Who are the most important people? What is the most essential thing to do? These questions continue to resonate because they point us back to the immediacy of human life. They remind us that wisdom is not abstract—it is lived.

Faith Traditions on Past, Present, and Future

Across the great religions, time is not merely a sequence of events but a moral and spiritual journey.

Islam teaches believers to remember the past as guidance, to act righteously in the present, and to prepare for the Day of Judgment in the future.

Christianity frames time through salvation history: creation and fall in the past, redemption in the present, and eternal life in the future.

Judaism sanctifies memory through rituals, calls for covenantal responsibility in the present, and holds hope for messianic redemption in the future.

Each tradition emphasizes that the present moment is where faith must be lived—where choices shape destiny.

Buddhism: The Present as Liberation

In Buddhism, the Bhaddekaratta Sutta offers a strikingly direct teaching:

“Do not chase after the past. Do not place expectations on the future. The past is gone, the future not yet arrived. Only the present reality is to be seen clearly.”

Here, liberation lies in mindfulness—seeing the present moment as the only true ground of existence. Unlike traditions that emphasize salvation history or eschatology, Buddhism insists that freedom is found in awareness, here and now.

A Historian’s Warning

Our great historian Dr. Than Tun once said: “We learn history, not to become stupid!” His words remind us that the past is not a burden but a teacher. If we fail to learn from mistakes, we risk repeating them endlessly. Without dreams or plans for the future, we are like a radarless ship—adrift, circling without direction.

Einstein and the Relativity of Time

Modern science adds another layer of insight. According to Einstein’s theory of relativity, time is not an absolute, universal ticking clock. Instead, it is woven together with space into a flexible, four-dimensional fabric called spacetime. The rate at which time passes depends on relative motion and gravity.

GPS Satellites provide real-world proof. Moving quickly, their clocks slow down (Special Relativity), but being farther from Earth’s gravity, their clocks speed up (General Relativity). Engineers must constantly adjust them so our navigation systems remain accurate.

This scientific view shows that time is not fixed—it bends and shifts depending on perspective.

Islam: Time as Allah’s Creation

In Islamic theology, time itself is a creation of Allah SWT. He is entirely outside of and unbound by it. Past, present, and future are frameworks for His creation, while for Allah, all events exist in His eternal knowledge simultaneously.

Time as Creation: Just as Allah created space and matter, He created time. He is not restricted by it, nor subject to aging or change.

Relativity of Time: The Quran acknowledges time’s relativity: “A day with your Lord is like a thousand years of what you count” (Surah Al-Hajj 22:47), and elsewhere mentions a day lasting fifty thousand years (Surah Al-Ma’arij 70:4).

Time as Resource: For humans, time is the most valuable resource. Every passing second offers an opportunity to seek forgiveness, perform good deeds, and draw closer to Him. How we use our past and present directly shapes our future in the Hereafter.

The Power of the Present

Tolstoy’s questions, the teachings of religions, the historian’s warning, and Einstein’s relativity all converge on one truth: the present is decisive. It is here that we hold the power to act—for ourselves, our families, our descendants, our race and religion, our country, and the world. The present is the stage where worldly progress, spiritual well-being, and preparation for eternity converge.

Conclusion

The past teaches, the future inspires, but the present empowers. To act wisely now is to honor history, to prepare for eternity, and to live fully in the only time we truly have.

Extended from U Aung Tin’s FB post.

The Russian author Leo Tolstoy once asked three timeless questions: What is the right time to act?
