“Don’t even ask how terrified the generals are…”<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The area of the Wa Special Region covers 17,000 square kilometers<\/strong>\u2014compared to Singapore\u2019s 718 square kilometers<\/strong>. China has effectively taken control of a territory 23 times larger than Singapore<\/strong> without firing a single bullet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This write-up is dedicated to the armchair patriots, internet warriors, and fake nationalists on Facebook who beat their chests and scream, “Not an inch of Myanmar\u2019s soil shall be compromised!”<\/em> or “Sovereignty is sacred!”<\/em>\u2014just so they can understand the ground reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Journey to Pangkham<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A day before the battles in Laukkai began, I had an unscheduled trip to Pangkham (Pansang), the capital of the Wa Special Region, for work.<\/sup> Traveling from Lashio through Tangyan, we crossed the Salween River bridge and soon reached a Myanmar military checkpoint. The soldiers demanded a blunt fee of 5,000 Kyats<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once across the border into Wa territory, state telecommunication signals like MPT and Ooredoo ceased entirely. Chinese cellular networks took over, with Telenor picking up only sporadically under international roaming charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At first, the dirt road inside Wa territory was thick with dust. But as we drove further, it gave way to gravel, then solid concrete, and finally smooth, high-grade asphalt highways through the mountains\u2014wider, smoother, and far better engineered than the roads in Naypyidaw. When I asked locals, they told me China built these highways<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every corner was fully electrified. When I asked junior soldiers about the power grid, they mentioned local hydroelectric projects. But when I probed higher-ranking Wa officials, they laughed and admitted: “China supplies as much electricity as we need.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Infrastructure and Resources for Show<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Endless rows of rubber plantations lined the roads, but upon closer inspection, not a single tree was tapped for latex. The tea plantations were the same. It was all built for show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before reaching Pangkham, I spotted massive, unused paved concrete flatlands capable of landing jet fighters. When I asked what they were for, the locals simply shrugged\u2014a silent hint that they were built for Chinese military aircraft to land if ever needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Heavy machinery was carving through entire mountains. Convoy after convoy of heavy tipper trucks was heading straight into China, loaded with earth and raw minerals. When I asked what was inside, they replied, “Lead and raw ore.”<\/em> But is it economically viable to haul raw earth just for lead?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alongside them were 42 trucks carrying squared, pre-processed teak timber\u2014not raw logs, but cut timber stacked and ready. After counting 42, I stopped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zero Myanmar Presence<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Once inside Pangkham, there was not a single trace of the Myanmar government<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
