI has significant potential in diagnosis, treatment, health research, drug development and health-system functions\u2014but also stresses the importance of safety, ethics, human rights, regulation and appropriate governance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The American Medical Association&#8217;s 2026 policy position similarly emphasizes that AI should <strong>support rather than replace physician judgment<\/strong>, with transparency, accountability and physician oversight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Therefore, saying simply that <strong>\u201cAI only searches for information\u201d<\/strong> is no longer accurate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AI can be much more than a search engine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But there is an equally important warning:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The fact that AI can explain something does not automatically mean that the doctor has understood it.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If we simply ask AI a question, copy the answer and move on, we may acquire <strong>Chauffeur Knowledge<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If we use AI to question ourselves, test our reasoning, consult authoritative sources, challenge assumptions and then apply what we have learned to real patients, AI can become a powerful <strong>learning partner<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udcda The Pleasure of Reading a Textbook<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a medical doctor, I understand very well why some doctors still love textbooks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a particular pleasure in reading a difficult medical chapter slowly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You read a paragraph.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You stop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You think.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You read it again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You connect it with something you learned years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then suddenly\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cAh! So that&#8217;s why!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A previously confusing concept becomes clear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And the real satisfaction comes when that knowledge eventually connects with an actual patient in front of you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That process is not merely memorisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is <strong>learning, reasoning and integration<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AI can certainly help create such moments too. A doctor can read a textbook chapter and then ask AI to explain an unclear concept from several different angles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the intellectual work should not simply be outsourced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>questioning, checking, understanding and judgment must remain ours.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83c\uddee\ud83c\uddf3 What About Mahatma Gandhi?<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another story in the original post concerns <strong>Mahatma Gandhi&#8217;s legal education in London<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This one has considerably stronger documentary support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gandhi wrote about how many students prepared for examinations by cramming notes for a relatively short period. He, however, bought the prescribed textbooks and deliberately read them because he believed that merely relying on notes was inadequate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lesson is not that every student must read every page of every textbook from beginning to end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The deeper lesson is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Do not confuse passing an examination with mastering a subject.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That lesson remains relevant in the AI era.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AI can make examination preparation dramatically easier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But becoming a competent physician requires something much deeper than producing correct answers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udc68\u200d\u2695\ufe0f In Medicine, Books Alone Are Not Enough<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is an equally important lesson from Sir William Osler, one of the great figures in modern medical education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Osler famously wrote:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTo study the phenomena of disease without books is to sail an uncharted sea, while to study books without patients is not to go to sea at all.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The quotation is well documented in Osler&#8217;s writings and later collections of his work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The message is beautifully simple:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Books without patients are insufficient.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Patients without knowledge are dangerous.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A doctor needs both.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Medical knowledge tells us what diseases can do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clinical experience teaches us how diseases actually present in human beings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And clinical reasoning helps us decide what to do when the patient does not fit perfectly into a textbook description.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is why bedside and patient-based teaching remain fundamental components of medical education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83e\uddd1\u200d\ud83c\udfeb The Importance of a Good Teacher<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another part of the original post deserves emphasis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A good teacher can sometimes accomplish in five minutes what a student has failed to accomplish after five years of reading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A student may repeatedly encounter a difficult concept without understanding it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then an experienced teacher explains it from a different perspective:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cLook at it this way\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suddenly everything falls into place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is one of the great gifts of medical education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And AI can sometimes perform a similar function.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We can ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cExplain this to me as a medical student.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cNow explain it as a specialist.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cGive me an analogy.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cWhat am I misunderstanding?\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cChallenge my differential diagnosis.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cWhat evidence would make you change the diagnosis?\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cWhat important diagnosis am I missing?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In that sense, AI can sometimes behave like a <strong>tutor or discussion partner<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But a human clinical teacher has something AI does not fully possess:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>direct responsibility for the patient, accumulated real-world clinical experience, observation of the learner, and the ability to supervise actual clinical practice.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AI should therefore complement good teachers\u2014not eliminate them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83e\ude7a My Own Perspective as a General Practitioner<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For me, the most useful model is not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Textbook OR AI<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">but:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Basic Medical Knowledge + Patient Examination + Clinical Experience + Good Teachers + Evidence + AI<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My own practical approach would be something like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. Start with basic medical knowledge<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A doctor must possess a foundation of general medical knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We cannot outsource the entire foundation of medicine to AI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. Examine the patient<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">History-taking, physical examination and direct observation remain fundamental.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No AI can replace the responsibility of actually assessing the patient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. Use AI to challenge and support clinical reasoning<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After assessing the patient, AI can be useful for discussing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>differential diagnoses;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>appropriate investigations;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>possible management options;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>drug interactions;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>guideline comparisons;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>unusual presentations;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>alternative explanations; and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>questions that we may have overlooked.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But AI-generated information must be critically checked, especially when patient safety is involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udc8a 4. AI Can Solve Surprisingly Simple Problems<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes the benefit of AI is not spectacular at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It may simply solve a puzzle that would otherwise waste valuable time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, a patient may remember only the <strong>brand name or generic name of a medicine manufactured in an unfamiliar country<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A doctor may not immediately recognise it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A reliable search or AI-assisted lookup can often identify the drug, its class and relevant information very quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That does not replace medical knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It simply saves time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And saving time can itself improve patient care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\uddbc\ufe0f 5. Visual Information Is Extremely Useful for a GP<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For a general practitioner, another major advantage of modern digital tools is access to <strong>medical images and visual explanations<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A GP sees patients from almost every area of medicine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unlike a specialist, we cannot realistically memorise every anatomical variation, dermatological appearance, radiological sign, pathological image or rare disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes a picture is worth far more than several paragraphs of text.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Searching for a reliable image of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>a dermatological condition;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>an anatomical structure;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>an ECG pattern;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>an X-ray finding;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>an ophthalmological sign; or<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a characteristic clinical manifestation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">can be much faster than searching through multiple textbooks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AI can make this process even more interactive by explaining what we are looking at.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, <strong>visual AI must not be treated as automatically correct<\/strong>, particularly when diagnosis or treatment depends on the interpretation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83c\udfe5 6. Finding the Right Specialist or Hospital<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even something as simple as referring a patient can benefit from digital tools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A GP may know that a patient needs a particular specialist\u2014but then comes another practical question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Where should the patient go?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The doctor may need:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the appropriate hospital;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the relevant specialist department;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the address;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>contact information;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>opening hours; and sometimes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>directions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A reliable online search can provide the information quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For patients in Malaysia, having the correct hospital address can even allow them to arrange transport through services such as Grab.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is not \u201cmedical intelligence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is <strong>practical intelligence<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And technology can make it considerably easier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83e\udde0 From Knowledge to Clinical Expertise<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps we should therefore be careful with the phrase:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Knowledge \u2192 Wisdom<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is not quite that simple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reading a textbook does not automatically create wisdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Neither does asking AI hundreds of medical degree with your Google search.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It makes an important point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A search engine\u2014or now an AI system\u2014can retrieve information in seconds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But <strong>retrieving information is not the same thing as becoming a doctor.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I learned this lesson long before Google, smartphones, computers or artificial intelligence existed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udcda How I Studied Medicine\u2014More Than Half a Century Ago<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When I was in high school in the late 1960s and later at Medical University in the early 1970s, I was never satisfied with simply reading examination notes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I listened carefully to <strong>my own class lectures<\/strong>, but I also attended tutorial sections conducted for other classes whenever I could.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I even listened to lectures given to <strong>younger classes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I wrote things down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I read them again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But, most importantly, I did not regard the lecture notes as the whole of medical knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I paid attention to the <strong>textbooks that our lecturers and professors themselves brought into the classroom<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I wanted to know:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What books were they actually using?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What did they recommend that we read?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So I read not only the prescribed textbooks, but also the additional books recommended by our teachers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then, approximately <strong>four months before the final examinations<\/strong>, I would begin a rapid but comprehensive reading of the selected textbooks, going through them <strong>from cover to cover<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During my <strong>second revision<\/strong>, I would return to all my lecture notes and the notes I had personally made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then, about <strong>one month before the examination<\/strong>, I would turn to the questions from previous years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I would try to answer them myself\u2014and whenever I could not, I would go back to the textbooks and search for the answers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There was no Google.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There was no computer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There was no internet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There was certainly no ChatGPT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There was only:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>the lecture, the teacher, the textbook, the notebook, the question paper\u2014and my own brain.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Looking back, I realise that this was not simply an examination strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was a process of building <strong>layers of knowledge<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Layer 1 \u2014 Listen<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Learn from the teacher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Layer 2 \u2014 Record<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Write down what was taught and what seemed important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Layer 3
