We were once trained and inspired to reach for the stars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As Luyechun\u2014\u201cOutstanding Students\u201d\u2014we were selected, celebrated, and nurtured as the brightest of our generation. The system told us we were the future of the nation. We believed it. We carried that pride in our hearts for decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, more than half a century later, we look around\u2014and we see where those \u201cstars\u201d have taken us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recently, members of the Luyechun (1964\u20131988) cohort proudly announced that at least twelve of our fellow Luyechuns have been appointed to high-ranking positions in the current administration under Senior General Min Aung Hlaing. Ministers, deputy ministers, council members\u2014positions of power and influence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yes, it is an achievement. But is it a moment for pride\u2014or for reflection?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By the way, there were about ten LYC Generals, one LYC Monk, one Rohingya LYC and many Muslim LYCs.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

From Stars to Orbits<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

We were trained to soar high. But not all trajectories are the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some Luyechuns, like a spacecraft, merely circle the system\u2014never escaping its gravitational pull. Like NASA\u2019s Artemis II mission, they orbit, observe, and return safely to where they began.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some, tragically, took a different path. They joined movements for change, stood on the side of justice as they saw it, and paid a heavy price\u2014imprisonment, suffering, even death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A few, perhaps, rose above all divisions\u2014earning respect across communities, reaching what one might metaphorically call \u201cheaven.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But we must also confront an uncomfortable truth:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many, sadly, have descended into what can only be described as a moral \u201chell\u201d\u2014not by fate, but by choices. By aligning themselves with systems that oppress, exclude, or harm others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A System That Shaped Us<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Luyechun project, born during the era of General Ne Win, did not merely identify academic excellence. It also shaped minds\u2014subtly, persistently\u2014within a particular national narrative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We were exposed to state institutions, honored by authorities, and guided\u2014consciously or unconsciously\u2014toward loyalty and conformity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To be fair, not all were \u201cbrainwashed.\u201d That would be too simplistic, and unjust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But it would also be na\u00efve to deny that many were influenced\u2014deeply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The result?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A generation of high achievers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
