With this collapse of a once-glorious kingdom that had flourished for centuries, the <strong>49th and last monarch<\/strong>, <strong>King Maha Thammada Raza<\/strong>, together with the kingdom\u2019s most treasured regalia\u2014including the sacred <strong>Maha Muni Image<\/strong>\u2014was forcibly taken to the Konbaung royal seat at <strong>Amarapura<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"580\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/myanmarmuslim.news\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/image-66.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4291\" srcset=\"https:\/\/myanmarmuslim.news\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/image-66.png 580w, https:\/\/myanmarmuslim.news\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/image-66-295x300.png 295w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The king, his family members, scholars, court officials and military officers were arrested and deported.<br>For a monarch who once reigned in splendour, this descent into the life of a royal prisoner caused great emotional suffering. Historical accounts note that he could not bear the humiliation and pressure, and soon <strong>ended his own life by poison<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although official royal chronicles never clearly record the exact location of his burial, a strong and persistent oral tradition has survived among local residents in Mandalay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to this longstanding historical belief, <strong>King Maha Thammada Raza converted to Islam<\/strong> in his final days and was <strong>quietly buried inside the compound of the Shwe Phone Shein Mosque in Mandalay<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"443\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/myanmarmuslim.news\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/image-68.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4293\" srcset=\"https:\/\/myanmarmuslim.news\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/image-68.png 443w, https:\/\/myanmarmuslim.news\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/image-68-225x300.png 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 443px) 100vw, 443px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why this belief emerged<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The background lies in the multicultural and multi-religious history of the old Rakhine Kingdom.<br>Many Rakhine kings, alongside their Buddhist titles, also adopted <strong>Islamic honorific names such as \u201cShah.\u201d<\/strong> Within the Mrauk-U court, there had long been:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>high-ranking Muslim ministers,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Muslim military commanders, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>numerous Muslim soldiers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>(Rakhine Kingdom was under the Bengal Sultans and the Rakhine coins were printed with Arabic Islamic words of declaration of faith.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"759\" height=\"787\" src=\"https:\/\/myanmarmuslim.news\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/image-69.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4294\" srcset=\"https:\/\/myanmarmuslim.news\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/image-69.png 759w, https:\/\/myanmarmuslim.news\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/image-69-289x300.png 289w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 759px) 100vw, 759px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Muslim role in the Maha Muni Pagoda construction<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Historical records also show that during the re-construction of the <strong>Maha Muni Pagoda<\/strong> of the Rakhine in Mandalay , Muslim military engineers and craftsmen served alongside the king. One Muslim officer, <strong>U Shwe Oo<\/strong>, played a crucial role but faced difficulty performing the five obligatory Prayers rituals required at the pagoda site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Upon learning this, <strong>King Bodawpaya<\/strong> permitted the construction of a small prayer hall nearby for Muslims. This simple bamboo mosque was the origin of the <strong>Shwe Phone Shein Mosque<\/strong>, later rebuilt in brick after a fire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This mosque is therefore older than the founding of Mandalay city itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"720\" height=\"540\" src=\"https:\/\/myanmarmuslim.news\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/image-70.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4295\" srcset=\"https:\/\/myanmarmuslim.news\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/image-70.png 720w, https:\/\/myanmarmuslim.news\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/image-70-300x225.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why Rakhine Muslims guarded the Maha Muni Image<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When the Konbaung king transported the Maha Muni Image from Rakhine to Amarapura\/Mandalay, Rakhine Muslim soldiers were forced to participate in carrying the massive Buddha image.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Later, due to repeated thefts and allegations of sabotage, the Burmese king ordered <strong>Muslims to stay nearby as guards<\/strong> of the pagoda.<br>The key to the pagoda was entrusted to them, and they were allowed to maintain their mosque\u2014Shwe Phone Shein\u2014close to the sacred site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Final days of the Rakhine king<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In his last days, King Maha Thammada Raza lived among Muslim soldiers who had served him since the Rakhine era. Surrounded by them and having embraced Islam, it is believed that\u2014according to historical fragments and oral traditions\u2014he was buried within the Shwe Phone Shein Mosque compound with the
