A powerful and united front—from the UN to our own ASEAN neighbors, including the UK and Australia—is rejecting the military junta’s fake election. This is a moment of great encouragement. Here’s the latest on who is standing with us and what we must do next.

What You Need to Know: A United Global, Regional & Commonwealth Front

Key world powers and organizations have publicly denounced the junta’s planned election. This represents a clear rejection of the military’s legitimacy across all diplomatic fronts.

• ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations):

o ASEAN has officially stated that holding an election is “not a priority” and that the focus must be on ending the violence.

o Regional parliamentarians and over 300 civil society groups have warned that this sham election is a “trap” designed to entrench military rule and that it violates the spirit of the Five-Point Consensus.

• United Kingdom:

o The UK has made clear that elections conducted under the military regime’s conditions would not be democratic.

o British officials warned the election “risks escalating unrest and violence”. The UK continues to provide aid and maintain sanctions.

• Australia:

o Australia has called the junta’s planned elections illegitimate, stating they will not lead to a representative outcome.

o In joint statements, Australia warned the current plan “risks further violence and instability”.

• The United Nations (UN):

o UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk declared the election cannot be “free or fair” and will only “fuel more violence,” noting the exclusion of Rohingya and opposition parties.

o The office of UN Secretary-General António Guterres confirmed the only real solution is a “return to democracy”.

• The United States:

o A U.S. Special Envoy stated unequivocally: “We reject these elections under current conditions” at the UN.

• New Zealand Parliamentarians:

o After meeting with over 30 of our pro-democracy groups on the Thai-Myanmar border, three NZ MPs are now pushing their government to formally “reject the sham election”.

• Japan:

o The Japanese government expressed “serious concern” that the election will worsen the conflict.

Our Next Steps: Turning Global Consensus into Concrete Action

The junta’s draconian laws mean we must act smartly and safely. Our strength is in strategic, unified action, not in risky referendums, surveys, and petitions that could endanger families back home. New laws criminalize any criticism of the election and punish the use of VPNs, making traditional protest methods extremely dangerous.

• Amplify These Messages:

o Share the powerful statements from ASEAN, the UN, UK, Australia, and other world leaders on social media. Use simple graphics and short videos. Let’s ensure everyone, everywhere, knows the world—including our Commonwealth partners—stands with us.

o This is about sharing public information to educate the world and build pressure.

• Engage with Lawmakers in Your New Home Countries:

o The NZ MPs’ mission is a model to follow. Diaspora groups should connect with their local representatives, especially in Commonwealth countries where Myanmar connections run deep.

o Share your stories. Ask them to form “Friends of Myanmar” groups in their parliaments to push for stronger, coordinated action.

• Become the Voice in the Media:

o Write articles and op-eds for local and international news. Explain why this election is a fraud and what the world can do to help.

o Offer your insights to journalists. Your personal experiences are more powerful than any junta propaganda.

• Push for a Unified International Policy:

o We must ask all democratic nations to take these concrete steps together:

i. Formally refuse to recognize the election results.

ii. Increase targeted sanctions on the junta’s sources of money and weapons.
