The generals want to divide the people along religious and racial lines so that they can continue ruling over the ruins. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The antidote to this poison is solidarity. Muslims, Buddhists, Christians, Hindus\u2014and all who dream of a free and democratic Myanmar\u2014must see clearly that hatred is the junta\u2019s weapon, and unity is the people\u2019s shield. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>To defend democracy, every citizen must reject Wirathu\u2019s lies, resist the trap of sectarian division, and stand shoulder to shoulder for a future where no group is scapegoated and the military can no longer rule through fear.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>By MMNN Desk | September 23, 2025<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just weeks before Myanmar\u2019s long-delayed elections, ultranationalist monk U Wirathu has resurfaced on the political stage. Once again, he is playing the role the military has so often scripted for him: stoking communal hatred to destabilize democracy. This time, his rhetoric is aimed not only at Muslims but also at the NLD and the NUG.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Two-Part Hate Speech<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>On September 21, 2025, U Wirathu delivered a speech laced with disinformation and inflammatory attacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Part I: Twisting History and Demonizing Daw Suu<\/strong><br>He began by pointing to a September 20 rally in London against non-white, non-Christian immigrants, which he falsely described as an \u201canti-Muslim protest.\u201d Using this as a springboard, he launched into accusations:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Claiming that \u201cBengalis\u201d were once invited into the country by <em>General Aung San\u2019s wife, Daw Khin Kyi<\/em> (whom he slandered as a \u201cNational Traitor\u201d), and that they were even given a Rohingya voice in <em>The Voice of Burma<\/em> radio and the national encyclopedia.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Branding Daw Aung San Suu Kyi as the \u201cdaughter of the National Traitor\u201d and accusing her of conspiring with the OIC to \u201cIslamize Myanmar\u201d by dismantling MaBaTha and undermining the Tatmadaw.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>He declared:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMaBaTha was easy to dismantle because it had no weapons. But destroying the armed military was the NLD government\u2019s real mission. By breaking MaBaTha, Muslims gained leverage; by weakening the Tatmadaw, they could seize the country. That is why MaBaTha and the military became the biggest obstacles to Islamist Muslims.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Part II: Targeting the NUG and OIC<\/strong><br>U Wirathu then turned his fire on the NUG:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>He alleged that the NUG had signed agreements with the OIC promising to recognize the Rohingya as an official ethnic group if it came to power.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>He claimed some NUG ministers plotted with the OIC to prosecute Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>He attacked the NUG\u2019s reliance on the OIC, alleging that Western aid dried up under Trump and Europe, leaving the NUG \u201corphans\u201d who turned to Islamic organizations for funds.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>He ended with a warning:<\/em><\/strong> <strong><em>\u201cNUG people\u2014don\u2019t bring misery to our country.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why It Matters<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>U Wirathu\u2019s speech is more than fringe rhetoric. It reflects the military\u2019s long-standing strategy: weaponizing religious hatred to divide society, weaken pro-democracy forces, and present itself as the defender of Buddhism and the nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the armed forces orchestrate these campaigns, they persist partly because of the silence\u2014or even quiet endorsement\u2014of many political parties, civil society leaders, and democracy groups. Such negligence has allowed extremist narratives to gain traction among the uninformed public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Real Target: Democracy<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>By reactivating Wirathu and MaBaTha, the junta is reviving a familiar pattern: scapegoating Muslims as a tool to fracture democratic unity. In every country where state-directed racial violence occurs, the weakest and least protected minorities\u2014in Myanmar, the Muslims\u2014become the first victims. But genocide never happens without state involvement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If Myanmar\u2019s people and political leaders dismiss Muslim suffering as \u201cnot our concern,\u201d they overlook the military\u2019s real intent: the destruction of democracy itself. In the long run, it will not only be the Muslims but all of Myanmar\u2019s society that bears the pain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Call to Unity<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Myanmar today stands at a crossroads.
