TEHRAN, May 17 \u2014 Iran\u2019s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei accused Donald Trump today of lying when the US president said during his Gulf tour this week that he wanted peace in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On the contrary, said Khamenei, the United States uses its power to give \u201c10-ton bombs to the Zionist (Israeli) regime to drop on the heads of Gaza\u2019s children\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One after departing the United Arab Emirates yesterday that Iran had to move quickly on a US proposal for its nuclear programme or \u201csomething bad\u2019s going to happen\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His remarks, said Khamenei, \u201caren\u2019t even worth responding to.\u201d They are an \u201cembarrassment to the speaker and the American people,\u201d Khamenei added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cUndoubtedly, the source of corruption, war, and conflict in this region is the Zionist regime \u2014 a dangerous, deadly cancerous tumour that must be uprooted; it will be uprooted,\u201d he said at an event at a religious centre in Tehran, according to state media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Earlier yesterday, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Trump speaks about peace while simultaneously making threats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWhich should we believe?\u201d Pezeshkian said at a naval event in Tehran. \u201cOn the one hand, he speaks of peace and on the other, he threatens with the most advanced tools of mass killing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Tehran would continue Iran-US nuclear talks but is not afraid of threats. \u201cWe are not seeking war,\u201d Pezeshkian said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
While Trump said yesterday that Iran had a US proposal about its nuclear programme, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi in a post on X said Tehran had not received any such proposal. \u201cThere is no scenario in which Iran abandons its hard-earned right to (uranium) enrichment for peaceful purposes…\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Araqchi warned yesterday that Washington\u2019s constant change of stance prolongs nuclear talks, state TV reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt is absolutely unacceptable that America repeatedly defines a new framework for negotiations that prolongs the process,\u201d the broadcast quoted Araqchi as saying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Pezeshkian said Iran would not \u201cback down from our legitimate rights\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cBecause we refuse to bow to bullying, they say we are source of instability in the region,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
