It is a profound declaration of dignity.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A powerful example comes from <strong>U Kulah\u2019s royal chronicle<\/strong> during the Pagan era, where a monk courageously rebuked an unjust king who had seized power through betrayal. With a piercing admonition, the monk thundered:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cYou, wicked and defiled ruler!<br>You fear not the karmic retribution that awaits those who commit evil in samsara.<br>Do you believe your body shall be forever young and immune from death, just because you sit on a throne?<br>There has never been a more disgraceful ruler than you.<br><strong>I shall no longer live under a wicked king.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>With that, he turned his back and departed to the distant land of <strong>Sri Lanka (S\u012bha\u1e37a)<\/strong>, choosing truth over comfort, exile over complicity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This same spirit echoes in today\u2019s Myanmar. <em>Countless individuals\u2014silent while still under the grip of oppression\u2014have later walked away from the shadows of military rule, not out of cowardice, but out of moral survival.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like many others, I too never dared speak a word while still inside. But those who truly knew me understood the reason I left: the Ne Win regime\u2019s systemic <strong>racial and religious discrimination<\/strong>. That was the final line I could not cross.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a moral world, <strong><em>exile is not surrender\u2014it is resistance. Choosing to leave a homeland polluted by injustice can be more honorable than remaining silent under tyranny.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>When the Nation Becomes the Danger<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>An ancient Buddhist ethical verse offers this timeless warning:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cOne must flee the danger of a horned beast from fifty paces,<br>The danger of a horse from a hundred,<br>The danger of an elephant from a thousand,<br>But the danger of the wicked\u2014one must flee the entire land.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The didactic rhythm of the original Lokan\u012bti verse and makes the moral lesson clear: <strong>the greater the threat, the greater the distance\u2014and with truly wicked people i.e. Military Junta and AA, only total departure will do<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Dilemma of the Displaced<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To migrate is never easy. It means leaving behind familiar soil, language, ancestry, and sometimes even identity. But for the oppressed, it can be an act of spiritual survival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the <strong>moral paradox of Myanmar\u2019s exiles<\/strong>: the very people who leave are often the ones who loved their country the most\u2014but who refuse to see it poisoned by racism, religious bigotry, or militarized brutality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some who left were once celebrated students\u2014Outstanding Students (Lu Ye Chuns). Some were monks, poets, doctors, or simply farmers. But all shared a silent decision: <em>they would not live under a wicked king.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Closing Thought<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Let us not mock or forget those who left. Many had no choice. Many saw what others refused to see.
