When negotiating for independence from British rule, leaders often had to navigate high-stakes, life-or-death situations with intense psychological pressure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his autobiography, Malaysia’s first Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman, <\/em><\/strong>recalled a moment when he was flying alone with a British pilot. He noticed there was only one<\/strong> parachute on board. Suddenly, the pilot turned to him with a stunned expression and asked whether Tunku would expel all the British after gaining independence. Sensing the immediate danger, the clever Tunku suspected that a wrong answer might prompt the pilot to crash the plane and escape using the solitary parachute. Smiling, Tunku replied that he would not do such a thing and would instead allow the British and all foreigners to stay and work in an independent Malaya. Relieved, the pilot smiled, engaged in a friendly conversation, and landed the plane safely. Tunku noted that while he had no concrete evidence of an assassination plot, it was a terrifying reflection of the anxieties of that era.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In stark contrast, Myanmar’s national hero, General Aung San,<\/em><\/strong> took a fiercely direct approach when faced with British hesitation. When a British official asked him what he would do if Great Britain refused to grant independence, Aung San didn’t hesitate. He forcefully ripped a pen from the official’s pocket, tearing the fabric completely. Looking the official in the eye, Aung San said that if the British refused to give them their freedom and forced him to use strength, the British Empire would suffer the exact same fate as that torn pocket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the rainy, overcast morning of July 19, 1947, the history of Myanmar changed forever in an instant when assassins ruthlessly gunned down the ministers inside the Secretariat meeting room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From our childhood, the only narrative we have all heard repeatedly is a single line: “General Aung San and the ministers were assassinated due to the jealousy of Galon U Saw.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

But is the actual truth really that simple?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this modern era, the British Cabinet Office’s “50-Year Rule” has expired, unlocking top-secret colonial files. Based on these declassified documents, the BBC produced and broadcasted a compelling documentary titled “Who Killed Aung San?”<\/em> While this documentary was once difficult to access, it is now readily and freely available for anyone to watch on YouTube.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When you re-examine the historical evidence presented in that documentary, the subtle, behind-the-scenes machinations and manipulations of the British are enough to give you goosebumps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first suspicious link in the chain is a roughly 6-foot-2 “schoolteacher” from the consulate, staying at the Strand Hotel under the alias “Tollman.” When Home Affairs Minister U Kyaw Nyein tried to have him investigated as suspicious, British Governor Hubert Rance intervened, saying “Ask me first,” and had the investigation delayed. The very next day, this “Tollman” was allowed to leave Burma immediately by plane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who Was “Tollman”?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

According to historical records that later came to light, this “Tollman” was very likely a member of British Military Intelligence, or an MI6 agent. Historical researchers believe he was a “key link figure” who, behind the scenes, closely monitored and interfered in the political situation during the interim period before Burma’s independence, and directed operations aimed at removing General Aung San and his colleagues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An even more brazen coincidence: at the exact moment the assassination was taking place, on the floor below the cabinet meeting room, in U Tun Hla Aung’s office, Southern Command Commander Major-General Nash and Chief of Intelligence Brigadier Knight were calmly drinking coffee. They denied ever hearing the sound of the Sten guns, but remarkably, at 11 a.m. that very morning, both of them boarded a British warship that was standing ready at the mouth of Rangoon harbor and fled straight back to London \u2014 making it all too obvious that, “as scripted,” their job was done and they were leaving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Secret of the Raincoat and the Aides<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Cabinet’s office and the meeting room were separated by only an accordion door. At the time, inside the office were the General’s aide-de-camp Bo Htun Hla and Brigadier Thomas’s aide Bo Than Win. Bo Than Win wrapped the General’s blood-soaked body in a raincoat and sent it to the hospital. But amid all the chaos, one gap remains in the historical record to this day: “to this day, no one knows who the owner of that raincoat was.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Rivalry Between Britain’s Two Major Parties, and the Black Hands Behind the Curtain<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Behind the great assassination of General Aung San and his colleagues also lay the significant political drama of rivalry between Britain’s two major parties. At the time, Prime Minister Attlee’s ruling Labour Party had agreed, by treaty, to grant Burma independence, while Winston Churchill’s right-wing Conservative Party fiercely opposed Burmese independence. Notably, U Saw made quiet, informal contact (“drinking Burmese\/Chinese tea together”) with old colonial hands from the Conservative Party. Historical evidence shows that those who supplied U Saw with weapons behind the scenes and egged him on \u2014 believing that removing the General would halt the path to independence \u2014 were former colonial officials belonging to the Conservative Party and British military intelligence figures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Interim Period and the Power Struggle, Legally Speaking<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A question naturally arises here: “Did the General and his colleagues get to form a government even without a Constitution yet in place \u2014 and under what law did they form it?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In truth, the General and his colleagues were not yet a sovereign government, but were serving as an Executive Council \u2014 an interim government. Under the Aung San\u2013Attlee Agreement, they took over the Governor’s authority and administered the country within the framework of the British-enacted “Government of Burma Act, 1935.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Taking advantage of this “great interim vacuum” \u2014 with the Constitution still being drafted and independence not yet formally granted \u2014 U Saw and the British far-right faction foolishly schemed that “if we eliminate the General right now and seize power, we can legally form a new government and take over the country.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Did the General Break His Promise and Grab Power?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Opposition politicians of that era \u2014 particularly communists and right-wing factions \u2014 sharply criticized the General, who had once declared during the anti-fascist resistance that “the military will not seize political power,” accusing him of breaking that promise and forming a government to his own liking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the historical truth is that the General fully removed his military uniform, declined the position of Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces, and handed it over to Bo Let Ya. He did not seize power as a military dictator; rather, within the interim government, he unavoidably took on the role of “Civilian Defence Counsellor,” tasked with holding the country together and preventing its collapse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the April 1947 election, the AFPFL’s landslide victory of over 90% proved that the General’s government was not one formed to his own liking, but a legitimate government backed overwhelmingly by the people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Did They Become Martyrs Simply Because They Were Assassinated?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

General Aung San and the other great leaders did not become martyrs simply because they were assassinated. History has many politicians who were assassinated, yet not all of them are remembered by history. The General and his colleagues live on eternally in the hearts of the people precisely because of their “martyr spirit” \u2014 having sacrificed their families and personal interests, giving everything for the country even before their deaths. The assassination merely threw a spotlight on their unparalleled sacrifice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The other great leaders who died were not included simply because they happened to be with the General, but because they were the key driving forces of the organization that architected Burma’s independence. Looking back at the list of the nine martyrs, one can find a true emblem of the “Union Spirit” the General envisioned \u2014 unity and fairness among leaders from every region and background.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That all these great leaders, from different regions and different backgrounds, shed their blood together while serving the country with one heart and one mind, stood as proof that they had resisted the divide-and-rule schemes of powerful nations and, united, had laid down their lives to build a solid foundation for the Union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Top-Secret Classified Files the British Still Withhold<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A question arises here too: “Have all of Britain’s historical secrets already come to light?” The answer is: “Not yet.” Although some files were released in 1997, the British government continues to keep certain information \u2014 deemed capable of harming the country’s national security and international relations \u2014 classified as “permanently secret.” In particular, the complete interrogation records of the British military officers who smuggled weapons to U Saw, the reports of the MI6 intelligence unit, and some of the original correspondence exchanged among top British government leaders have still not been made public to this day. This very fact is a glaring indication proving that involvement in the assassination of the General and his colleagues reached beyond U Saw, up to the highest levels of the British government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Conclusion<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

U Saw was merely a “proxy” \u2014 a blade used as an instrument \u2014 to protect British commercial interests (the risk of nationalization facing the BOC oil companies and teak companies). The true scriptwriters were the senior British military and intelligence officers who supplied the weapons and then fled back on a warship at precisely the right moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The secret script behind the British assassination of the great martyred leaders in 1947 is not something that remains only in history. It is also a great historical lesson showing that, to this day, Britain and other Western powers continue trying, through various strategies and in various forms, to sow division among weaker, smaller nations for the sake of their own geopolitical and economic interests. Although many years have passed, the pure sacrifice of the nine martyrs and the truth of history continue to live on and grow in the hearts of the people of Myanmar to this day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
