Myanmar\u2019s history is not short of heroes, martyrs, revolutions, or noble intentions.
What it lacks is the ability to see its own recurring pattern<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We remember events separately.
We mourn tragedies individually.
But we rarely connect them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the beads are finally strung together, they form a single necklace \u2014 and that necklace tells one painful story:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Again and again, Myanmar\u2019s movements have collapsed not because they were defeated, but because they consumed themselves from within.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The First Bead: The J\u0101taka of the Hinthas<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

An ancient Buddhist J\u0101taka tells of ninety thousand Hinthas<\/strong> \u2014 the revered Ruddy Shelducks \u2014 sheltering together inside a cave during a long monsoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A giant spider blocked the entrance with its web.
When united, the Hinthas survived.
They fed a strong young Hintha, broke the web, and escaped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But one year, the rains lasted five months.
Food ran out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the name of survival, the Hinthas began to eat:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n
  • first their own eggs,<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • then the young,<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • then the old.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    When the rain finally stopped, the spider had spun five layers of web<\/strong>.
    The Hinthas, weakened by consuming their own kind, tried to break free once more \u2014 and died trapped in the fifth web.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The spider did not kill them.
    They destroyed themselves.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
