Despite battlefield losses and domestic discontent, the junta remains entrenched\u2014propped up by powerful external backers who continue to fuel its war machine. The message is clear: there will be no quick or easy end. The world must act decisively, not only to ease human suffering but also to stop those who empower tyranny.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From this analysis, several urgent actions are evident:<br>\u2022 <strong>Fully fund humanitarian aid<\/strong> and ensure safe, unhindered access across conflict lines to save lives now.<br>\u2022 <strong>Enforce a genuine arms and aviation-fuel embargo<\/strong>, and strengthen targeted sanctions to halt attacks on civilians.<br>\u2022 <strong>Impose secondary sanctions<\/strong> on foreign enablers supplying weapons, drones, finance, or technology to the junta\u2014particularly those linked to Chinese and Russian state or commercial networks.<br>\u2022 <strong>Sever the junta\u2019s rare-earth and energy lifelines<\/strong> by blocking purchases and escrowing payments from extractive and cross-border energy projects that provide it with hard currency.<br>\u2022 <strong>Ban lobbying and PR for the junta<\/strong> in democratic countries, and penalize firms that whitewash its crimes or facilitate international legitimacy.<br>\u2022 <strong>Reject sham elections<\/strong> and coordinate diplomatic efforts to deny recognition until there are credible protections for civilians and genuine conditions for dialogue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Joshua Kurlantzick of the Council on Foreign Relations notes, <em>\u201cMyanmar\u2019s junta forces are gaining back ground, presaging a long-term quagmire.\u201d<\/em> Despite years of resistance, the regime\u2019s gradual resurgence and the international community\u2019s divided stance threaten to prolong suffering indefinitely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the years since the Myanmar military&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfr.org\/blog\/google.com\/search?q=myanmar+coup+2021&amp;sca_esv=b417296af091910f&amp;ei=x2XpaL_yIvig5NoPmL_PoAg&amp;ved=0ahUKEwj_8aHqtZqQAxV4EFkFHZjfE4QQ4dUDCBA&amp;uact=5&amp;oq=myanmar+coup+2021&amp;gs_lp=Egxnd3Mtd2l6LXNlcnAiEW15YW5tYXIgY291cCAyMDIxMgUQABiABDIFEAAYgAQyBhAAGBYYHjIGEAAYFhgeMgYQABgWGB4yBhAAGBYYHjIGEAAYFhgeMgkQABgWGMcDGB4yCBAAGBYYChgeMgYQABgWGB5IiRpQAFjkGHABeAGQAQCYAf0BoAHrDqoBBjEyLjQuMrgBA8gBAPgBAZgCE6AC3hDCAgsQABiABBiRAhiKBcICCxAuGIAEGLEDGIMBwgILEAAYgAQYsQMYgwHCAg4QABiABBixAxiDARiKBcICCxAuGIAEGNEDGMcBwgIIEAAYgAQYsQPCAgoQABiABBhDGIoFwgINEAAYgAQYsQMYQxiKBcICFhAuGIAEGLEDGNEDGEMYgwEYxwEYigXCAg0QLhiABBjRAxjHARgKwgIYEC4YgAQYsQMY0QMYQxiDARjHARiKBRgKwgIQEC4YgAQYsQMYQxiDARiKBcICBxAAGIAEGArCAgsQLhiABBjHARivAcICCBAuGIAEGLEDwgIIEAAYgAQYxwOYAwCSBwU5LjguMqAHjIYBsgcFOC44LjK4B9QQwgcGMi0zLjE2yAfCAQ&amp;sclient=gws-wiz-serp\">launched a coup<\/a>&nbsp;in February 2021, the junta clearly expected to quickly crush all opposition. At least at first, it had superior resources and did not face a unified coalition counterforce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet the regime\u2019s forces had until recently consistently&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/global-development\/2025\/jan\/31\/myanmar-military-coup-anniversary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lost<\/a>&nbsp;ground, economic resources, and hearts and minds to the loose coalition of opposition forces. Junta forces, which rely on conscription of young men, have been&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lowyinstitute.org\/the-interpreter\/myanmar-s-failed-junta-turns-four\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">beaten<\/a>&nbsp;by guerilla forces but they also have lost open, pitched battles, and have suffered massive defections among both low-ranking soldiers and some officers.
