It’s hard— To own the gas reserves by name, Yet ration candles in the dark.
It’s hard— To seal the doors against return Of human wealth, half-spent and gone.
It’s hard— To lose untouched money To inflation’s silent theft.
It’s hard— To wrap chili in old newsprint Where noble mottos lie unused, Crinkled, forgotten, mocked.
It’s hard— To boast of ‘cow-hoof’ bowls And not know shame.
It’s hard— To guard old ways with solemn pride, Though work bears no reward inside, While wisdom sleeps, untouched, astray— Just locked in silence, tucked away.
It’s hard— To pass the leaking cup With trembling hands, Still offering hope.
It’s hard— In this high-speed, roaring age, Where all race on, mile by stage, To see the “good” obstruct the way, Like tigers stalking helpless prey. They snare, they stall, with cunning flair— And ransom echoes everywhere.
It’s hard— When lonely logs, once still and proud, Now gather not to stand unbowed, But lift their robes in spiteful show, To mock, to strike, to deal a blow.
It’s hard— To stretch one generous hand While the other signs A new decree for power.
