US POLICY ON MYANMAR: A DISPLAY OF IGNORANCE, DELUSION, AND MORAL BANKRUPTCY

When President Donald Trump’s administration announced the termination of TPS for Myanmar nationals, many observers were disappointed — but not surprised. Ending TPS is the prerogative of any US government. They may tighten or loosen their borders as they wish.

But what is shocking — and frankly embarrassing — is the level of ignorance, irresponsibility, and detachment from reality displayed in Washington’s accompanying political statements about Myanmar.

1. Calling Myanmar’s Military-Controlled Election “Free and Fair”

To describe the manipulated, military-designed electoral process as free and fair is nothing short of infantile intelligence. It exposes a US government that either does not understand Myanmar’s political structure or deliberately chooses to whitewash authoritarianism when convenient.

2. Praising a “Successful Ceasefire” That Never Existed

Any suggestion that the ceasefire was “successful” demonstrates delusion and insanity. Ceasefire agreements in Myanmar exist on paper only, regularly violated by the military and opportunistically abused by armed groups.
For the US to declare success in such chaos is a testament to how far removed Washington is from the lived realities of Myanmar’s people.

3. Claiming Local Governance Has “Improved”

This is perhaps the most out-of-touch statement of all. Local governance in Myanmar has collapsed — replaced by lawlessness, militarisation, arbitrary taxation, extortion, and humanitarian blockades.
If this is what the US considers “improvement”, then American intelligence assessments are in a state of freefall.

THE SYMBOLISM OF AN UNINFORMED ADMINISTRATION

No wonder the incompetence trickles down.
In August 2024, Trump’s Defense Secretary nominee Pete Hegseth was unable to name a single ASEAN country during his confirmation hearing.
This is not merely embarrassing — it is dangerous. It shows that Southeast Asia, including Myanmar, does not even register on the strategic radar of decision-makers responsible for global security

A TRACK RECORD OF US BLUNDERS ON MYANMAR

The US frequently lectures the world on democracy and human rights.
But on Myanmar, its actions reveal hypocrisy, selective morality, and geopolitical cowardice.

1. Failure to Support Myanmar’s Opposition

Unlike Israel or Ukraine, where US support is strong and immediate, Myanmar’s democratic forces receive little more than speeches and symbolic condemnations.
No real pressure, no effective assistance, and no meaningful strategy.

2. Discriminatory Refugee Policies

The contrast in treatment between:

  • White, Christian European Ukrainian refugees, and
  • Asian refugees from Myanmar
    is glaring.
Even Myanmar’s Christian and ethnic minority refugees find the doors shut — proving that Western humanitarianism is often shaped by racial and religious bias, both in the US and the EU.

3. Cutting Humanitarian Funds at Thai and Bangladesh Borders

The suspension of cross-border humanitarian funding has directly harmed:

  • displaced Rohingya,
  • civilians fleeing the war,
  • and ethnic populations trapped without food or medical aid.

This is not strategic policy.
It is abandonment.

4. The Blanket Ban on Americans Supporting ICC Investigations

To protect:

  • US politicians,
  • US soldiers, and
  • Israel
from potential scrutiny over international crimes, Washington imposed a sweeping ban on Americans assisting the ICC.

As a result:

  • NGOs,
  • activists, and
  • organisations like Fortify Rights
were intimidated, discouraged, or obstructed from submitting evidence on:
  • the Rohingya Genocide,
  • atrocities by the Myanmar military,
  • and recent mass abuses by AA.

The message is clear:
American self-preservation overrides justice for Myanmar’s victims.

CONCLUSION

The US claims to champion democracy and human rights.
But its policies on Myanmar reveal a government blinded by racial bias, geopolitical self-interest, and a shocking lack of intelligence about the region.

Trump’s Myanmar policy is not just incompetent —
it is a betrayal of the oppressed, a gift to dictators, and a stain on America’s global credibility.

If Washington wishes to lead, it must first learn to understand.
If it wishes to defend justice, it must practice it — not only when the victims are white, Christian, or politically convenient.

The chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee does not agree with the termination of the TPS for Myanmar Nationals in the US.
