Malaysia, the current chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), is hosting a special meeting on Myanmar issue, in Kuala Lumpur from August 4-7, bringing together representatives from Myanmar\u2019s opposition forces, including the National Unity Government (NUG), the National Unity Consultative Council (NUCC), the Committee Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (CRPH), and some 30 other anti-regime groups including ethnic armed organizations such as the Karen National Union, Karenni National Progressive Party and Chin National Front.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ASEAN\u2019s envoy on Myanmar will discuss the potential for a ceasefire, delivery of humanitarian aid and the perspectives of Myanmar\u2019s opposition forces on the junta\u2019s proposed elections slated for December.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although the National League for Democracy (NLD) was invited, it could not attend due to travel restrictions. Instead, the NLD released a statement on August 3 calling for the release of all political prisoners\u2014including Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and President U Win Myint\u2014and urging ASEAN not to recognize the junta\u2019s planned election. The NLD also urged the ASEAN to pressure the regime to end its indiscriminate air campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CRPH member U Si Thu Maung clarified that the military junta is not participating in the meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
