LONDON, May 21 \u2014 Health authorities in England today announced the rollout of a world-first vaccine programme for gonorrhoea, amid record levels of the sexually transmitted disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gonorrhoea cases in England in 2023 topped 85,000 \u2014 the highest number since records began in 1918 \u2014 with doctors warning of rising levels of antibiotic resistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Richard Angell, chief executive of the Terrence Higgins Trust, the UK\u2019s leading HIV and sexual health charity, hailed the initiative as a \u201cgame changer\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis alone could cut 40 per cent of new gonorrhoea cases,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

State-funded National Health Service (NHS) chief Amanda Doyle said it would be the world\u2019s \u201cfirst\u201d routine vaccination programme for the disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The NHS director of primary and community care described it as a \u201chuge step forward for sexual health\u201d, adding that it would also help \u201creduce the rising rates of antibiotic resistance strains of the bacteria\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The programme deploys an existing jab normally used to protect children against the meningococcal B disease, a serious bacterial infection that can cause meningitis and sepsis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Known as 4CMenB, it is part of the routine childhood vaccination programme given to babies at eight weeks, 16 weeks and one year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under the new programme, the jabs will be offered to those considered most at risk \u2014 gay and bisexual men with a recent history of multiple sexual partners or a bacterial sexually transmitted infection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis vaccination programme is a hugely welcome intervention at a time when we\u2019re seeing very concerning levels of gonorrhoea, including antibiotic resistant gonorrhoea,\u201d said NHS consultant epidemiologist Sema Mandal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn 2023 we saw gonorrhoea diagnoses reach their highest since records began in 1918,\u201d added the deputy director of the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During appointments, patients will also be offered jabs for mpox, human papillomavirus (HPV), and hepatitis A and B.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For decades, gonorrhoea \u2014 nicknamed \u201cthe clap\u201d \u2014 along with syphilis, had been regarded as Victorian-era diseases largely eradicated due to modern diagnosis and medicine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like gonorrhoea, however, the number of syphilis cases has also seen a resurgence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
