{"id":2581,"date":"2025-09-08T12:24:38","date_gmt":"2025-09-08T12:24:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/myanmarmuslim.news\/en\/?p=2581"},"modified":"2025-09-08T12:24:43","modified_gmt":"2025-09-08T12:24:43","slug":"healthcare-crisis-hitting-all-income-groups","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/myanmarmuslim.news\/en\/2025\/09\/08\/healthcare-crisis-hitting-all-income-groups\/","title":{"rendered":"Healthcare crisis hitting all income groups"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>By\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com.my\/authors?q=DIYANA+PFORDTEN\">DIYANA PFORDTEN<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com.my\/authors?q=FAZLEENA+AZIZ\">FAZLEENA AZIZ<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PETALING JAYA: It is a big red flag if people in the country\u2019s top income group \u2013 the T20 \u2013 are starting to use public hospitals because private insurance is just too expensive, says the Federation of Malaysian Consumers Associations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The federation\u2019s senior manager Saral James Maniam said this is an indication how healthcare costs are getting out of hand, as not just the lower income folks are feeling the pressure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ALSO READ:<\/strong>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com.my\/news\/nation\/2025\/09\/08\/going-public-with-healthcare\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Going public with healthcare<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Health Minister, Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad, mentioned targeted subsidies, which could help, but it\u2019s not a complete fix.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe need more than that \u2013 like better regulation of insurance prices, clearer billing and more focus on preventive care so people don\u2019t end up with huge medical bills later on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPublic hospitals are already stretched thin and if more people from the T20 group start going there, it could make things worse unless we increase capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHowever, the government has to also make sure that cost-saving doesn\u2019t mean cutting corners on quality or access,\u201d Saral said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She added that healthcare shouldn\u2019t be something only the wealthy could afford but instead it should be fair, efficient and work for everyone \u2013 whether you\u2019re rich or struggling to get by.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Saral said this in response to Dr Dzulkefly stating that rising insurance premiums could be one of the reasons why even those in the T20 bracket are increasingly seeking treatment at public hospitals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said that the issue warrants closer study, particularly in the context of targeted subsidies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consumers\u2019 Association of Penang president Mohideen Abdul Kader said the sharp rise in health insurance premiums in Malaysia is threatening to push ordinary families out of the private healthcare system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He noted that medical inflation in Malaysia has been among the highest in Asia, with insurance costs rising faster than wage growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor families struggling to cope, the escalating premiums may force them to terminate their policies altogether,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The impact of this shift could be felt across the public healthcare system if more middle- and high-income families turn to government hospitals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Health Ministry must strategise affordable options.
