Within days, Bangladesh complied by recalling its ambassador and senior defense attach\u00e9\u2014an unusual but telling gesture reflecting Bangladesh\u2019s willingness to defuse tensions diplomatically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet this swift escalation invites a fundamental question: <strong>Why is the Myanmar junta quick to protest and penalize Bangladesh for alleged contact with an ethnic armed group, while turning a blind eye\u2014or even quietly cooperating\u2014when it comes to China\u2019s longstanding and well-documented engagements with other ethnic armed organizations within Myanmar\u2019s borders?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The China Exception<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite SAC&#8217;s outcry over Bangladesh, there is ample circumstantial evidence and credible international reporting suggesting that the People\u2019s Republic of China has maintained <strong>extensive communication<\/strong>, <strong>negotiations<\/strong>, and even <strong>material support<\/strong> with a range of Ethnic Armed Organizations (EAOs), including those in northern Shan and Kachin states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>China\u2019s Strategic Relations with EAOs<\/strong>: Over the years, China has positioned itself as both a broker and a stakeholder in Myanmar&#8217;s internal conflicts. It has directly facilitated ceasefire talks and has supplied infrastructure, aid, and\u2014according to some reports\u2014military hardware to select EAOs, including groups in the Northern Alliance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Dual Strategy<\/strong>: This strategy serves Beijing\u2019s interests in stabilizing its border regions while maintaining leverage over both the junta and EAOs. Yet, SAC has never formally protested this involvement. On the contrary, it continues to cultivate ties with Beijing\u2014most visibly through economic dependencies such as the China-Myanmar Economic Corridor and the Kyaukpyu deep-sea port.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>No Diplomatic Recalls<\/strong>: There has never been a demand for Chinese diplomats to leave Naypyidaw nor any accusations of &#8220;diplomatic breaches&#8221; lodged publicly against Beijing, despite the transparency of its engagement with armed groups in border areas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Unequal Responses Reflect Power Imbalances<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This contrast reflects more than mere diplomatic oversight. It highlights a dangerous <strong>double standard<\/strong> rooted in geopolitical asymmetry and the SAC\u2019s selective use of diplomatic norms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bangladesh, a democratic neighbor that has long borne the humanitarian burden of Myanmar\u2019s crisis\u2014most notably by hosting over a million Rohingya refugees\u2014has often taken a cautious and respectful approach to its bilateral relations. Despite this, it now faces formal censure over unverified or informal contacts with a single ethnic group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In contrast, China, with its vast economic influence, continues to enjoy immunity from scrutiny\u2014even as its regional ambitions intersect directly with Myanmar&#8217;s sovereignty and internal conflicts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Larger Implications<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The SAC\u2019s disproportionate reaction to Bangladesh raises several troubling concerns:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Instrumental Use of Diplomacy<\/strong>: Rather than applying principles consistently, SAC appears to weaponize diplomatic norms when convenient\u2014targeting weaker or cooperative states while appeasing powerful patrons.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Suppression of Accountability<\/strong>: The junta\u2019s protest against Dhaka may be more about distracting domestic or international scrutiny than genuine concern for sovereignty. Especially when China\u2019s deeper and wider engagement is tolerated, if not welcomed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Risk to Regional Stability<\/strong>: This approach risks alienating moderate regional partners like Bangladesh, while emboldening more dominant powers whose long-term strategic goals may not align with Myanmar\u2019s national interest or sovereignty.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Call for Consistency and Accountability<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If the SAC regime claims to defend Myanmar\u2019s sovereignty and diplomatic standards, it must apply these principles universally\u2014regardless of the economic or political stature of the other party.
