Edited and restructured with the assistance of ChatGPT in 2026.

Eid Mubarak, Happy Wesak Day, and Happy Birthday to my beloved grandchild.
Life itself teaches us that humanity becomes more beautiful when we learn to celebrate each other’s joys. For decades, I have greeted my Christian friends with “Merry Christmas,” my Buddhist friends during Thingyan and Wesak, and my Hindu friends during Deepavali. Respect for each other’s happiness is one of the foundations of peace.

Fourteen years ago, in 2012, I wrote an article called “My DREAMS.” At that time, Myanmar was standing at a crossroads. There were faint rays of hope after long decades of military rule. Like many citizens, I dreamed not only of political reform, but also of a future where justice, equality, science, education, meritocracy, and interfaith harmony would shape our nation.

Back then, Artificial Intelligence had not yet entered everyday life. Yet I imagined a future where laws, governance, and decision-making could be guided by transparent systems rather than by corruption, racism, nepotism, or personal whims. I dreamed of a country where even rulers themselves would be bound by law.

Today, some countries are beginning to experiment with AI-assisted governance, digital courts, smart administration, and transparent online systems. What once sounded like science fiction is slowly becoming reality.

Sadly, however, Myanmar’s journey moved in the opposite direction.

The dreams that once looked possible have, for many people, become nightmares. The hopes born after 2010 were shattered by hatred, mistrust, war, extremism, racial politics, religious manipulation, corruption, and endless cycles of revenge.

Yet, despite everything, I still refuse to surrender completely to despair.

There is an old Burmese saying:

“သန်းခေါင်ထက် ညဉ့်မနက်”
The night cannot become darker after midnight.

Even the longest night eventually moves toward dawn.

The Dreams of 2012

When I first wrote “My DREAMS,” I imagined Myanmar in the year 2048 — exactly one hundred years after independence.

I imagined a peaceful federal democratic union where:

Every ethnic group would have equal dignity.

Every religion would be protected.

The majority would respect minorities.

Minorities would not fear the majority.

Corruption would become impossible.

Meritocracy would replace favoritism.

Education and science would guide national progress.

Citizens would enjoy equal rights under the law.

Military power would remain under civilian control.

Governments would serve the people rather than rule over them.

I even imagined a future ASEAN Union with free movement, shared prosperity, interconnected highways, educational cooperation, and regional peace.

Some readers laughed at those ideas. Others called them impossible. But history often begins with ideas that first sounded impossible.

Martin Luther King Jr. once said:

“I have a dream.”

That dream was not fantasy. It was a moral direction.

Likewise, many freedom movements began as dreams before they became reality.

My Dream of Rule by Law — Not Rule by Men

One unusual part of my old article was the idea that laws, rules, and administrative decisions would one day become transparent, standardized, and protected from abuse through advanced computer systems.

At that time, AI was not yet part of ordinary discussion.

But my frustration was simple.

In many developing countries — especially under authoritarian systems — laws are often applied differently depending on:

race,

religion,

political loyalty,

wealth,

family connections,

military influence,

or corruption.

I dreamed of a society where:

the poor man and the president would be equal before the law,

bribery would become difficult,

transparency would become normal,

and abuse of power would become traceable.

Of course, technology alone cannot create justice. A corrupt society can also misuse technology. An unjust government can weaponize AI for surveillance and oppression.

Therefore, ethics, compassion, human rights, and accountability must always remain above machines.

Still, the idea itself was not foolish. Even today, many countries are experimenting with:

AI-assisted public services,

digital courts,

transparent procurement systems,

online governance,

anti-corruption monitoring,

and automated public administration.

The dream was never about replacing humanity. It was about reducing human abuse of power.

From Hope to Nightmare

When I revisit my old writing today, I feel both sadness and irony.

Instead of moving toward reconciliation, Myanmar descended deeper into division.

Instead of building trust between communities, hatred multiplied.

Instead of creating a truly inclusive federal union, many groups became trapped in cycles of fear, propaganda, revenge, and distrust.

Extremists from all sides poisoned public discourse. Moderates became weaker. And ordinary civilians suffered the most.

Millions lost homes, education, opportunities, security, and hope.

Many young people now know only instability.

Yet history teaches us that nations can recover — even after terrible darkness. Germany recovered after Hitler. Japan rebuilt after war. Bosnia survived genocide. South Africa emerged from apartheid. Cambodia survived Pol Pot.

Recovery is possible when people eventually become exhausted by hatred.

The Most Important Dream

Today, my dream is much simpler than before.

I no longer dream mainly about grand highways, futuristic technology, or giant regional federations.

My greatest dream now is this:

that Myanmar’s children will not inherit endless hatred,

that no child will be discriminated against because of race or religion,

that education will become more important than propaganda,

that merit will matter more than connections,

and that future generations can disagree politically without killing each other.

A civilized society is not one where everyone thinks alike. A civilized society is one where people with different beliefs can still live together peacefully.

Dreams Still Matter

Some people mock dreamers.

But without dreamers:

there would be no independence movements,

no human rights reforms,

no scientific discoveries,

no democracy,

no abolition of slavery,

no civil rights movements,

and no progress.

Dreams alone are not enough. But societies without dreams become prisons.

As long as human beings continue to imagine a better future, hope remains alive.

And perhaps one day, after this long midnight, Myanmar too may finally see dawn.

Quran 8:53

The Quran reminds us:

“Indeed, Allah will not change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves.”

This verse is not only about religion. It is also about responsibility.

No nation improves merely by blaming others. Change requires:

self-reflection,

education,

discipline,

compassion,

justice,

and courage.

Read also: My DREAMS

Dreams, Hope, and the Long Night Before Dawn Originally inspired by a post written in 2012 by Dr. Ko Ko Gyi (Dr. Abdul Rahman Zafrudin).
