Translated, expanded, and edited for international readers by Dr. Ko Ko Gyi @ Abdul Rahman Zafrudin, English Editor, MMNN.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Muslim Leaders Raise Mosque Reconstruction Issue at Interfaith Gathering in Mandalay<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>MANDALAY, June 7, 2026 \u2013 At an interfaith friendship meeting held in Mandalay, Muslim religious leaders highlighted an issue that has long troubled Myanmar&#8217;s Muslim communities: the inability to rebuild mosques damaged or destroyed by natural disasters and other causes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to a report by Voice of Myanmar (VOM), Muslim religious leaders and senior Buddhist monks from the Mandalay Region Sangha Nayaka Committee met at Oriental House, located at the corner of 64th and 27th Streets in Chan Aye Tharzan Township, Mandalay, at 10:00 a.m. on June 7.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the gathering, one Muslim religious leader informed participants that mosques damaged or destroyed during the devastating March 28 earthquake had still not received permission for reconstruction, despite the passage of many months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The issue was raised in a respectful spirit of interfaith dialogue and mutual understanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Previously, <strong>Mandalay Region Chief Minister U Myo Aung,<\/strong> son of General Nae Win&#8217;s vateran U Tin Hla ( Mandalay Division Chief) had explained to journalists that religious buildings could only be rebuilt according to their original dimensions and designs. New construction, extensions, redesigns, or expansions would not be approved under existing regulations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the event, Muslim representatives also offered alms and donations to the attending Buddhist monks and discussed ways to strengthen interfaith harmony and peaceful coexistence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Khalifah U Thein Win Aung, a Muslim religious leader from the K.A.F.T.G. family organization, confirmed the discussions and emphasized the importance of maintaining good relations among followers of different faiths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Longstanding Problem, Not a New One<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The difficulties facing earthquake-damaged mosques are not isolated incidents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For decades, successive military governments\u2014from General Ne Win&#8217;s socialist regime, through the SLORC and SPDC eras, and continuing under the current administration led by Senior General Min Aung Hlaing\u2014have maintained severe restrictions on the construction, renovation, expansion, and repair of Muslim religious buildings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Muslim communities throughout Myanmar have frequently reported that obtaining permits for mosque repairs is extraordinarily difficult, even for minor maintenance work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In one widely discussed case during the administration of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi&#8217;s National League for Democracy (NLD) government, a mosque committee reportedly received permission to replace a single corrugated zinc roof sheet. However, when two sheets were replaced instead of one, local authorities ordered the committee to remove the second sheet and reportedly imposed penalties. Whether symbolic or practical, the incident reflected the restrictive environment under which many Muslim religious institutions continue to operate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Restrictions Extend Beyond Mosques<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The problem extends beyond mosques alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Muslim communities have repeatedly reported obstacles involving:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Construction of new mosques.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Expansion of existing mosques.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Renovation and maintenance permits.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Establishment and expansion of Islamic schools (madrasas).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Registration and use of Muslim cemeteries.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Construction of community religious facilities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In many cases, permits that would routinely be granted to majority religious institutions have been delayed for years or denied altogether when requested by Muslim communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Human rights organizations, including the United Nations Human Rights Council, Human Rights Watch, and Amnesty International, have documented patterns of discrimination affecting religious minorities in Myanmar, including restrictions on freedom of religion and worship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Demolition of Historic Mosques<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most painful examples cited by Myanmar Muslims is the demolition of three historic mosques located within the grounds of the former Mandalay Palace complex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These mosques had historical significance dating back to the Konbaung period and were associated with Muslim communities that had lived and served in the royal capital. Their removal remains a source of sadness among many Myanmar Muslims who view the structures as part of the country&#8217;s shared historical heritage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Situation in Rakhine State<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In Rakhine State, many Muslim religious buildings were damaged, abandoned, confiscated, or destroyed during years of communal violence, military operations, and displacement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Muslim community representatives have also criticized the continuation of restrictions under local authorities and armed actors who now exercise control over parts of the state. Yet many observers argue that genuine reconciliation requires not only friendly meetings but also equal treatment under the law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Allowing earthquake-damaged mosques to be rebuilt would be a practical step toward demonstrating that all citizens\u2014regardless of religion\u2014enjoy the same rights and responsibilities in the Union of Myanmar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the country continues
