In a recent viral Facebook post, Myanmar public commentator <strong>Kaung Kin Ko<\/strong> highlighted the contrasting approaches of <strong>Myanmar<\/strong> and <strong>Thailand<\/strong> toward migrants\u2014particularly those from Myanmar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His reflections, which echo the lived experience of millions of Burmese migrant workers in Thailand, are both sobering and eye-opening for anyone concerned with justice, development, and dignity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Thailand: Embracing Migrants as Contributors<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite some bureaucratic flaws and occasional social discrimination, <strong>Thailand has shown a level of inclusiveness and pragmatism<\/strong> that contrasts sharply with Myanmar\u2019s harsh citizenship policies:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Children born in Thailand\u2014even if their parents entered illegally\u2014often get access to Thai public schools<\/strong>, where they are provided with free or subsidized education and even milk nutrition programs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Kaung Kin Ko notes that even children <strong>born outside of Thailand have pathways to legal residency and citizenship<\/strong>, something <strong>unthinkable under Myanmar\u2019s 1982 Citizenship Law<\/strong>, which has been used to systematically exclude ethnic minorities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Moreover, Thailand recognizes the <strong>economic contributions of Burmese laborers<\/strong>, many of whom form the backbone of its construction, hospitality, agriculture, and domestic work sectors. This <strong>&#8220;win-win&#8221; model<\/strong> sees migrants not as parasites, but as partners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Myanmar: Where Being Born Isn&#8217;t Enough<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In stark contrast, <strong>Myanmar\u2019s citizenship law weaponizes ethnicity and ancestry<\/strong>. Kaung Kin Ko writes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;Even those born and raised in Myanmar, with generations of ancestry in the country, struggle to gain citizenship if they\u2019re not seen as ethnically pure or can&#8217;t afford bribes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Under Myanmar\u2019s <strong>infamous 1982 Citizenship Law<\/strong>, the burden of proof is disproportionately placed on minorities, especially Muslims, who are often branded as &#8220;foreigners&#8221; despite having deep historical roots in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He adds:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cEven if you\u2019re born in Myanmar, unless you\u2019re of the right blood and pay the right people, you\u2019re not a citizen. You\u2019re vulnerable to arbitrary arrest, detention, and denial of rights.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>This policy, rooted in <strong>Burman Buddhist nationalism (\u1019\u1018\u101e)<\/strong>, fosters systemic discrimination and leaves entire communities in limbo, stateless within the very country they built.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The American Paradox: A Nation of Migrants Led by Anti-Migrant Politics<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If Thailand offers a pragmatic model and Myanmar a tragic one, the United States\u2014particularly under former President <strong>Donald Trump<\/strong>\u2014presents a paradox.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The U.S. is <strong>a nation built by migrants<\/strong>, from Irish railroad workers to Jewish refugees, Latin American laborers to African slaves. Yet Trump\u2019s presidency was marked by calls to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Build a wall against Mexican migrants<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ban Muslims from entry<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Strip children of undocumented migrants of protections (DACA)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And most recently, threaten to <strong>deport Elon Musk<\/strong>, a South African-born U.S. citizen and the world\u2019s richest man.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Imagine: If <strong>even Musk isn\u2019t safe<\/strong>, what hope is there for poor, voiceless immigrants?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump\u2019s anti-immigrant agenda starkly contrasts with the U.S.\u2019s founding ideals\u2014<strong>\u201cGive me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.\u201d<\/strong> Instead, migrants are now branded as threats, burdens, or enemies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Migration Is Not a Crime\u2014It\u2019s a Contribution<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Kaung Kin Ko wisely observes that no society is perfect. Yes, <strong>Thailand has discrimination<\/strong>, but it&#8217;s often <strong>class-based<\/strong>, not always rooted in ethnicity or race. He explains how Burmese migrants, even undocumented ones, <strong>are treated with more dignity<\/strong> in Thailand than many minorities in their own homeland of Myanmar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cIn Myanmar, it\u2019s about blood. In Thailand, at least it\u2019s about conduct. If you behave, contribute, and live peacefully\u2014you\u2019re treated like a human.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>He calls out <strong>Myanmar&#8217;s ongoing dehumanization of ethnic minorities<\/strong>, contrasting it with the relative openness and Buddhist-inspired compassion of Thailand\u2014<strong>&#8220;The Land of Smiles&#8221;<\/strong>, as it\u2019s globally known.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Conclusion: Lessons for Myanmar and the World<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Thailand<\/strong>, for all its imperfections, shows that treating migrants with dignity helps both the host and the migrant\u2014economically and socially.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Myanmar<\/strong> must learn that denying citizenship to those born within its borders weakens the nation, breeds hatred, and fuels unrest.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>America<\/strong> must remember that its greatness was built not in spite of migrants, but because of them. Deporting those who disagree with the president undermines both democracy and humanity.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>As Kaung Kin Ko warns, <strong>\u201cNo majority owns any minority. R. Narayanan, was born in Burma and earned her first degree at RASU.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Datin Seri Tiara Jacquelina, a well-known Malaysian actress, is the granddaughter of Datuk Eddie Eu Eng Hock, a Burmese Chinese entrepreneur.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Burmese migrants pioneered Jawi, Chinese, and Tamil newspaper publishing in Malaya.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The mother of Malaysia\u2019s founding Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman was of Burmese Shan origin.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Some Arab-Burmese families migrated back to the Middle East and rose to political prominence.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Burmese migrant families owned hotels and karaoke venues in Malaysia.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In Cambodia, descendants of Burmese who migrated during Burmese royal times were acknowledged during official state visits.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A 100+ year-old Burmese Hindu temple in Terengganu stands as testament to early Burmese Indian railway workers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Many ordinary Malaysians today recall having Burmese ancestry in their family.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Even members of Burma\u2019s royal lineage like June Rose Bellamy (Yadana Nat Mai) became global figures.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These stories\u2014and countless untold ones\u2014highlight how migrant communities not only survive, but enrich their host nations.
