However, I occasionally come across his short pieces on Facebook. The other day, a friend shared his latest article, &#8220;Burmese Patriot.&#8221; While I have a lot to say about it, I will try to keep my critique as balanced and fair as possible. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I am writing this because I worry people might read his work and mistake it for sound, practical political analysis. I want to show that there is another, more grounded way to look at these issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That is not to say his article is entirely without merit. He raises valid points that deserve serious thought, such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The danger of romanticizing armed actors into infallible heroes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The public&#8217;s tendency to give violence a moral justification.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The widespread &#8220;role failure&#8221; of individuals not acting as they truly should.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the core issue with his writing lies in <strong>who<\/strong> he chooses to criticize (punching down), who he leaves out, and the power dynamics he completely ignores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. Ignoring Power Dynamics (Punching Down vs. Punching Up)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In political critique, the most fundamental rule is to <strong>follow the power<\/strong>. You must ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Who holds the coercive power?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Who controls the guns, territory, taxation, detentions, punishments, and propaganda machinery?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Who is actively stripping away the public&#8217;s choices?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead of taking aim at the most powerful actors\u2014the military, armed organizations, territorial rulers, arms brokers, and warlords\u2014Min Thway heavily targets the ordinary Burmese public, framing their situation as a moral failure. He even goes as far as declaring that &#8220;the Burmese public has utterly lost&#8221;\u2014losing their dignity, physical wellbeing, morality, and capability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the public certainly holds political responsibility, heavily blaming an oppressed population living under brutal coercion for &#8220;lacking shame, refusing to speak up, and willingly accepting abuse&#8221; is a textbook definition of <strong>punching down<\/strong> (taking the easy route of blaming the weak).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. Overestimating Agency vs. Structural Constraints<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The public is not an abstract moral subject. They are everyday people who must find food, protect their families, navigate checkpoints, survive between rival armed groups, and face constant risks of arrest, death, or displacement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To look at someone under extreme coercion and demand, <em>&#8220;Why don&#8217;t you speak out?&#8221;<\/em> is an unrealistic expectation of human agency. While individuals do have moral choices, they are heavily restricted by structural constraints. Min Thway\u2019s writing overemphasizes personal choice while completely downplaying these harsh, systemic traps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He briefly mentions arms brokers, warlords, and how Myanmar has become a dumping ground for surplus weapons, noting that these profiteers must be amused by the country&#8217;s plight. Yet, he stops short of a proper structural critique. He fails to explore:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Who runs the war economy?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Who enforces taxation and builds coercive governance?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Who relies on external patronage?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Who is holding the public hostage?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>By avoiding these complex questions and turning his focus back onto the public, he exhibits <strong>selective courage<\/strong>\u2014speaking out only where it is safe and easy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. Victim-Blaming and the Illusion of &#8220;Forced Performance&#8221;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Min Thae&#8217; accuses the public of consuming propaganda, asking if they enjoy being comforted by hollow words like &#8220;hero&#8221; and &#8220;martyr&#8221; after being sacrificed. It is incredibly easy to criticize the public for consuming propaganda; it is much harder to dismantle the power structures that manufacture it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He writes that the public &#8220;cannot control the gods they themselves invited,&#8221; &#8220;dare not speak against the green (military) or the red (resistance),&#8221; and &#8220;have turned gun-wielding individuals into saints.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While glorifying armed actors is dangerous, we must ask a deeper question: Is the public genuinely glorifying them, or is this behavior a forced survival mechanism driven by terrifying propaganda, fear, silence, and dependency?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In political theory, true domination is not just physical violence. It is the ability to force people to publicly perform actions or profess beliefs they do not actually believe in. Labeling the silence of an oppressed population as &#8220;shamelessness&#8221; is simply victim-blaming. There is a massive difference between <em>refusing<\/em> to speak and <em>being unable<\/em> to speak, just as there is a difference between genuine agreement and mere compliance for survival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4. The Flaw of Moral Purism<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Another major flaw in his article is his demand for absolute purism. He argues that a soldier must be a pure soldier, a monk a pure monk, a teacher a pure teacher, and a revolutionary a pure revolutionary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While this sounds ideal for preserving role integrity, real-world politics during a conflict are messy. People are forced into mixed roles out of necessity:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A teacher becomes a relief worker.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A doctor becomes an underground medic.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A politician becomes a fundraiser.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A young person is simultaneously a student, refugee, activist, breadwinner, soldier, and survivor.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Demanding absolute &#8220;purity&#8221; in such times offers zero practical guidance; it is simply thwarted idealism. Being pragmatic does not mean abandoning morality; it means figuring out how to maximize good and minimize harm within terrible limitations. Min Thway offers no such pragmatic ethics. It is easy to say, <em>&#8220;Do not take what isn&#8217;t yours.&#8221;<\/em> But how does that apply to a family with no rice left, a village caught between two armed factions, or a youth facing severe punishment if they do not serve? His writing lacks policy imagination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>5. Sermons vs. Political Institutions<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Min Thae&#8217; concludes that we must &#8220;rebuild our moral foundation&#8221; and &#8220;refuse to take what we do not deserve.&#8221; Ethically, this is correct. But in political theory, you cannot build morality without institutions. Telling people to be virtuous is a sermon, not politics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Real politics requires practical systems:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>To fix corruption, you don&#8217;t just say &#8220;don&#8217;t be greedy&#8221;\u2014you need living wages, independent audits, legal consequences, transparency, and a free press.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To stop armed abuse, you don&#8217;t just say &#8220;stop glorifying heroes&#8221;\u2014you need a clear chain of command, civilian oversight, complaint mechanisms, and war crime documentation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To help a terrified public speak up, you don&#8217;t just tell them to &#8220;have shame&#8221;\u2014you need whistleblower protections, safe civic spaces, and trusted leadership.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Min Thae&#8217; paints a beautiful, utopian picture of a pure, dignified, and moral society, but he provides no transition path or ladder to reach that height.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>6. Armchair Intellectualism and Elitist Contempt<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Armchair intellectualism does not mean criticizing without experience. More accurately, it means handing down severe moral instructions to those taking immense risks, while the speaker takes none.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Min Thae&#8217; harshly writes, <em>&#8220;If you have shame, you can just die.&#8221;<\/em> That is a sharp literary rhetoric, but in real life, who is he saying this to? Is he saying it to himself, or to the vulnerable public, the youth, and the working-class breadwinners? When a speaker shares none of the risk, telling others to &#8220;die with dignity&#8221; becomes a very cheap form of morality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, what is his epistemic authority? On what grounded evidence, field data, or comparative political analysis is he issuing a blanket moral verdict on an entire population?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He attributes the public&#8217;s short-term focus on survival and resource-grabbing entirely to &#8220;greed.&#8221; Yet, in a conflict economy defined by scarcity, skyrocketing inflation, displacement, and lawlessness, people&#8217;s time horizons naturally shrink. Choosing short-term survival over long-term ethics is a well-documented survival rationality, not simple opportunism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While avoiding the populist trap of &#8220;the public is always right&#8221; is a strength, Min Thway crosses the line from anti-populism into elitist contempt. Using derogatory terms to humiliate the public might offer a short-term shock, but it does nothing to rebuild civic society. You can hold a population accountable without stripping them of their dignity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Conclusion: A Better Hierarchy of Criticism<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Min Thae&#8217; treats the entire &#8220;Burmese&#8221; population as a single, uniform group. In reality, this category is deeply fractured by social class, geography, risk exposure, gender vulnerabilities, and levels of involvement in the resistance. Blending them into one uniform identity is a weak analysis that borders on ethnic essentialism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If one wants to meaningfully criticize Burmese society, the blame must be structured in a fair hierarchy:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Min Thae&#8217;s article completely inverts this hierarchy. He crushes the public first while pushing the actual rulers into the background. If we are to measure a revolution by its morality, we must measure the conduct of those with coercive power first, not the helpless actions of the powerless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><a
