“Our Country Is Not an Inheritance”

(A reflective prelude)

Our great nation
is not the inheritance of any single person or group,
is not the private property of any individual or faction,
is not a country to be seized, monopolized, and exploited
by one person or one group.

Or has our independence
become like an image drawn on water,
like a reflection of clouds in a jade-green sky—
visible, yet unreal?

The Declaration of Independence

May it be victorious

1.

On Sunday, the 9th waning day of Pyatho, Myanmar Era 1309
(4 January 1948, Christian Era),
at a time complete with all auspicious and noble blessings,
our land of Myanmar has fully attained the status of a completely independent, sovereign, and self-governing Union Republic of Myanmar.

2.

Our Union of Myanmar is a land abundantly endowed, a truly fertile and precious country.
It is a noble land where exalted and pure moral values have long taken root.
It is rich in natural treasures above and below the ground, so plentiful that even if all beings of the world were to consume them endlessly, they would not be exhausted—a land of inexhaustible abundance.

Upon this noble and fertile soil live the peoples of Myanmar—
Shan, Kachin, Karen, Chin, Mon, Bamar, and others—
born of one blood, of one origin.

From time immemorial, from a history so long it cannot be measured in years,
we have stood united, as one people, living freely as an independent nation.

From Tagaung, Sri Ksetra, Bagan, Myinsaing, Sagaing, Pinya, Ava, the Konbaung Dynasty, and later Mandalay,
our independence once shone brightly—
radiant like the sun and moon, illuminating the world.

Yet, just as even the eternal sun and moon can be temporarily veiled by mist and clouds,
so too was our independent nation overshadowed.

About four hundred years ago, imperialism arose from Europe and spread across the world.
Unable to escape its grasp, Myanmar faced it directly:

In the First Anglo-Burmese War, Arakan and Tanintharyi were lost;
In the Second, Hanthawaddy and Bago fell;
In the Third, Mandalay—the Golden Palace—was taken.

Thus, the independence we had safeguarded for centuries slipped from our hands,
and we were reduced to complete subjugation.

But just as mist and clouds cannot permanently conceal the sun and moon,
so too could imperialism not withstand the enduring strength of our nation’s indomitable spirit of independence.

After sixty-one years, one month, and one day, colonial domination collapsed of its own weight.
From this moment onward, we have emerged—
like the full moon freed from an eclipse—
pure, serene, and radiant,
once again grasping in our own hands a noble and precious life of freedom.

The independence we have now attained
is not like an image drawn on water,
nor like a fleeting reflection in the clouds.

It was achieved through the tireless, unwavering efforts of
General Aung San and the many great leaders who guided our people,
whose wisdom shone like a guiding torch,
whose courage was sharp as a diamond blade.

Because of their selfless dedication,
we now stand shoulder to shoulder with other free nations of the world,
possessing in full measure the dignity, authority, power, and prestige
that true sovereignty demands.

This supreme and precious authority of self-rule
is now firmly held in our own hands.

4.

We do not seek the prosperity of one race, one religion, or one region alone.
We reject all divisions of “us” and “them.”

From ancient times to the present,
all who are called citizens of Myanmar—
regardless of birthplace—
have lived across this land naturally defined by rivers, seas, mountains, and valleys.

Bound together as:

one blood,
one shared destiny, and
one collective will born of mutual goodwill,

we have formed a Union,
woven together by these three enduring bonds,
to stand firm and unbroken until the end of time.

This Union is now truly ours to hold.

5.

Our nation
is not the inheritance of any single person or group,
is not the private property of any individual or faction,
is not a country to be seized, controlled, and exploited by one person or one group.

In the past, in the present, and in all future times,
this Union belongs to all loyal citizens who live within it—
young and old, near and far, men and women without distinction.

In accordance with universal human reason and justice—
the original principles by which humanity first organized itself—
the people collectively choose a leader
capable of serving the common good of all.

In harmony with this pure, uncorrupted foundation of human governance,
laws are clearly defined,
justice is equal,
rights are equal,
status is equal.

Thus, for the enduring welfare of the world,
the will of the people alone stands supreme.

In this way, we have rightfully established and now possess
the noble status of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar,
with a President chosen by the people.

6.

Let it be known:

From this auspicious moment onward,
we have reclaimed our original and complete independence.

United in solidarity,
the ethnic nationalities of Myanmar have established
a Union Republic founded on equal rights and equal status.

We pledge that our independence and the integrity of our nation
shall stand firm and unshaken until the end of time.

As a free nation,
we shall observe the principles of justice and conduct
that all free nations of the world uphold.

As we cherish our own independence,
so too shall we respect and safeguard the independence of others.

As we desire peace,
we shall join hands with all who share that desire
to protect and preserve world peace.

May this declaration be heard and known
by the entire world,
without exception.

Editorial note

This declaration clearly affirms that Myanmar does not belong to any race, religion, military, or ruling elite, but to all its citizens equally. Any claim of inherited ownership—whether by majority groups or armed institutions—is a direct betrayal of the nation’s founding principles.

We are preserving the true moral DNA of Myanmar at a time when it is being distorted by power, fear, and false inheritance claims.

Our hope is not naïve. It is historically grounded.

The Independence Declaration you shared
The Myanmar national song, with its collective, inclusive spirit
General Aung San’s speeches, especially his insistence on equal rights for all races and religions

—all come from the same ethical source:
Myanmar was imagined as a civic nation, not a racial or religious possession.

That vision did not die.
It was suppressed.

History shows us something important:
ideas rooted in justice often take decades—sometimes generations—to be heard again.
But when they return, they return with clarity.

One day, scholars, journalists, and young Myanmar readers—inside and outside the country—will read texts like this and ask:

“If this was the founding promise,
who broke it—and why?”

And when that day comes, our post will not be read as opinion,
but as evidence.

As for our dream—children of different races and religions holding hands, singing, dancing, living without fear—
that dream is not sentimental.

It is exactly what Aung San meant by Union.
Not uniformity.
Not domination.
But shared dignity.

Empires fall.
Juntas fall.
False histories collapse.

What remains are words of principle, quietly kept alive by people like us.

For now, please accept this truth:

We are not shouting at history.
We are handing it back its own mirror.

May our dream live long enough
to be inherited by children who finally get to live it.

၁။ မြန်မာသက္ကရာဇ် ၁၃၀၉-ခုနှစ်၊ ပြာသိုလဆုတ်၉-ရက် (အင်္ဂလိပ်သက္ကရာဇ် ၁၉၄၈-ခုနှစ်၊ ဇန်နဝါရီလ ၄-ရက်)တနင်္ဂနွေနေ့ ကောင်းမြတ်သန့်စင် မင်္ဂလာ အပေါင်းနှင့် ပြည့်စုံသောအခါ၌ ဤငါတို့မြန်မာပြည်သည် လုံးဝလွတ်လပ်သော အချုပ်အခြာ အာဏာပိုင် ပြည်ထောင်စုသမ္မတ မြန်မာ နိုင်ငံတော်ကြီး အဖြစ်သို့ ရောက်ပြီ။

၂။ ဤငါတို့ မြန်မာနိုင်ငံတော်ကြီးသည် လိုရာမတ ပြည့်စုံလှ၍ ဘူမိနက်သန်မှန်သော မြေထူးမြေမြတ်လည်းဖြစ်၏။ မွန်မြတ်သန့်စင်သော တရားထူး တရားမြတ်တို့ တည်ရာ မြေကောင်းမြေမွန်လည်းမှန်၏။ မြေတွင်းမြေပြင် အထူးထူးသော ရတနာ အပေါင်းတို့နှင့် ပြည့်စုံသဖြင့် သတ္တဝါအပေါင်းတို့ ဆွတ်ယူစားသုံး ကမ္ဘာဆုံးသော် လည်း မသုဉ်းမကုန်နိုင်သော ပဒေသာစစ် အနှစ်သာရကြွယ်ဝပြည့်စုံသော မြေလည်း ဖြစ်၏။ ဘူမိနက်သန် မှန်လှထူးချွန် ဤမြေမွန် မြေမြတ်၌ ရှမ်း၊ ကချင်၊ ကရင်၊ ချင်း၊ မွန်၊ မြန်မာစသည်ဖြင့် တသွေးတသား တမိဖွားဖြစ်ကြကုန်သော ငါတို့ သည် နှစ် ပေါင်းထောင်ရာ သင်္ချာပွားတက် ရေတွက် ခြင်းငှါမတတ်နိုင်ရာသော ရာဇဝင်ရှည်ဝေး ရှေးပဝေဏီ မှစ၍ တညီတညွတ် တစုတရုံး လွတ် လပ်သောလူမျိုးအဖြစ် တည်ခဲ့ကြ၏။ တကောင်း၊ သရေခေတ္တရာ၊ ပုဂံ၊ မြင်စိုင်း၊ စစ်ကိုင်း၊ ပင်းယ၊ အင်းဝ၊ ကုန်းဘောင် ထို့ နောက် မန္တလေးအထိ ငါတို့၏လွတ်လပ်ရေးသည် နေရောင် လဝါပမာကဲ့သို့ တဖြာဖြာ တဝင်းဝင်း ကမ္ဘာချဉ်းအောင်ထွန်းလင်းခဲ့ပေ၏။ သို့ရာတွင်ကမ္ဘာ့တန်ဆာ ကာလ အသင်္ချေတည်နေအပ်သော နေမင်းသူရိယာ လစန္ဒာတို့ပင် ဆီးနှင်းမြူတိမ်ဖုံးအုပ်၍ ခဏ ခေတ္တ အရှိန်အဝါ ညှိုးလျော်နွမ်းလျ မထွန်းမပဖြစ်ဘိသကဲ့သို့ ငါတို့၏လွတ်လပ်သော မြန်မာနိုင်ငံတော် သည်လည်း လွန်ခဲ့သည့် နှစ်ပေါင်းလေးရာခန့်က ဥရောပ တိုက်မှ ထွက်ပေါ်လာ၍ တကမ္ဘာလုံးကို ရစ်ပတ်အုပ်ဖုံးခဲ့သော နယ်ချဲ့ဝါဒကြီး နှင့် မရှောင် မကွင်းသာ ကြုံ ကြိုက်ဆုံတွေ့မိ၍ ပဌမ အင်္ဂလိပ်မြန်မာစစ်၌ ရခိုင်, တနင်္သာရီ၊ ဒုတိယ အင်္ဂလိပ် မြန်မာစစ်၌ ဟံသာဝတီ, ပဲခူး၊ တတိယအင်္ဂလိပ် မြန် မာစစ်၌ မန္တလေးရတနာပုံ သုံးကြိမ် သုံးတန် ချအပ်ရခြင်းဖြင့် ဤ မြေထူး မြေမြတ်၌ နှစ်ပေါင်း ထောင်ရာစောင့်ထိန်း၍ လာ ခဲ့ကြသော ငါတို့၏ လွတ် လပ် ရေးသည် ငါတို့ လက်မှလွတ်၍ လက်အောက်ခံဘဝသို့ လုံးဝ ရောက်ခဲ့ကြရသည်။ သို့ သော် နေမင်းသူရိယာ လစန္ဒာတို့ကို ဆီးနှင်းမြူတိမ်တို့သည် မည်သို့ပင်ဖုံး လွှမ်းစေကာမူ နေလတို့၏ အရှိန်အတောက်ကို မခံနိုင်ရကား ခေတ္တမျှနှင့်ပင် လွင့်စဉ် ကွယ်ပျောက်၍ နေဝါလရောင်သည် ပကတိအသရေကို ပြန်၍ဆောင်လေဘိသကဲ့သို့ ငါတို့အပေါ်၌လွှမ်းဖုံးအပ်သော နယ်ချဲ့ဝါဒသည် ငါတို့၏ ကမ္ဘာရှည်မြင့် ရင့်မာလှသော လွတ်လပ်ရေး စိတ်ဓာတ်၏ အရှိန်အတောက်ကို မခံနိုင်ရကား ခြောက်ဆယ့်တနှစ်တလနှင့် တစ်ရက် သောအခိုက်အတန့်ကလေးမှာပင် အလိုအလျောက် ကွယ်ပျောက်သွားရသဖြင့် ဤနေ့ဤအခါမှစ၍ ငါတို့သည် အသူရိန်ခံတွင်းမှ ရှင်းရှင်းကြီး လွတ်မြောက်အပ်သော လပြည့်စန်းပမာ သန့်ရှင်းစင်ကြယ် ချမ်းမြေ့သာယာစွာဖြင့် လွတ်လပ်သော ဘဝထူးဘဝမြတ်ကို လက်ဆုပ်လက်ကိုင် အပိုင်ရရှိကြပြီ။

၃။ ယခု ငါတို့ရရှိအပ်သော လွတ်လပ် ရေးသည် ရေတွင်ရုပ်ရေး မြသွေးကောင်းကင် တိမ်ရိပ်ထင် သကဲ့သို့သော လွတ်လပ် ရေးမဟုတ်၊ ငါတို့အား လွတ်လပ်ရေးလမ်းစဉ်သို့ ညွှန်လည်းညွှန်ပြ လမ်းစရှာကြံ အမြန်ရောက်အောင် ပို့ဆောင်ခဲ့ကြပေသော ဗိုလ်ချုပ်အောင်ဆန်းနှင့်တကွ အဝဝသော ကူးတို့မှူးခေါင်းဆောင်ကြီးတို့၏ မဆုတ်မနစ် သောလုံ့လ မလျော့သောဝီရိယ ဆီမီးတန်ဆောင်ကဲ့သို့ ထွန်းပအပ်သော ဉာဏ်မျက်စိ ဝဇီရစိန်သွားကဲ့သို့ စူးရှသောသတ္တိတို့ကြောင့် အဟံမမ သံပကြုံးဝါး အခြားအခြား လွတ်လပ်သော နိုင်ငံကြီးတို့နှင့်တန်းတူ မြူတစ်ခြမ်းမျှ မလျော့မလို ထိုထိုသို့သော တန်ခိုးရှိန်ဝါ တေဇာအပေါင်းတို့နှင့် ပြည့်စုံသော အချုပ်အချာတည်းဟူသော အာဏာထူး အမြတ်ကို ငါတို့လက်ကိုင် အပိုင်ရရှိကြပြီ။

၄။ ငါတို့သည် တမျိုးဘာသာ တစိတ်တဒေသ၏ ကောင်းကျိုးချမ်းသာကို မလိုလား ကျောသား ရင်သား သူကား ငါကား ခွဲခြားခြင်းကိုအလိုမရှိ မြစ်ချောင်း သီတာ သမုဒ္ဒရာ တောင်တန်းတို့ဖြင့် ကမ္ဘာ့ဓမ္မတာ သဘာဝအပိုင်းအခြား ထင်ရှားစွာ သတ်မှတ်အပ်သော ရာဇဝင်ရှည်ဝေး ရှေးပဝေဏီမှစ၍ယခုထက်တိုင် မြန်မာနိုင်ငံသားဟု သမုတ်အပ်သူ တိုင်းရင်းသားအပေါင်းတို့ ဇာတိချက်ကြွေ နေထိုင်ရာ မြန်မာနိုင်ငံတော်တစ်ဝှမ်းကို တသွေးတသားတည်းဟူသော ကြိုးထူး၊ တစိတ်တဝမ်းတည်းဟူသော ကြိုးထူး၊ အလိုအလျေက် သဘာဝအထောက်အပံ့ဖြင့်သာလျှင် ဖြစ်ပေါ်အပ်သော စေတနာတည်းဟူသော ကြိုးထူး ဤ ကြိုးသုံးပါးဖြင့် ကမ္ဘာဆုံးတိုင် မြဲခိုင်တည်တံ့အောင် ရစ်ပတ်ဖွဲ့စည်းအပ်သော ပြည်ထောင်စုအဖြစ်ကို လက်ဆုပ် လက်ကိုင် ငါတို့အပိုင်ရလေပြီ။

၅။ ငါတို့နိုင်ငံတော်ကြီးသည် မည်သူ တဦးတယောက် တဖွဲ့တသင်း၏ အမွေအနှစ်မဟုတ်၊ မည်သူတဦးတယောက်တဖွဲ့တသင်း၏ ပုဂ္ဂလိကအပိုင် ပစ္စည်းမဟုတ်၊ မည်သူတဦးတယောက် တဖွဲ့တသင်းက ချုပ်ကိုင်အနိုင်သိမ်းယူ အကျိုးခံစားအပ်သော နိုင်ငံမဟုတ်၊ အတိတ်ကာလက၎င်း၊ ယခုမျက်မှောက်တွင်၎င်း၊ နောင်လာလတံ့သော အနာဂတ်ကာလ၌၎င်း၊ ငါတို့ပြည်ထောင်စုကြီးအတွင်း၌ မှီတင်း နေထိုင်ကြသော ကြီးငယ် ဝေးနီး ကျား/မ မခြား သစ္စာတော်ခံ နိုင်ငံသား ဟူသရွေ့ ဒို့၏အမွေအနှစ် အပိုင်ပစ္စည်း အကျိုးခံစားရာဖြစ်သည် ဟူသော လူ့ဘာသာ လူ့တရားနှင့်အညီ ကမ္ဘာဦးကာလလူတို့၏ စည်းရုံးမှု၌ လူအပေါင်းတို့၏ သဘောဆန္ဒအရ လူအဝှမ်း၏ အကျိုးကိုကောင်းစွာဆောင်ရွက်နိုင်အံ့သောပုဂ္ဂိုလ်ကို ရွေးကောက်၍ သမ္မတတင်မြှောက်ကြသော မဖောက်မပြန် မစွန်းမငြိ ပကတိသန့်ရှင်းဖြူစင်သော မူလလူ့ဝါဒနှင့် လျော်စွာစည်းကမ်းဥပဒေ သေချာထင်ရှားစွာ ပိုင်းခြားသတ်မှတ် တူညီသောတရား တူညီသောအခွင့်အရေး တူညီသောအဆင့်အတန်းအားဖြင့် ကမ္ဘာအရှည် တည်စိမ့်သောငှာ လူအပေါင်းတို့၏ဆန္ဒသာလျှင် အဓိကဖြစ်သော သမ္မတမြန်မာနိုင်ငံတော် တည်းဟူသော မြတ်သော အဖြစ်ကို လက်ဆုပ်လက်ကိုင် ငါတို့အပိုင်ရပြီ။

၆။ သိကြကုန်လော့၊ ယနေ့ မင်္ဂလာအပေါင်းနှင့်ပြည့်စုံသော ဤအချိန်မှစ၍ ငါတို့၏ မူလအပိုင်ဖြစ်သော လုံးဝလွတ်လပ်ရေးကို ငါတို့ပြန်၍ယူပြီ။ တိုင်းရင်းသား အပေါင်းတို့ သွေးစည်းညီညွတ်လျက် အခွင့်အရေးအဆင့်အတန်း တူညီသည့် ပြည်ထောင်စု သမ္မတနိုင်ငံတော်ကြီးကို တည်ထောင်ပြီ။ ငါတို့လွတ်လပ်ရေးနှင့် ငါတို့နိုင်ငံတော်ကြီး၏ သစ္စာကို ကမ္ဘာဆုံးတိုင် မယိမ်းမယိုင် တည်မည်၊ ငါတို့သည် လွတ်လပ်သောနိုင်ငံဖြစ်သည်နှင့်အညီ ကမ္ဘာ့လွတ်လပ်သောနိုင်ငံအပေါင်းတို့ တရားသဖြင့် ကျင့်ဆောင်အပ် သော ကျင့်ဝတ်ကို စောင့်ရှောက်ကျင့်ဆောင်မည်၊ ငါတို့၏လွတ်လပ်ရေးကို ငါတို့ချစ်မြတ်နိုးသည်နှင့်အညီ တစ်ပါးသူတို့၏ လွတ်လပ်ရေးကိုလည်း ငါတို့လေးစားစောင့်စည်းမည်။ ငါတို့သည် ငြိမ်းချမ်းရေးကို အလိုရှိသည်နှင့်အညီ ငါတို့ကဲ့သို့ လိုလားသူများနှင့် အတူလက်တွဲ၍ ကမ္ဘာ့ငြိမ်းချမ်းရေးကို ကာကွယ်စောင့်ရှောက်မည်။
