He wrote extensively on freedom, democracy, and human rights. Back in 2012, he even warned that Myanmar risked global disgrace if it failed to address state-orchestrated violence against the Rohingya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet today, as Rohingya continue to face systematic atrocities, the NUG seems reluctant to speak clearly. This raises a painful question: <em>is the NUG willing to risk its international credibility by ignoring genocide?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">War vs. Genocide<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Some people confuse civil war with genocide. They argue that Myanmar is simply facing a civil war, where all ethnic groups \u2014 Karen, Kachin, Chin, Rakhine, and even Bamar \u2014 are suffering and dying. They ask: <em>If everyone is dying, what makes the Rohingya case different?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just yesterday, I spoke with a respected 88-Generation leader, now in his 60s. He told me:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>           <strong><em>\u201cSince everyone is dying, we should first win democracy. Once democracy is secured, then we can  <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>          <strong><em>   discuss the Rohingya issue.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This logic may sound appealing, but it fails to capture what genocide is. In civil wars, civilians die, but the killings are not targeted at people <em>because of their identity<\/em>. Collateral damage and excesses occur, and they are often labeled as \u201cisolated cases.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But in the case of the Rohingya, successive governments \u2014 military, civilian, and even now under the Rakhine armed forces \u2014 have carried out systematic campaigns: targeted killings, mass rapes, arson, expulsion, confiscation of property, and destruction of livelihoods. All these were done <strong>because they are Rohingya<\/strong>. That is what makes it genocide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Key Question<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>So let me ask plainly:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Has the government, or any armed group, in Myanmar carried out systematic massacres of Karen <em>because they are Karen<\/em>?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have Shan been uprooted and their businesses destroyed <em>because they are Shan<\/em>?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have Bamar been expelled or killed <em>because they are Bamar<\/em>?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The answer is <strong>no<\/strong>. That is why these tragedies are not genocide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the Rohingya, targeted precisely for their identity, have faced carefully planned, long-term crimes designed to erase them as a people. That is genocide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Silence of NUG<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If NUG leaders suggest the Rohingya issue can wait \u201cuntil democracy is achieved,\u201d then I ask: <strong>by that time, will any Rohingya be left?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The international community \u2014 including the United Nations \u2014 has repeatedly condemned the Arakan Army and the Myanmar military for continuing genocide against the Rohingya. There is evidence, reports, and witness testimony. Only those who want to look away can pretend not to know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So is the NUG deliberately ignoring genocide? Is it shielding the crimes of the Rakhine armed groups, just as past governments shielded the military?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ko Nay Phone Latt, you once warned in 2012 that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf this continues\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Large numbers of Myanmar citizens will perish.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Myanmar\u2019s dignity in the world will collapse.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Whatever we do, we must ask: are our actions pushing the country into danger, or protecting it? And we must take responsibility for everything we write and say.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>These were your own words.
