In every religion, the moral responsibility of those who lead the faithful is immense. Whether they are monks, ulama, priests, rabbis, or pundits \u2014 their sincerity and purity determine the moral health of society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The following reflection reminds us that the greatest danger to any faith comes not from outside enemies, but from hypocrisy within<\/strong>. When spiritual authority is used for ego, wealth, or power, the sacred flame of truth becomes the very fire that consumes its pretenders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This interfaith commentary draws upon Buddhist, Islamic, Christian, Jewish, and Hindu scriptures \u2014 showing that the warning is universal: those who misuse religion shall face the earliest and fiercest judgment.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let us therefore renew our devotion to honesty, compassion, and self-discipline \u2014 the timeless virtues shared by all faiths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(Parallel Warnings Across Religions)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Buddhist Teaching \u2013 The Pyittas of Gijjhakuta Hill<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Once, while the Buddha was residing in Veluvana Monastery<\/strong> near Rajagaha, the Venerable Moggallana<\/strong> and Lakkhana<\/strong> were spending the rains retreat on Gijjhakuta Hill<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As Moggallana descended the hill one morning, he smiled.
Lakkhana asked, \u201cVenerable Sir, what makes you smile?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moggallana replied, \u201cNot now \u2014 please ask me before the Blessed One.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Later, after their alms round, they approached the Buddha and repeated the question.
The Buddha said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMoggallana saw, with divine vision, monks, nuns, novices, and female disciples who had become \u2018Rahan Pyittas\u2019<\/strong> (ghostly spirits) \u2014 their robes, alms bowls, and very bodies burning with fierce flames, crying out in pain.
They were once corrupt monks and nuns under the Kassapa Buddha\u2019s dispensation<\/strong>, who lived off the holy religion but lacked virtue.
After enduring countless years in hell, they still carry the remnants of that karma.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Buddha concluded:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cJust as worms live in sweet honey and die from it,
even so, those who live off the Holy Dhamma without purity
are consumed by the fire of their own unwholesomeness.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Islamic Parable \u2013 \u201cThe Fire Shall Begin with the Scholars\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In Islam, a similar warning appears in authentic Hadith:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOn the Day of Judgment, the fire of Hell will be kindled first with three types of people: a scholar who did not act upon his knowledge, a wealthy man who gave charity for show, and a martyr who fought for fame.\u201d<\/strong>
(Sahih Muslim, Book of Imara, Hadith 1905)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And in another Hadith, Prophet Muhammad \ufdfa said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe most severely punished on the Day of Judgment will be the hypocritical scholars.\u201d
(al-Darimi, al-Muqaddimah, 1\/98)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thus, just as in Buddhism, those who misuse religion for status or wealth<\/strong> will face the earliest and fiercest fire \u2014 not common sinners, but the self-proclaimed pious who deceived others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Christianity \u2013 \u201cWoe unto You, Hypocrites\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Jesus Christ (Peace be upon him) gave repeated warnings against religious hypocrisy:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWoe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!
For you are like whitewashed tombs \u2014 beautiful outwardly but full of dead men\u2019s bones inside.\u201d
(Matthew 23:27)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And again:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNot everyone who says to me, \u2018Lord, Lord,\u2019 shall enter the Kingdom of Heaven, but only those who do the will of my Father.\u201d
(Matthew 7:21)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thus, the Bible too warns that those who use religion for show and control<\/strong> rather than humility and service will face divine rejection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Judaism \u2013 \u201cThe Fire Shall Burn in Zion\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In the Jewish Talmud and prophetic literature, false priests and corrupt teachers are condemned:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHer priests have profaned the sanctuary; her prophets have done violence to the law.\u201d
(Zephaniah 3:4)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rabbis taught that the destruction of the First Temple came because \u201cthe priests taught for a price and the prophets divined for money.\u201d (Micah 3:11)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hence, misuse of sacred duty is seen as the root of communal downfall<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hinduism \u2013 Karma and Misuse of Dharma<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Hindu scriptures also caution spiritual pretenders.
In the Bhagavad Gita (16:17\u201318)<\/strong>, Lord Krishna describes hypocritical ascetics:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSelf-conceited, stubborn, filled with pride of wealth and learning,
they perform sacrifices for ostentation and not according to scriptural rule.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And in the Manusmriti (4:195)<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe who wears the guise of holiness while pursuing sense pleasures
goes to the lowest hell.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The principle is clear: the more sacred the duty, the greater the fall if abused.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Universal Message<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Across all great faiths \u2014 Buddhism, Islam, Christianity, Judaism, and Hinduism<\/strong> \u2014 one truth resounds:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fire of moral decay begins not among the ignorant, but among the unworthy guardians of truth.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

When spiritual leaders lose sincerity, the light of faith turns into a flame of destruction<\/strong>, burning first those who misused it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

May we learn from these timeless warnings \u2014
to keep our hearts pure, our service humble, and our faith sincere.
For the sacred robe, the holy title, or the outward ritual cannot save those
