Myanmar today is a country where the social and moral foundations have been shattered. Ordinary decent youths — the ones who work hard to support their parents — are forcibly dragged off into military conscription, while neighborhood gangs, petty criminals, alcoholists, and extortionists roam freely and even gain recognition as “People’s Militias.”

Simply opening a VPN or Telegram brings a flood of pornographic advertisements. Even official mobile operators promote dubious lottery schemes that imitate illegal gambling — openly and shamelessly.

While ordinary working-class families struggle to earn 5,000 or 6,000 kyats a day by selling small bundles of vegetables under the hot sun, local thugs, police, and soldiers collect tens of thousands of kyats daily at checkpoints without effort.

Human traffickers, illegal timber syndicates, gambling operators, drug distributors, and pornography networks — all these groups operate under the protection of powerful partners. Many of their leaders have received religious titles, donations, and public recognition. The post alleges that:

• Some syndicate heads maintain partnerships with the military and got high awards (သီရိပျံချီဘွဲ့)
• Wealthy humantrafficers and fuel tycoons operate above the law and got high awards (သီရိပျံချီဘွဲ့)
• Certain monks who openly support senior generals enjoy prestige despite violating monastic discipline and got high awards (သီရိပျံချီဘွဲ့)

This is a country where public preaching halls claim that the coup was necessary to “protect Buddhism,” while gambling dens, pornography rings, and criminal gangs mushroom everywhere. Robberies, violence, and extortion become daily news. Greed, anger, and ignorance spread unchecked, and moral values collapse.

Honest people find it harder to survive. Many citizens must struggle all day just to earn 10,000 kyats for basic needs, while countless youths flee the country — crossing borders like desperate animals accross the borders— in search of safety and dignity.

Meanwhile, social media celebrates gang culture. TikTok “idols,” gang members, and provocative dancers become celebrities. Fights and gang gatherings happen openly behind schools, shaping the next generation.

Some monks now treat money like ordinary paper and accept huge stacks of cash. Driving luxury cars, wearing designer robes in bright saffron colours, and enjoying modern comforts have become common among certain monks who no longer follow Vinaya discipline.

The writer expresses gratitude to the late Mahasi Sayadaw and Mogok Sayadaw, saying that because of the spiritual momentum they left behind, Buddhism in Myanmar has not completely disappeared — but may not survive another 20 years if the current decline continues.
